How is the new 'photos' app ? Are we looking at the typical 'apple replacement' for an existing app - which comes with less features and severely cripples productivity until 16 updates down the line (after an outcry from masses of consumers, complaining about lost functionality) - or is it at least as functional as iPhoto (not even going to compare it to poor old Aperture which has likewise been put out to pasture).

Sounds like it! iWork is still missing functionally lost in 2013...

So how will this update handle iPhoto? Will it delete iphoto? because current beta of Photos just copy the entire photo database without deleting iPhoto.

Curious about this too. My father has almost 75GB of photos, will the entire folder structure remain untouched?

Is Apple sure they don't want to put out seven or eight more betas? I was starting to think these were actually betas for 10.11. Hopefully all with all the releases, they've been able to work out major bugs. Although, I'm sure we'll still hear about plenty of bugs on these forums. :)

It leaves the original library untouched.

Once you upgrade, any new changes in Photos will not be made in iPhoto however.

It uses "Hard Links" which means it wont take up any extra space even though it duplicates the library.

Overall the app has been excellent, although it took a little a few tries on iOS to get them to sync properly. Between my two Macs however it has been flawless and amazing.

it moves your iPhoto events into a list called "imported from iPhoto" in the photo app. it's basically a folder for each event. I am not sure if it's actually moved or copied tho. judging by the size of both libraries it seems to have copied everything however

I wonder if a final iOS 8.3 will be coming as well (with iCloud Photo Library no longer in beta).

Does anyone know if the new Photos App has the "World" view, where you have a world map and pins pinned in places you took the photos? I really love that view.

Still so concerned about the Wifi issues that I still haven't updated to Yosemite. :(

been using the OS X betas' since they became available and had no issues at all, and going from iPhoto to photos was quick and simple

If you press Cmd+I to get info it gives you a small map that shows pin locations. However, you can only see about one continent at a time, and the map can't be made bigger.

Yes, all events are preserved and turned into Albums.

It is "copied" but takes no extra space because of "hard links."

My iPhoto library is hugely important to me so I'm already duplicating my iPhoto library just in case this "up"date goes bad.

Same! it's a MESS. I have tried it but I have no idea what's actually in the cloud and what's stored local then I delete sth from my Photostream but for some reason those pics stay in the all photos tab. there's no consistency at all and I feel like I have no control over what's "mine.

I did away with Photostream a couple of years ago because yeah, it was a total mess. I now manage my iToys photos manually with Image Capture (to delete unwanted photos) and copying+deleting them through iPhoto.

If it doesn't I'm definitely not upgrading!

The new "TV static" view from iOS7 is terrible.

No it does not, or not that I can find. You also cannot place photos onto a map after the fact.

Boo! Staying away from Photos app!

I'm staying on iPhoto FOREVER!!! :D

Yeah! Excited to try Photos out. :D

iPhoto didn't disappear with the OS X 10.10.3 versions.

Does anyone with the developer/public beta versions have an issue with the volume control button in terms of responsiveness? It's been very laggy for me with the last beta.

What! That's rubbish. I love viewing my photos from the map view. Good way to browse through old holiday snaps. Getting more worried about this now.

Does Photos have the ability to selectively sync with iCloud? My photo library is WAY bigger than the 20GB that I pay for (and I don't really care to pay for more space).

The beta version would not recognize my iPhoto library which resides on an external drive. Fingers crossed...

having been part of the public beta, I can say that Photos has improved quite a bit since the first beta. I think that it is very good and the syncing to iCloud took a few days (15000 photos), but worked. Now I have no issues other than Faces. It brought over many of the Face tags but not all (may have been a problem with an early beta), but it totally failed to bring over the thousands of ignores that I had. Now I have tons of faces that I have to ignore and it seems to never end.

With that exception, it is working better for me than iphotos. One thing, the OSX version has more editing capabilities than the iOS version.

As I see it with the beta in Finder, it IS copied and it takes up extra space.

Can you explain then why in beta I have two photo libraries both 20 something GB and a 'pictures folder' that is 40 something GB?
