MacBook (Late 2006) C2D 2.0GHz 1GB 80GB. Update was 74MB, so it's not just SR that got something more...

And I've got the speaker popping. I think coreaudiod is behaving oddly. But - I have a solution! Well, there's 2.

1) Downgrade.
2) Use an iMic to connect the speakers.

Looks like in fixing the problems with Core Audio from 10.4.9, they actually made new problems for people who didn't have the originals. Nice.

A-ok

Can anyone tell me if the 10.4.10 breaks the current Shapeshifter version?

I won't install it until it's safe :)

I've installed 10.4.10 and I use ShapeShifter. So far all my guiKits seem to be working just fine.

Working well on MBCD

Working well so far on a 2ghz MB Core Duo. Couple of restarts required, no noticeable differences.

No it shouldn't because you actually can get data corruption once it has finished copying on a Mac (I actually have), unlike Windows.

Also you can just reformat them when you have a problem ;).

Yes, but I'm suggesting it's still turned on by default, but that in System Preferences or Finder Preferences you could turn the message off. That way those that understand the risks can turn it off and run the risk. Those that don't and just want to turn it off can also, but if they get any corruption, they have nobody the blame but themselves.

So far, I have never had one corrupted by a Mac. The closest I have had to problems with flash drives is when I've trashed files and forgot to empty trash before removing. I think if you eject properly it deletes the files first, (if it doesn't, it should), but if you don't eject first, you definitely have problems regaining that space without either plugging it back into that same Mac or more likely formatting.

Thanks, I was beginning to think I was going nuts. I remember that with 10.4.9 the volume in my MB increased (just one or two lines would suffice if I was in my room).
Now with 10.4.10 the max volume is the same. But 2 lines won't suffice, at least 6 lines are required to have the same volume as before.

I'm experiencing the same here on my C2D iMac.

Same problem on my iMac. It's really annoying.

Yeah, same problem on my iMac. Every once and a while there's that little pop through my digital external speakers. Also, when I'm watching video (and presumably when playing music), the sound will cut out for a split second and then come back in. grrrr

Help

My MBP locked up 3 times since installing 10.4.10 last night. It locks up after 10 minutes of normal use. I disconnected everything (second monitor, all USB devices) and it still locked up. Any ideas?

Combo or not to Combo

I always install the combo just to make sure everything is covered. Others think it makes no difference. I do. Call it superstition or just plain old conservatism. I'd rather be safe than sorry something was overlooked due to a glitch in a previous update or a hidden correction in something from a previous version.

Those on MacFixIt suggest to always use the combo installer. It's like you said, it makes sure every thing was install correctly.

Ahh, yes. I remember that. I don't even remember what my PowerBook was doing, but it was NOT good. Apple pulled it, then re-released it... and whoever had a WORKING computer didn't even want to install 10.2.8.1 (lol) because they were afraid it would make things even worse. :)

I don't think anybody had a pleasurable experience with the (first) 10.2.8.

I installed the first 10.2.8 and had no problems at all. I also didn't have any problems. :/

Are you using any 3rd party software that affects the general system? If so I'd try removing those and see if it has any effect.

USB drive

Is anyone else having trouble with a their USB HD's after the update? My USB HD locks up the finder as soon as it starts up. It worked fine before the 10.4.10 update.

Windows does it. It writes the data to the USB stick immediately as it might be removed at any time, *nix OS's (including OS X) don't do this.

And if you pull it out while anything is writing, you can get data corruption either in the file or in the directory. Write caching can further complicate matters since it makes it more difficult to determine when the writes are really finished.

:)

As always -NO update problems.

iMac 2.1 ghz G5

I will say Safari and the whole finder seems to be much quicker.

The only audio problem is my wifes' Celine Dion songs in iTunes.

Did you disconnect all USB devices before running Software Update and installing 10.4.10?

Did you have any USB devices physically connected (powered on or off, mounted or not) while running Software Update and installing 10.4.10?

10 is very different to .10

For example: 5.5 liters is the same as 5.50 liters and is also the same as 5.5000000 liters.

And 5.5.5 liters is the same as 5.50.50 liters???????????? Huh?

Those aren't numbers in any number system that has been widely used - yet - because the periods are NOT decimals, but periods.

If software makers used commas (10,4,10),

Of course then people would be saying it was something like:
1,000 = version one thousand
10,000,000 = version 10 million

or in this case: 10,4,10
would be 10 million, 4 thousand and 10 since they were leaving out leading 0s:
10,004,010

(Unless you are in some parts of the world were commas are used for decimal points or division marks etc)
:)

I learned from the previous Mac OS update (10.4.9) to repair my disk permissions before installing the update, as I had to do a repair install last time. Just installed it, now time to reboot....(*crosses fingers*).

And as the installer runs as root and ignores all permissions, you wasted your time.
