By open source i meant allowing any app anyone wants on the iphone. That clearly opens the door for crappily made apps that crash constantly.

where did I equate crashing with open source?

I equate badly written apps with crashing. (and thats not saying opera was made crappily)

Are you kidding? Safari crashes more often than I can count now. I would love some other browsers on the iPhone so I could see if someone else can get it right. Apple sure hasn't.

I do agree with most of you in that it would be good to have Opera Mini on the iPhone (now that I know it can't run Flash). I can't see how Apple will be hurt.

But honestly... this thread is a cesspool of some of the most uninformed, unintelligent comments I've seen in a long while - from all directions. Anticompetitive? Illegal? Opera is crap now? Apple is afraid? Safari always crashes? As if Flash being a CPU hog is the main reason why it should stay off the iPhone? Apple has to put in their store whatever developers demand - or else?

Save Room For Apps Providing Other Functions

There is limited storage on the iPhone. Why would someone want to have multiple apps doing the same thing? Use Safari, and leave room for other apps, pics, music....

Imo duplication of functionality. I don't like Opera, and sincerely don't think it could be better then Apple's offering atm.

About anti-competitive, why as a company would you do that. I don't see a reason for it to destroy your own offering. If they really want to be so competitive and open they should go to Android imo.

It's only anti-competative when Microsoft do it, right?

You are kidding, right?

Opera Mini is 150K. That's it.

And anyway, shouldn't this be MY choice? Who are YOU to tell me what I should fill up my phone with?

Safari doesn't compress data, so if the connection is slow, it is extremely slow compared to Opera Mini.

Whoa!!! I wasn't telling YOU anything!!! Just asking. I suppose it would be nice to see Opera vs Safari benchmark, but it doesn't seem likely anytime soon.

If you have suggestions on how to improve Safari's performance, I think that you should send them to Apple. Note - this is only my opinion. I'm not telling you do do anything.

It would be comparing apples and oranges. They are completely different types of browsers.

This is not about engine performance. It's about the fact that Opera Mini receives pre-processed pages, compressed up to 90% (mostly around 80% I think), so it transfers a lot faster to your phone. And that is particularly important if you are in an area with a sucky network.

No Opera No Flash

Has anyone thought that the reason Apple does not want an outside browser on its phone is because it could offer flash support. if the iphone suports flash that could open up a the ability to watch TV shows on deman anywhere. HULU?
ATT loves the idea also because that would increase the amount of data flowing out of its servers. So without enabling flash apple is able to still sell lots of great shows on iTunes. If they would allow Opera it would no doubt have flash support. That is one thing Apple does not want.

This kind of stuff will continue until Google's Andriod becomes wide spread. Apple has changed policy in the past due to direct competition. One example is the 30 day free download evaluation of Aperture. What other Apple pro apps can you download and try for free? Which other Apple pro apps have a direct competitor that offers a free 30 day trial? In a few years Apple will have to compete with Google's app store and then Apple will change the policy.

all of their pro apps have a direct competitor in adobe. All of adobes have a free trial.

I just want a browser that doesn't crash.
Is that too much to ask for?
Safari is TERRIBLE.
When will Apple finally realize this?
iPhone Safari is the most crash prone app I have ever had the displeasure of using.

Mine doesn't crash. Maybe the odd crash when a site has bad code or calls on a resource hog and doesn't have enough memory available. But that is a very seldom occurrence.

It's an unlimited data plan and that's why ATT DOESNT like the idea.

I would like the choice, flash would kill my battery though, so I'd like the option to turn it off.

Safari crashes on me fairly regularly, I actually think it got worse with 2.2

how lame.

Same here.

Dunno about opera mini, but opera standard is a great, great browser and in some respects better than my beloved firefox.

and Opera's PR stunts continues....

How's that desktop version coming along?

Oh that's right, no one uses it, and web devs sure as heck don't even think about it.

No wonder.

That's a bunch of crap, sure enough the majority that use the truely awful ie (that saves in the foreground, and takes a minute to open a tab, and won't use ctl s to save because according to the developers that would mean save it on the remote server (what a bunch of morons....), see their blog), that vast majority are what should dominate opinion making right? So a small % of people use their browser, which doesn't have a big community (firefox), m$ or apple behind it, but it's still great, so what?

