Did you disconnect all USB devices before running Software Update and installing 10.4.10?

Did you have any USB devices physically connected (powered on or off, mounted or not) while running Software Update and installing 10.4.10?

No. I left it in while the update ran. I went as far to do a "Archive and Install" that didn't help at all. I have a seven port usb hub 100gig usb HD and a Dazzle card reader. They were all on at the time

Sound issues

Just wondering if there was a chance that someone could record the sound issue they are talking about and post it here.

I have had a few sound issues with my macmini, and was wondering if it is anything like what I have. And if it isn't then I'm not going to update the OS. Even though since 10.4.7 or 8 my MacMini has become VERY slow and heavy. Don't know what to do about it. Or how to solve it.

I fear it will make it even slower and useless when I go 10.4.10 or 10410

Thanks to whom ever is kind enough to record the sound for us...

And as the installer runs as root and ignores all permissions, you wasted your time.

Yes, I wasted 20 seconds of my time because the last OS update I installed, 10.4.9, rendered my computer unbootable. I posted on these forums and people told me that I should have repaired permissions before installing the update. Sorry if I wanted to make sure my computer booted after the update...

Thanks for answering. This is further proof that installing anything in Software Update with USB (or FireWire) stuff connected is a bad idea.

I hope you get everything back up and running.

So far, I have never had one corrupted by a Mac. The closest I have had to problems with flash drives is when I've trashed files and forgot to empty trash before removing. I think if you eject properly it deletes the files first, (if it doesn't, it should), but if you don't eject first, you definitely have problems regaining that space without either plugging it back into that same Mac or more likely formatting.

I unfortunately also learned the hard way. Occasionally USB flash drives seem to get "stuck" -- you hit eject, but they don't actually unmount -- and in my impatience I just yanked it out anyway, having just copied a pile of PowerPoint presentations onto it.

A small voice in the back of my head said "you should verify the presentations copied onto the stick OK" but the reality was it was very late at night and I needed my sleep.

The next day I brought in my USB stick and popped it into the PC at the presentation site, and copied all those presentations to the PC hard drive, overwriting the older versions that had been on the drive (as I had taken them home to update the night before).

To my horror, when we tried to open the presentations, we found that every single one of them had become corrupted. And, of course, I had JUST overwritten the "last known good" versions that had been on the PCs, too.

We had to scramble, 10 minutes before presentation time, to find an overhead projector and transparencies. And now I double-check the file on the stick as well as email a copy to myself, just in case.

Then my friend you must not have been around during the GREAT 10.2.8 UPDATE...

Apple released that update and then a lot of people were left with $1000-$3000 paper weights on their desks and laps. What was it folks, 2 days later???? that Apple released Ver 2 or 10.2.8 to fix the pulled update.

Yeah, I remember that. You guys were fun then... :p

Excellent update:) .

It's just good to know that I'm just that little bit safer and my system is a little speedier.:p :apple:

Vista to the rescue

If the presentation PC had been running Vista, you could have done a context-click on the files and selected "Restore Previous Versions".

Cool.

Other then the USB HD trouble the update is fine. You think the HD might be dead? There is power going to it. The finder goes right to beachball and I have to do a forced restart.

Funny enough, I never had this issue on my iMac running 10.4.9. I just upgraded to 10.4.10 and now i get the popping in my speakers... and its driving me NUTS!!!! This is beyond annoying... please don't tell me I need to reformat just to fix this....

Anyone know a fix??

Not that I could find...sorry :(

Thats one of the reasons why I reformated. If you do find a fix, please pm me so I can update to 10.4.10!! hehe. Good luck!

So, the drive shows up and mounts? You just get a Finder beachball when trying to access it? Maybe eject it, disconnect the USB cable from your computer, log out, log back in and reconnect the USB cable?

So is this the most stable version of Tiger? Always upgrade just before the new release comes out. :p

um. actually, as much as microsoft says its "safe" to use thumb drives this way, past experience with corrupted data has taught me to remove/unmount devices "safely/properly" before unplugging, regardless of the settings for read/write cacheing.

That is the truth. The numerous times that Windows XP and 2000 corrupted files (that aren't open) because I forgot to safely remove the device has taught me to do it the proper way and to have a backup copy. Nevertheless, there are times both with PCs and Macs that I have accidently removed them prematurely and haven't had problems.

Well, upgraded my 533 G4 digital audio from system 9 (not sure now, (7?) years later, which version!) through almost every update, apart from 10.0, as i went straight to 10.1. Never a glitch, so maybe the problems are not as widespread as this forum might make you think!

Heh, not only my Mac was screwed, so were (some of) the rest of the Macs in my school. :) It didn't affect them ALL.

Post-update, my iMac 24" audio (external speakers) now has a hum and click problem after update, like when the computer is off and the speakers are still on.
Yes, I repaired permissions, but, no, I didn't unplug my USB or Firewire drives before updating. Rebooting, using Disk Warrior and re-repairing permissions does not help.
Tomorrow I will have to restore to 10.4.9 using my back-up disk (which has no click and hum problem). Or, maybe I'll zap the PRAM first...

edit: just reset PRAM--speakers still hum and click

Might try to reinstall update with no peripherals plugged in.

The excess noise comes and goes....and then stays....

Depends if 10.5 slips again and they come out with 10.4.11.

Actually, there's plenty of time for a .11 and .12 anyway - if for nothing else than to fix the bugs with external HD support.

I find it hard to believe that Apple will not continue fixing bugs past 10.4.10. I do expect .11 and .12 even after 10.5 is out. Past 12 who knows.

The 10.4.10 problem reminds me a lot of the 2000 problems from computers not recognizing the digits.

Uno 1.5.1 does not like the 10.4.10 either, saying it requires 10.4.4 or higher.

This is a problem that could affect a lot of installers. Either the developers need to address it, or Apple needs to release a "trick" patch, a la Windows did for application compatibility.

I wonder how many other applications would fail because of that reason.

Cannot login to an account

After 5 reboots on my quad core MacPro the machine still refuses to allow access to the admin account. The MAIN account on this machine. It flashes the logon screen, permits typing the password then simply comes back with the logon screen. Frustrating. All other accounts are accessible.

I hope this is fixable

I had this problem with an account once. I believe that emptying the cache files in /Library/Cache finally fixed this problem for me.

10.2.8

Then my friend you must not have been around during the GREAT 10.2.8 UPDATE...

Apple released that update and then a lot of people were left with $1000-$3000 paper weights on their desks and laps. What was it folks, 2 days later???? that Apple released Ver 2 or 10.2.8 to fix the pulled update.

Exactly! That's the worst case I've ever seen. I updated to Mac OS 10.2.8 when it first came out, and I happened to have one of those Macs where the update killed my internet connection. I ended up having to get the Apple Ethernet kernel extension file from another computer and find a way to transfer the file to my main Mac to fix the problem.

I even found that original .kext file a few days ago....ah, memories...

Also the 10.4.0 of Tiger had problems with my D-link wireless router and long computer names. Shortening the computer name (or upgrading to 10.4.1) fixed the problem.

Otherwise, I haven't had any real problems with updating my home computer.

Airport messed up after update

I installed the combo update on my core duo macbook and now airport doesn't work right. In the Network Preferences panel next to AirPort

"AirPort is connected to the network ***. AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."

It works fine with ethernet.

And we can't blame it on the router because my core duo iMac is working fine on the same network after the update. However, on the iMac it wasn't the combo update.
