And you base this on?

Hackintoshes have been around for awhile now for people who want to use Apple software without the exorbitant prices associated with Apple hardware.

It's really not that hard to pay attention to what updates are compatible or not.

Especially since intel uses related families of chipsets now. Very much like Apple did with the U-series of chipsets.

Things were so much better in the Mac community before the cult of Jobs took over.

No it wasn't, the Mac was dead before Jobs came back, and NEXT had some of the best frameworks available for any platform at the time, so they were an ideal fit.

Apple is required to sue them to defend the "Mac" trademark. There is no choice. These people were fools to use "Mac" in their product name and obviously don't know enough about business to keep the doors open.

Sad but true, I didn't think of that, Apple will have to sue.

Hey, as a server in a cupboard, if it ran OS X Server I would be too bothered by its looks. ;)

I don't see why it wouldn't...

Things were so much better in the Mac community before the cult of Jobs took over.

Before Jobs took over Apple was losing a quarter of a billion dollars per quarter and only had 2 billion in reserve.

CORRECTION: Half a billion per quarter with a quickly dwindling 2 billion in reserve.

If they don't sell it with Leopard, I don't see how Apple can block it.

its a great way to go actually, selling machine w/o OS, There is nothing illegal here, just a flock of users who breaks EULA.....lol

on the other hand, I doubt this will be a earth crashing threat to apple....

What apple as a company got with SJ is quite different from what mac user community got with SJ.

Apple as a company, got $$$, got rich
Apple users, got cult, got twisted facts. And some of them actually believe those false info.
Apple users also got OSX, which is obviously a great improvement. How much does OSX have anything to do with SJ? IDK, someone tell me the story?

Great news

This is great & I hope the openmac is a success.

We would not be having this discussion if Apple did not rip people off with their stupid configurations..

Mac Mini = (laptop parts in a desktop, user need a paint scraper to open up, overpriced for what you get = dumb idea)

imac = (cheap LCD & you have to buy new LCD every time you replace)

And, you don't even have to pay an extra 150%. I think at worst it would be an extra 50%.

It kind of depends of what you're looking for. When it comes down to like hard ware in a like role, what Apple offers isn't that much more expensive. The problem comes from the many mismatches based on Apple's hardware choices. If you have to use a professional workstation as a desktop, its going to be much more expensive. If you have to get a premium thin and light, its also going to be much more expensive than a normal 15 or 17 inch laptop.

The Mac Mini is a prime example of where Jobs allowed Ive to go wild and a make a machine that is next to worthless. They were a bad deal when announced and a completely inadequate for any uses above email now.

The Mac mini is the desktop version of the MacBook. No more, no less (except when the update lags behind the MacBook, as it is right now).

Why do people keep calling the Mac mini "worthless" yet they don't say anything bad about the MacBook?

My whole company runs on a Mac mini. That's everything from product design, invoices, email, etc. Not everyone needs the power of a Mac Pro or wants a built-in display like the iMac. And the low-end Mac mini is half the price of the low-end iMac, meaning that I can upgrade my computer twice for the price of a single iMac.

If the Mac mini is "next to worthless" in your opinion, then don't buy it. There's a lot of people out there who either can't afford anything else (as far as Macs go) or don't want a laptop, an all-in-one or a gigantic Mac Pro. And an Xserve under my desk would just look silly. ;)

I love my MB and MBP, my Nano, my Classic, my Iphone, Iwork and all the other "i"'s in my life. But the Apple premium is hard to swallow at times... In the end... Totally worth it.

But things like a 30 inch Cinema display for $1500! C'mon now! Dell has a BETTER monitor out for cheaper.

Ok - Really - I love you Steve. Please don't be mad. I love you Steve. I'm sorry for saying something negative about Apple. I love you Steve.

Only difference from getting a dell or a Cinema display, is the fact that your paying for a definite S-IPS display. Dell on the other hand.....your in the panel lottery:

What about the ModBook? That's a 3rd party Mac tablet and they didn't get sued into oblivion.