Thats what im saying ATT loves that Apple wont allow Flash. People would be watching TV and what not quite a bit more. ATT doesnt want people to actually recieve unlimited data.

Did you say the same thing about Microsoft and IE???

Imo duplication of functionality. I don't like Opera, and sincerely don't think it could be better then Apple's offering atm.

Seriously?? Safari constantly crashes on my iphone, every 5 minutes, and I haven't changed my iphone in any way

Has anyone else noticed there's already another web browser on the iPhone? ;)

(It's a secondary feature of another app - which might explain how it slipped by Apple).

Apple are acting like spoiled children.

How where these developed. The SDK. The SDK clearly states that you cant have access to certain things, that to make a browser, you would clearly need.

Ok.... I'm all for defending apple but when it comes to the SDK and what apps they are allowing they are acting like spoiled children. Why are you so focused on the letter of the law? Really, are you that blind that you can't see that this is BAD for consumers (and ultimately for apple.)? Apple is wrong here. Sure, they can make up the rules but it doesn't change the fact that there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR OPERA TO BE REJECTED. They are just big ****ing control freaks and can't handle the competition. I love my iPhone but this kind of thing will make me switch to a different phone when my contract is up. Sometimes apple makes me so mad. They have some great ideas and products but inexplicably cripple them (copy and paste? WTF).

I feel like my feelings about apple are changing and if they continue on this trajectory I'll be leaving them entirely soon. It's all a matter of which choices you want to make and which ones you want apple to make for you. Which browser I use is definitely a choice that I want to make for myself. It really pisses me off that apple isn't letting me. BTW I probably would choose to stick with safari so I'm not just pissed because I want Opera.... I don't. It's a matter of principle. Apple is acting sort of like the US government of companies, they are taking away a lot of our freedoms because they say we will live better, safer lives if we just do what they say... NOT COOL:mad:

This is yet another example of why a closed platform is a bad thing for a general purpose device.

Yup, wake up Apple; you're being stupid.
Safari on the ipod touch is awful; it crashes about three times a day.
And I'm not allowed to scrobble tracks to last.fm from my ipod either.
And if I see an interesting podcast on my ipod I can't listen to it directly but have to go and turn on my computer and download it to that and then sync it across to my ipod. What?!
And there's so many bugs in the OS and other Apple apps it's ridiculous. It feels like a beta product over a year after release.
Stop being selfish Apple; let other developers provide alternatives for the things you clearly are unwilling to provide the resources to fix. (I would have written "clearly don't have the resources to fix, but there are several billion dollars sitting in the bank...)
Stop ruining the user experience of what should be a really good hand held computer.

my experience with Safari on the iPhone is that it sucks and constantly crashes. Very unstable.

so this is a very sad day indeed, Opera mini is not allowed.
very sad.

Exactly. It wouldn't be such a big deal if Safari on the iPhone didn't suck.
Exactly my sentiments as well. Safari on the iPhone/iPod touch is one of the worst browsers I've used in years. I would love an alternative.

That and the fact that if Apple keeps this up they are totally going to get slapped with an antitrust lawsuit. This is like Microsoft saying that no one can make a competitor to Internet Explorer for Windows. Really bad move on Apple's part.

So you are saying I can make a product available for use that does not tell me when I open it and use it that it watches what I do and I have to go find that one out by searching marketing materials and websites that provide this information? Why can't they disclose it up front - when I install the browser? Would you accept if Firefox came bundled with a configuration that accesses the Internet over a proxy some where without telling you about it upfront? I would not.

Malicious employee at the bank - have you ever worked at an IT department of a bank recently in the US? I have - and believe me, there is a lot of accountability there (Read up on SOX.) - few, known employees have access to the database where my bank account details are stored and the bank typically ensures that if there was fraud at there end they will refund any money stolen from your account as a result of identity theft, provided I have not been negligent.

Whoa - and I trust my bank with my money already - so I can trust them with few other things. Opera Employee - I have no reason to trust that person - it would be absurd if you were required to trust random people by no relation.

Do you even understand the privacy implications of this? Your post made Zero sense.

Err... you do realise that O2 already use such a proxy with Mobile Safari traffic on all UK iPhones right (and indeed, I suspect it's the cause of all kinds of regular network problems)? And there's no way to turn it off.
