My biggest hassle right now is having multiple iPhoto libraries without a way to consolidate them.

Does the Photos app have the ability to import and consolidate multiple iPhoto libraries into the new app?

^ This would be really great, agreed it would be nice if it had that option.

i guess I'm the only one

who thinks that the new photo app is rubbish ;( will have to move to lightroom.

the only way to actually measure calories when you do weight lifting is by having and hearth rate sensor... soo it should be able to record any type of exercise .

and also how people are saying review arent good.... how is the best smartchwatch in the world not good? of course if not for everyone! many people have samsungs or they just dont want them, but that doesnt make it bad.

also the conversation with the girl its a bad example. first you should have the watch on silent mode, second if you are talking to someone you can just keep talking raise your hand see how send the message get your arm down dimiss it and keep talking. you dont even have to stop talking......

wat?

Wtf? lol

You're comparing Photos to Lightroom?

That's like comparing iTunes to Ableton or FL Studio.

i'm questioning the accuracy of this source? are they guessing the release is today or they know something we don't know? guess we will find out in a couple of hours...

been using the OS X betas' since they became available and had no issues at all, and going from iPhoto to photos was quick and simple

That's my experience also, but I only organize the photo's from the iPhone with Photo's, not the pictures taken with my DSLR. I do not want to use iCloud storage with the large amount of photo's (Nikon D800, 40Mb for each photo... At this moment more than 250Gb)

I had sometime an small issue with the address bar in safari when the macbook came out of sleep state; is disappeared and after 2 re-starts of safari the address bar was available again. But besides that no issues.

----------

I currently use picasa because I can't stand iPhoto and I prefer to organize my photos in folders. Does the new Photos app put all the photos in a database like iPhoto or does it work with folders?

Given all the comments about the lack of functionality should I just stick with picasa (which I like, but has been largely abandoned by Google)?

It uses a library just like iPhoto. It is not the same as for instance Lightroom where you have a folder structure (and library) which you can acces with Finder and look up every picture separately.

In all of the reviews and comments of the new Photos app there never seems to be any mention of how well iPhone videos work in the app and cloud. I hope there's an option to keep videos out of the cloud for those of us with gigantic video libraries?

Here is what I did to migrate to iCloud Photo Library and Photos last week with the pre-release.

1. From Mac Mini Copied my iPhoto Library to a external drive (extra copy).
2. Bought more iCloud Storage - picked the 200gb at $3.99 per month
3. My iPhoto Library was showing 48gb in Finder with 6252 items.
6130 Photos and 122 Videos.
4. Installed and converted library to Photos on Mac which copied all of my Photos and Videos to iCloud. To my surprise it is showing a little more then 21.8gb of iCloud Storage for Photo Library. I recommend buy more then you need and then after conversion take another look.
5. The upload did not take long on my 75/75 FIOS Connection.
6. Once I uploaded I downloaded all originals to my Macbook Air, iPhone and iPad. Be patient on all of these transfers. You can see that status on multiple places.
7. Once that all worked well (and tested) I removed the New Photo Library on my Mac Mini because it was showing the migration library and the photo library as being larger then they really are. Confusing to me so wanted a clean start. You may not want to do this because you may loose Metadata. Again, I wanted a fresh start after some playing around with it and I did not have much Metadata. Again, you may not want to do this.
8. Had to close iTunes and Photos to do #7. Also, made a backup first.
9. I then started and created a New Photo Library on my Mac Mini.
10. I then download iCloud to my Mac Mini and both my computers showing almost the same size in Finder.

Some hints on usage:
1. In iPhoto I organized all of my photos in Events which is a physical organization and then I used Smart Albums/Folders to group them based on event name. I would then use Smart Albums/Folders in iTunes to Sync to my devices. In Photos they only have the "Photos" Folder on the left panel which is all of my Photos in date order. This is the main physical storage. Everything else is really just a logical view (folders and albums) of your "Photos" Folder except for the Sharing Album it appears.
2. My Events were put in a Logical Folder called iPhoto Events and in there it created an Album for each event. Again, this is not physical. I would call them references or links to the real "Photos" Folder.
3. All Albums have an option to Delete a Photo or Remove a Photo from the Album. The Delete will remove from the library but the Remove just removes from the Album. You can delete an Album and you Photos are still in physical "Photos" folder. Do you own testing here to be sure you really go it.
4. I then started to create Metadata. However, not all Metadata gets Synced. You should do your own testing. Mainly Faces is what I have noticed that are not Synced.
5. You can easily select all pictures in an Album and add 1 or more Keywords which do get Synced. This appears to be the only Metadata you can apply to a group of selected pictures.
6. I also started to add Face Tags but they do not appear to Sync so mainly only doing that on my Mac Mini hoping at some point it will Sync to iCloud and to my other devices.
7. I then created Smart Albums using both the Keywords and Face Tags.
8. My Apple TV has not been updated yet so not sure if will get more options. But at this point it can only see Shared Albums from the iCloud Photo Library. I am hoping it can see more from my Mac Mini once out of beta but not counting on it.
9. Smart Albums do not Sync to my iPhone or iPad. Only to my Macbook Air. So Smart Albums are only Mac Photo App unless you do a iTunes Sync.
10. You can still Sync Smart Albums in iTunes to your iOS Devices. My wife has not converted so I was able to Sync my Photo Library to her iPhone and iPad in iTunes just selecting Smart Albums.
11. You can not Share Smart Albums. You have to COPY Photos to a Share Album. This appears to be a limitation for my use. But could be good for getting Photos from my wife's Phone to our main library. I wish there were better sharing options with the Family Sharing but appears to be limited.
12. Since it will only Sync Albums (without using iTunes) then you have to COPY your Photos to Album. Which is cumbersome because it is just a reference to the real photo. Since I organize my Smart Albums (automatically after tagging) I prefer not doing this. But may have to if Apple will not support Sync of Smart Albums in the near future. Of course you can use Albums to organize and then use Smart Albums to select from regular Albums but since Albums are not a physical organization I prefer the other approach for now. May change later so not removing my Event Albums just yet. But plan to tag all photos in each Event Album with a Keyword.

