As an option, sure. Just let me decide. I don't like a whole wide sidebar always taking up that space. But when there are dozens of open tabs, horizontal tabs become impossible to navigate.

I use it but had to go back to Sequoia bc since macOS 26 and 27 the side bar is completely not working in full screen mode, for some stupid reason they decided to remove the shortcuts on the bottom for bookmarks etc. so you could quickly check your bookmarks and ope tabs again, when you are in full screen and have always show tab turned off, it messes up top part of the sidebar, and last one gripe, they did implement some big ass icons for all the bookmaker which you can't hide or change and there is some stupid "last added" part with some huge preview. Overall sidebar in Sequoia is amazingly useful for web browsing where if you turn on to hide top bar, and open side bar instead, the websites take the whole width of the screen which is very comfy. But again, it is all messed up with macOS 26 27 and on top of that I think they are trying to kill the full screen apps as a whole, so they don't care for now if it is messed up or not (so for example when you are not in full screen the safari bar changes color according to website color, but not in full screen etc.)

I've tried a bunch of browsers, but Safari's compact tabs are unbeatable in my opinion. I'm glad they brought back compact tabs.

Tab groups isn't a dedicated vertical tab mode, but it shows all your tabs vertically and stays on the side even when you quit and open Safari again. So this is pretty much the same thing.

Horizontal tabs are wildly superior when you're using a setup like was popular when they were introduced. A 4:3 monitor and maybe ten tabs open.

Vertical tabs are at least often superior if you're using a large widescreen monitor (like 27 plus inches) and have 50+ tabs open.

Forcing them would be a bad move, but resisting *having the option* is absurd.

It makes perfect sense to me, especially for landscape displays--there is ample horizontal space. Plus we read horizontally and mainly scroll vertically, so as many tabs can be added as desired and its size will be consistent for both clicking on and reading the words (if desired--I'm sure there could also be a slim side bar mode with just the website's logo or something). It's just a more consistent UI/UX. Vertical tabs could even work on mobile vertical displays as a slide over, if that hasn't already been done. I think vertical tabs will be the mainstream eventually.

Not correct, Safari is introducing AI powered automated topic grouping feature in the sidebar instead of true vertical tabs. No one wants AI managing their browser.

Regardless of browser, vertical tabs are a consequence of users keeping every browser tab open and never closing them. Some might have hundreds of tabs open, and no doubt have forgotten that they even had them open in the first place (and end up opening them again). This has created a cottage industry of browser extensions that claim to help manage them, but don't really solve the problem of having excessively too many tabs to begin with. These folks either never heard of browser bookmarks, or refuse to use them for whatever reason.

Safari’s interface is a hot mess. Book marks, favorites, tab groups, tab group favorites, iCloud tabs, profiles, … it’s just crazy.

Can’t believe they haven’t tweaked this in macOS 27.

Screens are wider than they are tall. like by a lot. Vertical space is much more precious.

Since you probably aren't familiar with user software, you might not know this, but all browsers offer vertical tabs. Well, all except Safari.

Safari already has a side bar with useful information on it, including saved tabs and bookmarks. I preferred the days of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" when programmers were nerds and created new things, and designers actually paid attention to design language. Now we have brogrammers and poseurs breaking consistency and changing things so they can justify a promotion. The old idea of creating something new has become rearrange something and pretend you're being creative.

I'd definitely use it. A lot websites these days are formatted for mobile anyway, so no matter how wide you make the window on a desktop or laptop screen, the webpage only shows so much from side to side anyway. Having tabs on the side gives that much more room vertically for more information to be seen.

I usually leave my bookmarks sidebar open anyway, and Apple is really close since they keep the Tab Groups in the side bar already, and you can already see and toggle between open tabs there. It's just one step away from hiding the top tab bar anyway.

Exactly this! Safari has vertical tabs already if you keep the sidebar open, Tab Groups expanded, and the top tab bar layout set to Compact... and probably not a lot of people do, because locating a tab by its favicon and the first 20-ish characters of its title isn't great. Tab Expose is a much better solution.

That would be great on ultrawide displays. I don't think it would work out too well in iPad landscape mode as the ratio is not that wide.
