They day and week options are cool, even if the prices aren't great. I hope they do that in Canada too. I don't travel much, so it would be nice to be able to just pay a-la-carte for a couple days or a week when I need it, and use wi-fi the rest of the time.

Not bad prices.
I love the flexibility though. While I'm at Uni, there is no 3G signal, but when at home in Manchester, there is plenty.
So I can pay for one day access at uni when I'm out and about, week/month when I'm home.

I think o2 will come out with cheaper prices.

I think Oranges prices are steep - but maybe this is the way the other networks will go? At least it appears there will be room for all the netwroks to drop their prices if they want - I'm assuming they aren't tied to any kind of contract from Apple.

For me personally if Orange did unlimited for, say, £20 a month, I still wouldn't take it simply because any friends I have with an Orange IPhone have very poor 3G coverage, especially when they are at my place.

I've had an IPad in the UK since the launch, and I will definitely consider a 3G one too, but if all the plans are like this then I won't bother.

I agree with the comment about O2 (or anyone else who hasn't announced their prices yet) have an opportunity here if they have some nounce to clean up.
For example, O2 offer their own wi fi hotspots of (Cloud and BT Openworld) for IPhone customers. I think they should offer a package, say £10 a month, for free Wifi hotspot for the cloud and BT connection to the IPad, that would be enough for me.

If you have an iPhone, why not get a iPhone Simplicity Contract for £20pm and get 600 mins, 500 texts and unlimited data?

that sounds pretty good actually. do u have a link?

at the moment i pay about £15 and i think i get 500 texts and only about 100 minutes. but its a rolling 30 day contract. i dont like being tied down which is why im going to (providing i can get round the mini sim situation) use the same contract when i but the iphone4 pay as you go and swap it out.

I'm hoping this too.

Rogers has a Data Day Pass for non-smartphones -- $1 a day for every day that you need to use data ("mobile web", email, etc.) I hope they can come up with something similar for the iPad. Ooh, I just checked the website and it looks like they have one for smartphones as well -- $2.99 a day. Still a little pricey but maybe not bad for very occasional data use.

Not very impressive.

3 for example are doing £5/mo for an unlimited internet sim only deal. I *know* they aren't the best for coverage etc etc and apparently it's subject to a fair usage of 1GB but still...it's better than £7.50/week.

i dunno what i would be doing if bought the iPad because i currently don't get 3G on my iPhone where i live and i'm on o2. Will o2 be rolling out 3G coverage everywhere to compensate for this???

I used to work for Orange, and it comes as a surprise that they are the first to announce. Usually they like to wait and see what the other networks do first before announcing anything but still...

What irritates me about these prices are:

a) Why are they different from any other device on their network. For example if it was a phone (not including iPhone of course) it costs just £1 per day for unlimited (not restricted to 200Mb) data. Surely 100Mb is 100Mb whether you use a phone or a modem, or an iPad??? What gives.

b) As expected we (in the UK) don't get the option of managing our data usage via the Settings menu like you do in the US?? How lazy are our networks??

That being said, because personally I would not need 3G every day I do like the fact that there is a daily option just for those days / occasions when I need it.

The difference is you are more likely to consume the allowed data on the iPad, than you are on a phone.

PAYG mifi is about the same price, and with the savings on wifi only ipad, it's much more tempting :)

mifi from 3 is £15 for 3gb (which I think you have to use in a month, but their site is atrocious!)

£15 for 3GB?
That doesn't sound like a great plan to me but I've never really monitored the bandwidth I use.

Does "recurring" mean you're locked into a contract?

Currrency -- $1 USD = $1.263 euro (for now)

Not from UK, so UK posters... are these prices fair?

So in USD... $6/week, $20 per month (note data limits). Dunno if "fair" compared to existing UK service or alternatives.

http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity/iphone/1_month

The tariff is Simplicity for iPhone you get a new SIM (but keep the same phone number of course).

You can sign up for a month at a time or for 12 months, you get a better deal on the longer option. eg.

Simplicity iPhone - 1 Month - 300 minutes, Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Data & Wi-Fi - £20
Simplicity iPhone - 12 months - 300 minutes, Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Data & Wi-Fi - £15

Simplicity iPhone - 1 Month - 600 minutes, Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Data & Wi-Fi - £25
Simplicity iPhone - 12 months - 600 minutes, Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Data & Wi-Fi - £20

I have the first option above for £20.

It is worth noting that you also get visual voicemail included, which you don't get on non iPhone tariffs.

how is the stuff someone can get on an ipad different in terms of what they can get to an iphone.... data is data.

£7.50 is a month, not a week.

If your original post was meant to be sarcastic, it clearly didn't appear that way to the rest of us.

£429 for the basic model equates (today) to $629 - just for anyone who is interested.

And the US price of $499 does not include tax.

If you strip the UK VAT off the UK price to give a level playing field before the currency conversion it would be:

UK Price (inc VAT) - £429
UK Price (ex VAT) - £365.10
Converted to $ at today's rate (which has taken a hammering) - $536.41

Which means we are paying an extra $37 (£25) for the iPad compared to the US buyers.

Orange

orange has always been a rip off for data, anyone else is better.
with the iphone
o2>vodafone>>>orange

AT&T'S UNLIMITED is a joke, I bet it never goes past the 5gb limit.

3GB for 15 pounds is a much better deal.

I pay in Israel 60 shekels (around 15$) for 2GB is data on my iPhone. I am a very heavy user and still can't get past the limit.

i dunno what i would be doing if bought the iPad because i currently don't get 3G on my iPhone where i live and i'm on o2. Will o2 be rolling out 3G coverage everywhere to compensate for this???

If O2's plans include hot spots and it's around, or less than £20 a month, I would consider it. Orange 3G is terrible around here (London) so I wouldn't use them regardless.

You don't pay for the maximum that you can use, you pay for what the average user on that plan uses. The _average_ phone user who has permission to use unlimited data for the day will not come anywhere near the 200 MB limit for the iPad. Some US member posted that he or she used 150 MB per month at most on his iPhone, paid for the AT&T 250 MB plan, and used it up in four days.

That one is particularly interesting because it works with up to four devices simultaneously, creating its own little WiFi network, so you can use it with a MacBook, iPod Touch, iPad WiFi, all at the same time. I think it's £50 or so for the device.