Why, iPhoto is cr@p? I moved to Aperture a long time ago. I'm going to keep Aperture and give Photos a shot. I was surprised to see most of what I use Aperture for in the pix I saw of Photos, so I will give it a fair shot today.

Same boat here. I will keep everything that I've done with Aperture over the years where it is and start fresh just to see what this is like. I don't take as many pics as before anyway, and I will probably always use PhotoShop for the heavy lifting if something needs extensive processing. We'll see how we go. I'm still miffed at Apple for axeing the pro level photo package before parity was achieved with the new solution, but all the complaining in the world's not going to bring it back. sigh.

3....

Thank you for the detailed information.

The iOS Photos app has a Faces option: Photos > Albums > Faces. Could you double-check to see if your faces are syncing to here or not?

Thanks!

Can someone share how syncing multiple accounts works with Photos? Can my wife and I sync our phones to the same iCloud storage account?

I've read that with Family Sharing, users can share some photos, but I'd like to automatically sync all photos.

How does it all work?

Thanks!

Can photos be stored on local hd only?

I have upwards of 10,000 RAW photos in Aperture and certainly don't want to have to pay extra costs on iCloud to store these.:(
With the new Photo app, can I skip the iCloud storage and stay local only?

Does anyone know if the new Photos App has the "World" view, where you have a world map and pins pinned in places you took the photos? I really love that view.

I know a few others have said "no" (maybe it wasn't available in the beta?), but you can do this by clicking on the gray geographic text next to any date (for example at the year level, or month level) and it will show you locations for that year / month / etc on a map.

HTH!

Yes local only is an option. You can also use the existing iCloud options you had with iPhoto in Photos from what I've read.

I could not find a way to get Faces on iOS Devices. I also did not see it as an option for iTunes Sync which does include Smart Albums. Appears to be local to the Mac that created them. Not even Synced to second Mac. Just do not think it is Synced with iCloud at this time.

Regarding sharing with your wife without using the same iCloud ID (maybe a second iCloud iD on our device) you have to create Shared Albums which is a pain for me.

----------

Earlier I posted about limitations of Apple TV and Photos. You can create Photo Sharing with Apple TV on the Mac in iTunes and it WILL Share your Smart Albums along with normal Albums. This can be accessed under Computer or for the Screen Savor. However, the iCloud Photos App will only see the Shared Albums. I don't understand whey it can not see my entire iCloud Photo Library even without Smart Albums. I.E. Like my iOS Devices.

I am missing something?

Am I the only person who doesn't like the organisational system in the new photos app? Coming from iPhoto where everything is organised nearly into events whichever way we choose, the new app just throws all photos in together with no say over how to organise them. Putting them into albums just isn't the same.

However, I am a fan of the design and speed.

Photos app has smart albums which are really the same thing as Events if you set it up that way. And your own custom smart albums will give you much more control than Events. Then there's the Moments and Collections and other built in smart albums.

Finally!

I've been testing every beta released to developers, and this final release and the beta just before it finally fixed my wifi DNS cache issues.

I'm sorry but smart albums really aren't the same as events. If I delete a photo in an album does it delete the actual file? No.

Must be doing something wrong, started photos - no sign of any automatic import of iPhoto Library - only thing I can think of is my data is on my second HDD rather than my SSD.

Attempted to direct photos in import from my iPhoto Library but it is greyed out.

oh well......

I am an Aperture user since I had ditched iPhoto in early days.

The feature that made me use Aperture is renaming during import. I had my photos renamed on-the-fly to date-time taken. So it's always nicely sorted and dates are visible at first glance, stored in a folder I specified.

Just checked out the new Photos app, disappointed that the renaming feature is not there.

I agree not the same but you can Delete Photos from a Smart Folder or an Album and it will remove from the Library. Or you can just Remove from an Album and not actually Delete from the Library.