If they made a deal with Apple, it could work out. Maybe Apple will see it like the ModBook- a product they don't feel is lucrative enough to produce, but an opportunity to make a few bucks of a smaller company willing to risk it.

My tuppence;

1) that is an über fugly box. I wouldn't buy it regardless of the innards. I just couldn't bring myself to look at it. It's about as aesthetically pleasing as a public execution.
2) speculation is rife that the Mini is about to be bumped to the GMA965 chipset with X3100 graphics in line with the Macbooks, rendering this machine obsolete by comparison as soon as the bump occurs. They would have done much better to base the box on the rumoured imminent specs rather than the incumbent specs.
3) it's fugly.
4) regardless of the actual legality or illegality of preinstalling Leopard on the unit, I only hope this forces - or, more likely, coerces - Apple's hand to bring out the much desired xMac so that the job is done properly and fully supported hardware is used, not some ropey "let's try and make a fast buck out of a hacking community's efforts" patch job.
5) did I mention it's fugly?

you do know the x3100 chipset sucks balls dont you.

Apple users, got cult,

They were a lot more of a cult beforehand.

got twisted facts. And some of them actually believe those false info.

True.
How much does OSX have anything to do with SJ? IDK, someone tell me the story?

A lot, it is based on NEXTSTEP which was created by NEXT computing which Jobs founded after leaving Apple the first time, NEXT created Cocoa too.

This article is pretty evenly matched in the positive to negative ratings. The difference between this situation and another PC manufacturer coming out and marketing its wares as "Windows compatible" or "Windows pre-installed" is that Microsoft would love to sell more OS's and would probably find a way to allow it. I personally will not end up buying one.

Thats very different.

I dont, I hope this tanks big style.

Same here. I do hope that there becomes an option to run Mac OS X on a PC for those niche models... (Tough Books, real ultra-portables, etc.) but this isn't what I or many were looking for. This is not only ugly, but will most likely cause the user a lot of problems when it comes to running Apple and 3rd party software. The fact that updating the OS would cause problems and you have to check their website destroys the main reason for wanting a Mac.

If you have to go through all of that just to keep the machine running and have uncertainty in running software you might as well not even bother with it.

I can't believe anyone would have the balls to try and cash in on Apple like this. This is a total slap in the face to the Mac community. I'm sure there are some wannabes that would love a $400 Mac. I say to them: Go buy a Mini! As for the rest of us, the Apple faithful, we should be up in arms at this. We spent our hard earned cash to buy the real deal. We should not support this company's attempt at cashing in on Leopard, the Mac, or Apple.

To be honest i'm not entirely sure whether apple will have any power to stop this machine, especially is the makers do not explicitly market and advertise it as an OS X capable machine.

How can offering to install Leopard and iLife not be construed as advertising an OS X capable machine?

$2,000????????

I like how the ad says why spend $2000 on a Mac, when they are selling a Mac Mini, which is $600.

That's WAY different. They are just taking MacBooks and modifying the screen and case to make it a tablet. Then putting some tablet software on it.

This tower is taking various parts and pieces and making a box that can run Leopard. It's like selling a hackintosh.

And remember the ModBook is quite a price jump from the Mac Book.

A lot, it is based on NEXTSTEP which was created by NEXT computing which Jobs founded after leaving Apple the first time, NEXT created Cocoa too.

well, I guess I have to admit OSX is a great thing that happens to mac users. :) I would give SJ credit for his foresight through that time.

The ModBook is made from an Apple MacBook, meaning Apple sells one MacBook for each ModBook.

This OpenMac is made from regular PC parts, meaning Apple loses a sale for every OpenMac sold.

Not to mention the increased tech support and public opinion problems this would create (i.e. "But I bought Leopard legally!", "OS X is crap, it keeps crashing"*, etc).

* = emulated EFI, Apple updates untested on OpenMac, etc. I'm not talking about "Apple parts" vs "PC parts", which is just silly. ;)

edit: Digital Skunk beat me to it.
