Finally, optical zoom is getting somewhere on phone cameras. Bring on the arms race.
It's amazing what we are doing with small phone cameras these days. I have a XS Max and I hardly ever pull out my Nikon anymore. The only thing I need it for is zoom or wide shots.
Whose “everybody”? And is a personal definition of innovation at play here?
What's a big party pic? The only evidence I see of big parties are in the form of individual selfies. And no one looking to achieve cinema photographic landscapes is going to be using a smartphone camera. 2.39 aspect ratio has nothing to do with smartphone wide angle lenses because the current crop of them optically distort the image to squeeze more information. Kind of like shooting anamorphic without correcting for the squeeze. Maybe future smartphones will include an oversampled, anamorphic sensor and lens combo that is digitally corrected in post to produce quality wide shots but that's not here yet.Landscapes. BIG party pics. Dramatic angles. Super-wide angles are far more useful that way.
But for me - 2.39:1 cinematography aspect ratio that demands super-wide angles for the same vertical field-of-view as 16:9.
I suspect you'll see a lot more 2.39:1 videos in the future.
Quoted this:I didn’t they literally meant “everybody.” And they probably were referring to the Oppo camera as “innovation.”
Everybody's innovating while Apple only knows how to raise the price.
We seem to have people suggesting that x10 zoom in a phone camera isn't innovation.Well, yeah, because Oppo isn't their team and that's what this is all about.
Quoted this:
Got it’s the ops hyperbolic opinion, hence the comment about ones personal definition of innovation.
Also all their R&D and tech trickles down to OnePlus. We will see a 10x Zoom OnePlus for next gen I bet youThe fifth biggest smartphone company in the world.
Apple really should have added a super-wide-angle lens instead of a telephoto lens first. Super-wide-angle lenses are so much more useful than telephoto lenses.
The camera 10x optical is cool stuff, I’ll give them that. However Apple is at a different level since Jobs passed. But that’s to be expected.I mean if 10x zoom is “innovation,” that seems to be a pretty low standard. But, objectively speaking, Apple hasn’t been at the same level since Jobs passed sadly.
Jobs’ Apple had Apple as an industry pioneer.
Yeah, but what’s an Oppo?

Beggars belief
Edit: Importantly, optical zoom.
I remember just a few years ago people claiming adding optical zoom to phone would be impossible![]()
I prefer telephoto. Generally the first lens I go to. I wish the better of the two cameras were the telephoto.Apple really should have added a super-wide-angle lens instead of a telephoto lens first. Super-wide-angle lenses are so much more useful than telephoto lenses.
I thought it looked a little fishy. "10x optical zoom." Get out of here. This is absolutely not a 10x optical zoom. Actually, there is no zoom lens in this phone at all. There is a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens at a a focal length 10 times longer than the wide angle. Everything between 1x and 10x is interpolated via software.

Super wide lenses are only useful for front facing selfie cameras with 4 or more people in the frame. I cannot think of a reason for ultra wide rear facing except for taking distorted pics of small interior spaces.
Yup, their product line has been painfully embarrassing since.
You do realise last year was a S model upgrade....
All of these choices are great but I really think the smartphone camera battles are all played out. They all look good enough. For those of us that really need high quality photos, a dedicated DSLR or mirrorless is much better. Everything else is just about convenience.
True, optical zoom is overrated. To much noise.Do my eyes deceive me? Are some of ya'll actually saying that optical zoom is not useful?
Anyways, been waiting on Oppo to implement this for several years now.
