If you have a jailbreaked iPhone, never ever upgrade the iOS version until your jailbreak provider told you so. Its a basic info, sorry you didn't knew that.
Maybe in a couple of days there is a jailbreak for 4.1

If you choose download only, then the next time you plug into iTunes, you get the do you wanna install question with the Don't remind me again checkbox.

You have to admit Apple did design a sneaky trap to fall into.

1. Do you want to upgrade or download only?
2. They then make the Upgrade button so tempting.
3. Then that short, multi minute wait for the download

C'mon, you have to admit this is a trap, right?:eek:

I guess to someone without previous experience it can be confusing.

Just remember, if in doubt, pull the USB cord out ! (Obviously before the restore actually begins :)

So from what I am reading, you can only jailbreak your iPhone once?
When a jailbreak for 4.1 comes available, how do you update your currenly jailbroken iPhone?

I thought all you had to do was update to 4.1 w/ itunes and then do the jailbreak for 4.1.

This is not the case?

I'm reading the guy can never jailbreak again after the update.

Not once in a lifetime.
Basicly each time you restore to official firmware thru itunes you lose your JB and unlock and you go back to factory settings.
Once a JB for 4.1 is out for example you can restore to official 4.1 and then JB it. Or in some cases with pwnage tool you can restore to custom/jailbroken IPSW.

I don't even feel sorry for people who "accidentally" update. It's been mentioned millions of times and you have to be a complete moron to watch iTunes download the new iOS and then watch it install on your device

Same here.
They're just not thinking at all.
They think they will update the phones firmware but the JB and unlock will stay forever untouched:rolleyes:
Some tend to learn the hard way.

This process might be obvious for those who follow this forum or who know about this world, but not for someone who just got a phone from a friend and just plays around with it.

I joined in July because that's when I got by Macbook. I never got into the iPhone forum.

It's unbelievable how people can spend time writing messages such as the above. I hope this thread could be helpful for people in a similar situation but I can see how many people enjoying this ridiculous 'virtual bullying'. Mysteries of the web.

You don't use Redsn0w to downgrade, you use iTunes

Redsn0w is to re-jailbreak once you get to 3.1.2

Sorry to say this OP but I see now why you lost your JB and UL.
If you get this fixed, I recommend you take a couple of hours and read every thread on pages 1-2-3. It will help you out.

Thank you - will do that.

Today I did what I should not have done: updating to 4.1 on a ultrasn0w jailbroken phone. The result is that my phone has become completely unusable and that there is no way to restore the unlock with redsn0w. I know the release of a new jailbreak method for 4.1 is imminent but I wonder if I will be able to recover my phone which seems to be ultra-locked now. Has anyone heard similar stories?

There's no trap. It's a feature upgrade that you chose to download and install.

Although you may soon be able to jailbreak your phone, there is no telling when a new unlock will be released. You have upgraded your baseband (aka modem firmware), rendering your phone locked for the foreseeable future. Please note: this is true even if you manage to downgrade your OS, since the baseband is not downgradable.

Noob here too- so he can't at least restore the phone to stock just so it works?

update

Alright,

using iTunes and setting the phone in DFU mode, I downgraded the iPhone to os 3.1.2 using the following file:

iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

However, when I load this IPSW file on redsn0w (I am told they have to be the same), redsn0w does not recognise it as valid.

Are you using redsn0w 0.9.2?

No, I was using 9.5.5b5-5

I will look for the version you mentioned.

Thanks to all those who are following me in this painful step-by-step process. I know it's hard to deal with noobs like me. But some philosopher said 'never forget the beginner's mind'.

trust me thelatinist knows what he is talking about even if you downgrade the biggest problem is the baseband which can not be downgraded. so downgrading it now is not worth the effort I would wait for the next jailbreak. which should be out soon.this is why we never upgrade until we are either told it's ok, or next jailbreak is released. for now you are sol..

Ok, I used redsn0w 0.9.2 and tried to jailbreak the device using

iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

after I downgraded to 3.1.2 using iTunes. Still the only thing I see on the iPhone is the cable telling me to plug into iTunes. It looks like the baseband has been permanently locked?

That appears to be the case: I have momentarily restored OS 4.1 - I can still use WIFI, iPod etc.

Thanks

Ya don't sweat it, happens to the best of us. Just wait for the JB..or try to downgrade.

Apple's "AN UPDATE IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR iPhone!" message is too strong for eager people with weak minds to resist.

Or they made sure that Apple's IPhone 4.0 sucked so bad, that went 'others' reported that it fixed the slowness, proximity problems and all those other 'bugs' that some thought 'It could not be any worst!'

Surprise! Apple was able to make it worst!
:(

I think that Apple has been taking lessons from Microsoft.

Release a piece of poop, with a lot of bugs, so that people will go do the 'upgrade' thing without enough research.

Yes, I screwed up, and did not do enough research.

Now I am thinking about getting off this stupid Apple ride and going to Motorola + Android.

Sounds like you need an unlock more than a jailbreak. The downside is you upgraded your baseband when you upgraded the firmware. May be quite some time before they have another unlock. This is why I would never give or tell anyone to buy a software unlocked phone. If you do it yourself you have the knowledge and technical experience to know what you can and can't do. You should have just went with AT&T ;-)

update

I manage to downgrade to os 4.0 and have cydia back on.
However Fuzzyband does not seem to recognise my baseband, which was locked since I upgraded to 4.1

Is there any fix for this?

No as has been said multiple times in this thread. No downgrading baseband. You will have to wait for a new unlock which may happen with 4.1 or you may have to wait for 4.2 or maybe even longer than that. If you really need it unlocked you may be better off selling and buying a different iPhone because it could be months before you can unlock again.
