I don’t even want to imagine what kind of sites those are.
Safari doesn't play nice with various airlines if you want to click and choose a seat. The seat config just doesn't render properly. Same for seat selection and some concert venues etc.

Has Safari support improved over the years? Yes. But Chrome is the standard, so sometimes Chrome just has to be used if you want to get things done.

WebKit and other KHTML derived engines are the standard. If your airlines site doesn’t work properly with the global standard then tell them to hire proper web devs.

Chrome’s Blink engine is also a fork of KHTML.

No he can’t. There are always miscreants spreading lies on the internet. They take advantage of the David vs Goliath narrative even when their version of David is a crappy company or crappy app or crappy person.

It is quite easy to monitor what packets are leaving your machine and getting a good idea if they are going 'home' or to the website you are accessing. You can even direct these to 127.0.0.1 if you want to shut it down. That only covers direct metric gathering however, such as calls to Mixpanel. Regardless, don't rely on any one voice, investigate for yourself and make the best judgement you can on which company you want to compromise with.

Puleeeze. Abdul and Jason on your ISP’s IT department know every site you visit. Apple and Google don’t have your browsing history (if it isn’t synced).

Apple is part of a group working on a new encrypted HTTP standard that will hide this traffic from your ISP.

Chrome's engine is indeed just a fork of an old version. However, like with IE6 we now have developers specifically building for Google Chrome or features perceived only to exist in it. WebRTC comes to mind as a more recent example. Or VP9 which only very recently made it's way to Safari even though it was well used on sites outside of Youtube on the assumption everyone uses Chrome.

Whenever we have a browser eating up the lions share we end up with websites built just for it.

Note I mentioned American browsers, not specifically Apple. My point still stands that people will happily give away their data to known bad entities in the USA but will balk when it comes to a European browser just because their parent company is a Chinese video game developer.

I'll also remind you that Opera have DNS over HTTPS already.

I would be less inclined to think Safari is tracking as like Opera it isn't in the companies DNA. Google Chrome for sure and thats the biggest browser. Picking out one golden example doesn't break the argument that people in their droves are happily downloading known spyware/data collection riddled browsers from US companies. I'll trust a European browser any day.
So at the end of the day you still choose Opera over Safari, the browser that sends precious data back to home base (China)? And no Opera is not a “European browser” just as you wouldn’t call Honda or Toyota an American company just because their vehicles are fully or partly made here in the US.

Has anyone tried the North Korean browser?

Opera is headquartered, developed, and distributed from Europe. The developers are all here and it originated here. And no, Opera doesn't call home, but I will continue to use Safari as my main browser.

I am however getting rather fed up of this perceived threat that a billion people are out to get you. Especially when it is coming from the country that was already found out to be doing mass surveillance on its own population and allies. Right now we only have the guilty party assuming that China is also guilty of spying on regular citizens and that anything with any kind of funding from China must be a front for the Chinese Government... why on earth would Chinese companies after earning billions, want to diversity and buy up smaller companies outside their borders like everyone else?

I just don’t get why any regular Mac owner would shop for a different browser. If you’re a dev I understand you need to check compatibility, otherwise, really, it’s that important to you?
I see it as more of a case of not putting all your eggs in one basket. I use Firefox as my primary browser. That's been the way since Microsoft started playing dirty with Mozilla because of IE. I use Safari for a defined set of sites. I also use Brave for the more risque sites that I might visit.
If a vulnerability is found in one browser then that is as far as it gets. I do development work but nothing related to web pages.

Do you think people may lack enthusiasm for Chinese products because of the hell of covid?

The standard is to work correctly in Chrome as that's the global default for users. The sad truth, whether we like it or not.

I would hope people aren't so racist. Disease starts up across the world and quickly spreads, Covid 19 is just the latest. And regardless, this isn't a Chinese product. The parent company is in China and they make video games. Would you blame Blizzard and Blizzard employee's for the NSA's existence or if Covid 2023 develops in the USA?

I'll also note it is rather immoral to try to weaponise the 6000 odd people that died to Covid 19 in this county.

I would advise anyone to cut off any links with a communist regime at the earliest opportunity.

True story. I know a journalist who refuses to put any photos of himself online. Years ago when this NK browser came out he decided to review it for fun.

A week later someone pretending to be a tourist was blatantly and openly taking photos of him when he came out of his house. He took a photo of the tourist in return and the guy ran off.

If you can find one, let me know. In the meantime May canny come quick enough and we can cut ties with an imperialist regime with delusions of grandeur, hopefully without needing to resort to war.

Gosh true face revealed.

China was an imperialist nation long before the US existed. It still has these Mandate from Heaven beliefs infused with its form dictator controlled mercantilism.

All wealthy states are mercantist. The difference is how accountable the people in power are. Not just the people in government.

What is the US to do with my comment you are quoting here? Indeed what is China in relation to the comment you quoted?

Nice area - castles, golf courses, nice ports etc. Anyway, back to Opera… :D
There has been barely any discussion about the Opera browser. Just how the video game company that owns it is somehow evil. I can’t imagine how hard it was to build up a billion dollar company in that country then to diversify and suddenly the politics of your country’s government puts people off the company you bought. I guess it is nice to blame Activision for all the woes people have with Blizzard.
