With Apple's official announcement of international availability for the iPad, Orange has announced pricing for its data service for 3G-capable iPad owners in the United Kingdom. The plans offer somewhat more flexibility in payment options than AT&T does in the United States, although Orange's monthly plans come in somewhat higher in price than AT&T's and Orange does not offer unlimited data packages.
Orange UK will offer tailored 3G data plans for iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, from 10th May, and will launch a pre-registration site for SIM's at Orange.co.uk/iPad. Pay-as-you-consume, daily, weekly and monthly data plans will be available, providing the freedom to choose a type of plan depending on usage.
Orange will offer a daily access fee with up to 200 MB of data for £2, and a weekly package priced at £7.50 with 1 GB of data. Recurring monthly plans are priced at £15 (3 GB) and £25 (10 GB), with both plans offering "unlimited" data at BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots. Orange will also offer "pay-as-you-consume" access priced at 5p/MB.

Orange is also rolling out iPad 3G service plans in France, Spain and Switzerland, with additional markets to come later this year.

wow thats cheap....

considering unlimited data on my iphone from o2 is £7.50 a month....

(i dont have an iphone contract, just the data add on to a 'normal' contract)

Works out at about 82p ($1.20 approx) per day (for the year that is) for 10gb a month - thats not too bad isnt it.

I wonder what O2 and Vodafone will come away with !!

more options

I wish we had data plan offerings similiar to the UK and Europe.

It would be nice to pay a flat fee for all devices you register with ATT.

Right now I pay:

$30 data for iphone / month

$30 for home internet / month

$15/$30 ipad data /month

Almost $100 a month for the same internet.

This sounds about par for the course ... tho let's see what O2 are going to offer ... or have they already, readers?. I currently get a LOT of unlimiited data, texts and calls on my iPhone .. which I bought outright for a measly £20 a month ... they give me this 'cos I had my iPhone with O2 for 18 months ... then when the contract ran out it was a SIM only deal and thats top value. Cant fault O2 ... did I really say that?. Anyway ... it wont take an Einstein to work out that at £25 ... aka £300 a year just to get on the move wifi is tad steep ... if O2 have any nouse.. they'll knock a good fiver off that to make it £20 then they'll pull in the punters I reckon .. cos they also have to consider many iPad owners will also be iPHone owners .. paying possibly £35 a month on their new contracts ... plus ANOTHER £25? Shurely shome mishtake?. But then again dont' ask me. I am the WORST at guessing market trends. Id buy a bulk load of cheap Cabbage Patch Dolls or Hula Hoops in the hope they'll make a comeback and flog em on eBay! :D

Pretty crap prices if you ask me. If it was unlimited that would be different (for the £25 tariff). Here's hoping O2 can do better.
5p/mb = £51/GB!

I used to work for Orange, and it comes as a surprise that they are the first to announce. Usually they like to wait and see what the other networks do first before announcing anything but still...

What irritates me about these prices are:

a) Why are they different from any other device on their network. For example if it was a phone (not including iPhone of course) it costs just £1 per day for unlimited (not restricted to 200Mb) data. Surely 100Mb is 100Mb whether you use a phone or a modem, or an iPad??? What gives.

b) As expected we (in the UK) don't get the option of managing our data usage via the Settings menu like you do in the US?? How lazy are our networks??

That being said, because personally I would not need 3G every day I do like the fact that there is a daily option just for those days / occasions when I need it.

So £7.50 for a week on the iPad is good because...

Well, I like that there's an option for a week of data use -- as long as you can opt to turn it on for a week when you need it, then turn it off again when you don't.

I picture myself using the iPad mostly on WiFi, but for the odd conference or weekend road trip or vacation, say, I could turn on a week's worth of data usage.

Not from UK, so UK posters... are these prices fair?

They're not bad. TBH they don't really differ from the standard data plans you can get with a USB dongle. A bit more flexibility would be good - 1GB for £10 like their dongle plans, for instance.

Hoping for O2 existing customer discounts... and I'd sign a 12 month deal if it brought the price down.

From the press release:

iPad users will also benefit from access to Orange iPad apps, including Orange Wednesdays, the popular 2-for-1 cinema ticket offer; Your Account, which allows users to track usage and purchase data bundles; and Orange Wi-Fi hotspot locator.

This is interesting. The Orange Wednesday requires the receipt of a Text Message, even if the code is requested through the App, so how will this be managed with no "Messages" App on the iPad?

I live in the US but those plans are terrible. Is Three UK going to have data plans for the iPad?

I know from using Three on a dongle for work (using mobile video conferencing) their 3G is far superior to the rest (saying that, probably because there's not a lot of users compared to the rest !!)

Suppose we'll just have to wait & see.

They are similar to standard price on mobile internet I have on O2 with the £2/7.5/15 combination.

I say it's ok.

O2 & Vodafone may have different plans since they haven't post anything yet.

lol, i just noticed that the prices for the day and week are the same price as daily and weekly bus tickets :D

I don't get why the data prices are higher in the UK. I Know some people from the nordic countries and spain that get unilimited data.

Can't the EU step in and do something about it? I'm in the US

5p/mb = £51/GB!

Agreed.

So if you download that latest book.. you've paid for it once.. and then you'll pay a tax on it too. Nice to know that all those chats and iAd transfers will cost you indirectly.

The problem for operators is that a user will usually be using either the iPhone or the iPad at one point in time. So you're paying twice the cost.

If you have an iPhone, why not get a iPhone Simplicity Contract for £20pm and get 600 mins, 500 texts and unlimited data?
