for $199 i'm going to pick this up just to use as a gps in my car and stream my sirius xm..

Just look at these prices on amazon for a gps

Hello apples! I'm an orange! ;)

Seriously though ... it may be OK for you, but the difference in cost is that the GPS has no paid service attachments or limitations for data. The iPad always will, even if it means you are tethering from a phone you are paying for ... and the GPS will work if you go into an area with poor wireless.

Whys that?

Because of the readability issues. Even though the iPad Mini has a higher PPI than the iPad 2, text look just as blurry/fuzzy/jaggy on the Mini, only smaller. So the only way around it is to use the Reader mode in Safari and increase the text size. If you are not using the Mini as a Reader but for iTunes Radio or games then it doesn't matter. But for reading, the device is lacking.

You realize the Wifi iPads do not have a GPS receiver, right? Only the cellular ones do.

I think he was talking about tethering from a phone to the iPad: using his phone as a hotspot.

This Target deal is for a non-retina ipad.

The original iPad mini is fine. It used to be slow but since ios 7.1.1 battery life and performance is fine. Also if you turn on bold text under the options the screen and text become much more legible. In fact it doesn't bother me at all anymore now that I have it on bold. It's a great device for browsing, Netflix and other simple tasks.

After all it's just a tablet how much power do you really need for video playback and some CNN.com? If you need more power just use a computer.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try

I almost jumped on this deal. My 7 year olds always take over my iPad 4 to play game and watch Netflix when they are over. I was going to buy them their own then decided not to. I'll be getting the next generation iPad when it's released later this year so I'll just give them mine. Then I saw this deal. I can get it for $189. with my Red Card. I didn't notice that it was a non-retina display. Yeah it's for kids but I still rather have them have a retina unit. So I guess I'll stick with the original plan. Still a pretty good deal though.

I don't necessarily read novels on the ipad but it replaces my MacBook Pro for Forum sites, email, Jalopnik, and articles from CNN, so I guess reading, thanks!

My suggestion is to try it and decide. You have 30 days for an exchange or refund with Target.

That gets the iPad a data connection, but still not a GPS. You'd be able to get map data, but still not know where you are (unless Apple is somehow sharing the GPS connection over wifi as well). Does this actually work? I'd try it, but I use an Android phone.
