It is good for someone who doesn't want to pay double the price for an iPad mini Retina. Unless you are playing hardcore games, it is still a good device.

The original iPad mini is still perfectly fine for lighter duty use and also for kids. At $199 it's a great deal for those that don't live on the bleeding edge, plus it will also be getting iOS 8 this fall as well, so it's a no brainer at that price.

do u remember when the mini was released? thought so, it's an old device

iPad's dont need to be the newest device, my iPad 2 is perfect for what I use it for, emails, web browsing, news, and creating documents. mo need for super high specs, this is a great deal for a lot of people, no need to be rude about it.

for $199 i'm going to pick this up just to use as a gps in my car and stream my sirius xm..

Just look at these prices on amazon for a gps

gps r dirt cheap these days, u can find a lot on sales below $100

This is good for maybe kids who are desperate for an iPad only. I had an original and honestly I hated the screen, I had to return it for the retina version immediately.

Also isn't this the WiFi version? How are you guys expecting to use this as a GPS? Oh and just because it gets ios 8 doesn't mean it'll run it well.

No. iPad mini is outdated and not worth it.

I have 4 grand kids the live close to me. One is 11, one is 7, 4 and 2.
The 11 yo has a windows based laptop, but the 7 and 4 yo are prime candidates for a wifi 16gb original mini. Children's games, countless educational programs are available that don't need unbridled horse power to run, and purchasing new will allow the purchase of AppleCare which is extremely important for a child of that age.
Yup, I still think it's a great deal for that segment of the market.

Wow. Spoiled kids.

I still use my iPad 2 daily, with no issues, for the same reasons you use it for. Great device.... still.

Why do you say that?

My son is 2 and has had a Nook color and a Nexus 7. Both of which are passed down from us. Tablets (especially at < $200) are perfect for young children. They easily replace and are far better then all those stupid VTech games and toys that most children inherently obtain at that age from one source or another. My son has learned so much from the games and teaching apps we have bought for him. TBH in the long run a $200 iPad is a far better value then the aforementioned VTech toys which have limited usefulness and lifespans.
