I’ve been using ChatGPT on my iPhone and iPad, and it’s fantastic. I get all the information I need in seconds. I haven’t used the desktop version as much since it’s online, but I’m impressed with the mobile experience. There are no ads to interrupt, making it a smooth and efficient tool. However, I wonder how long this will last before monetization comes into play. If advertisers notice reduced traffic due to ChatGPT, we might see some changes. So, I suggest enjoying this ad-free experience while it lasts.
I installed the app on my 2020 iMac. Upon launch, it noted "You have six free questions left". After which it is apparently $15 a month! No thanks.

As long as ChatGPT and their ilk are profit-driven companies, they are part of this capitalist parasites. They are taking public (and privately held) knowledge and profiting from it without any compensation. It doesn't matter if they give a slice of the pie away or not.

I don't care what happened for thousands of years. Non-profit 501.c3 or nothing.[/QUOTE]

I‘m not a big fan. It doesn’t have any benefit compared to the browser app?
I use the app on my iPad, mostly when I am in the flights or need to review offline. You have all the history on the device if needed. I wouldn’t put it on my iPhone though.

I downloaded it outside of the AppStore. Does this mean my Mac is imminently going to be taken over by horrendous malware and other scary things that I don't understand? Will report back in a few days!

Can anyone tell me which is the 'official' Mac app (there are dozens on the App Store), and what the security provisions are? I assume they are improved from the web version.
Don't use the AppStore. It's overrated. You can download direct from ChatGPT (openAI)

I have reservations about using these tools that are being created by stealing from anywhere and everywhere to create the end results

Louie really said it best in this short essay

The “public” in “public web” means free to access; it does not mean it's free to use.
Not only stealing … the article under the link below reminded me today how unreliable ChatGPT and cohorts as sources of knowledge. I saw a post in this thread that called the tool fantastic … oh my.

OpenAI prudently restricted it to Macs sold from Nov 2020-onward (3.5yo Macs) that are running 2023 macOS 14-onward.

Fun macOS worldwide usage stats
  • <4.75% are older than 2019 macOS Catalina
  • >95.25% are 2019 macOS Catalina or newer
What I want to see are the worldwide usage stats of Apple Silicon vs Intel Macs

They still have to maintain two code bases. ARM and Intel app. I doubt open AI or any one is going to start developing for Intel Macs.
If they do it right, then it'd be a single code base that simply gets compiled to both targets (a universal app). I agree with antnythr that it's odd to build such a simple app as Arm-only.

INTEL USERS SCREWED. Only for M chips.
Macs typically get replaced every 4 years.

macOS support typically ends ~10 years.

2020 Intel Macs will likely receive final macOS security patch by 2027.

Good move for OpenAI to limit support to Apple Silicon Macs that are no more than 3.5yo.

Saves them on support cost.

Thanks. But, no thanks.

I don't own a mac anymore (thanks to temporal dithering or whatever is causing headaches for some of us) and even if I did, I wouldn't want to send any data to OpenAI.
Huh? The Mac is fine. What issues are you having that cause you a headache?
