You've got to think the MBP 17" is absolutely feathery compared to that beast.

Please...please don't pay much heed to anyone who tells you the 17" isn't portable. Guys like you and I who have carried massive brick laptops understand what it means to not be portable. The 17" is tiny in comparison, especially being as powerful as it is. It's more than portable.
I agree that the 17 inch MBP is just fine for travelling. True road warriors might want to consider something a little smaller and lighter but for those of us who don't have to carry a laptop around all day every day the 17 inch MBP is a great machine. My 17 inch MBP, and its predecessor, a 17 inch Powerbook G4, which was the same size and weight as the MBP, have travelled all over the country with me for more than seven years. Better yet, it has been years since I regularly used a desktop.

But, not as convenient for using on your lap or anywhere / 'on the go'... It's more pleasurable I think to use a 13" for that purpose.

Which size laptop one choses has to be determined by what you do with it. If you spend 90 percent of your time "on the go" I agree that the 13 inch is a better choice than the 17 inch. But as a happy owner of 17 inch Mac laptops for the past 7 years, I must say that picking it up from the ottoman and putting it in my lap in my big room while I am sitting in my TV chair is hardly onerous. That's how I have used my Macs more than 90 percent of the time. In return for a weight and size hit that is nearly meaningless 90 percent of the time, I enjoy the benefits of a faster chip, bigger screen, and higher resolution. Ultimately, it comes down to making a personal choice, of course, and my choice was the 17 inch. In the best of all possible worlds I would have a smaller, lighter Mac for portable uses that has the power of an MBP and the form factor and light weight of the MBA. Nothing like that is currently available, so for the moment at least the 17 inch MBP is it for me.

My only regret is not having purchased anti-glare on all our laptops. We don't use the glossy "glare" screen laptops outside but they reflect every little source of light.

anti-glare is the only way to go
