Save as = duplicate
Save = save a version.
Both are in the file menu of text edit and other select applications.

Pretty simple. Same thing just a different name.
Save as really is saving a duplicate file.
Save a version, well you can just use it as save and forget the whole version thing exists if you want to. But it's there if you ever need it.

This works in text edit. i do it all the time.

Upvoted your comment. I don't know why this gets down voted. Ofcourse it's hard and annoying to get used to doing things differently. This change was necessary because of autosave (re-save first(now called duplicate), THEN work).

Smart cards?

Smart cards are still a going concern? Welcome to 2005. How does one log into a Mac with a smart card?

Unless they totally replaced the inexcusably incompetent Address Book and iCal UIs, why bother?

And is there finally a way to read E-books on the Mac?

And did they make the "reopen windows when logging back in" checkbox save its state? I'm SO TIRED OF DEACTIVATING THIS EVERY GODDAMNED TIME I SHUT DOWN.

You wonder what Apple is doing half the time.

Does auto save just do a normal save or does it save a version?
Cause if it saves a version you can just look back into the versions history to pick the one you want.

I agree it can get annoying to change when you get used to doing something a particular way. Yes hard but not impossible.

You do not like this feature. I like it. I think it's fantastic. But I agree they should have it as a system preferences click option. So you turn it on or off once. And not have to click it every time.

I see why they have it on shutdown though. Cause for some people they won't know if they want all their windows to re-open on restart. it'd be different each time.

Exactly. The state should be persistent. I don't even care if it defaults to ON after you install the OS. I click it ONCE, and from then on I don't have to worry about it. And people like you, who like the feature, would never have to do anything. Everyone is happy.

But that's common sense, which is unknown at Apple.

The problem with the autosave is that as I understand it, it is not so much an OS function as written into the apps included with the OS. So I don't think a simple on/off switch will help, sadly.

As for versions, the problem with something that saves regular copies of files is that if you need to revert back to an earlier one, you need to go through them all to work out which one contains the changes you want back. That and it doesn't work on any file system that is not native to Mac, so you can forget it on most USB pen drives or memory cards that are formatted as FAT.

You should make a duplicate anyway. It's safer. Let's say you have a 30 page document. You just want to open it and play around, but maybe not save anything. Let's say your finger accidentally hit the S and W at almost the same time but didn't notice, when you were intending to press Command-W to close the document. Now you just saved your changes, closed the document, and you won't realize it until the next time you open it.
I'll take the chance rather than have my computer automatically save every 5 seconds.

We're in a transition. MS already announced support for autosave. It works great on the iPhone/iPad because everybody implemented it. Third parties will eventually update their apps and it will be the same as on iOS. Seamless.

My iMac is not a 27" smartphone ;)

What do you mean? I haven't seen that in my iCloud prefs in any .3 build.

There's a few screenshots on the Apple seed website/forum which show all the labels for iCloud preferences say Contacts rather than what they should do.

It should look like this..

but for some all the labels say Contacts - though the icon is correct

I'm new to the Macintosh world, so somebody please get these things clear. This is the third "free maintainance update". Do I have to be afraid of any update (I mean the "small" ones, not the main versions like Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc.) being non-free?

I hope that's not the case. Thanks for the reply!

Don't worry :)

10.5 (Leopard)
10.6 (Snow Leopard)
10.7 (Lion) are paid updates.

10.5.x
10.6.x
10.7.x are free

Personal preferences aside, there are still some issues with autosave/versions.

1) Versions can't be moved over to other machines, not supported on PC or earlier OSX. The way the file format works, sounds like they are probably even lost some of the time they're sent to other 10.7 machines.

2) Older versions are pruned, with no user control and not even a notification to the user. Basically you can't count on having anything but the latest version after some length of time has passed

3) Since the versions are stored in an OS folder instead of with the document, they don't get a normal backup with Time Machine (or anything else set up to back up the documents).

Partly it's people resistant to change, but a major part is Apple shipping it with a half baked implementation.

If I install the dev update, is my lion install ruined after this?
Or will the update checker work to download 10.7.4 when it comes?

To be clear, is the dev update activate some developer or debugging "****" or is it just to install and then use the regular updater to download updates?

I believe some people don't like it as in the following example in regards to "Save a Version"/"Auto-Save" (different features but somewhat related to the issue).

This poses an issue with coding or other long form documents as auto-save/saving versions becomes a hinderance when needing to retract temporary changes that you don't want saved until you are certain it is correct. It would be difficult thumbing through older versions of that working document to extract the code or changes you didn't want saved. I believe that's what some have stated. Make sense? :)

On another note, I've been using "Mission Control" since DP1 and trying my hardest to assimilate to Expose and Spaces being redesigned. Yes, I am one of the many who preferred Leopard/Snow Leopard's Expose/Spaces and desperately want "All Windows" back for Expose. Having come back to MR from a long reprieve I did discover a solution to Spaces in the threads, called "Change Space." Still a work in progress, but v2.2.0 is a great foundation and works very much as previous Spaces. The menubar has the desktop indicator again and in conjunction with other developers is spot on to 10.5/6. The remaining issue is returning to desktop 1 as it seems to keep you on desktop 4 (switching to "Mission Control" for desktop 1 is the only current solution). It's also only configurable for keyboard shortcuts, it would be nice to make use of the trackpad.

As for 10.7.3's Expose in "Mission Control," perhaps it's me but I noticed a change in this release. The two finger swipe up in "MC" to separate application windows seems to separate them further, allowing for easier access to a buried app window. Before it barely moved the grouped windows out of the way. Perhaps the engineers are trying to make it work with those who miss "All Windows."

If you have a copy of 10.7.3 as a non-developer there is no issue with installations as it doesn't check your system or "phone in" to verify accounts. You should have no issue with installing it in future updates (although I do not endorse non-developer use of beta updates). :)

Thanks, then I'll give it a try :)
Only because it's supposed to be the golden master, which should be the same as the final update.

Have you or anybody from Appleseed filed a bug report on that ? I have never seen that on any build of .3

Although I do remember seeing something like that on earlier seeds of 10.7.1 about the time iCloud went into service.

Yeah, mine has always looked like that. Ive never seen it all say "Contacts"

Yes I filed a bug report. I'll get a screen shot of it later. I'm tempted to rebuild the test box to see if it comes back

The only issue I have with autosave is that, I actually stopped saving anything. And whenever I want to reinstall OS X, I forget to actually save those things, which aren't saved, and lose them. : )

It's getting downvoted because it's wrong.

Duplicate is not the same thing, and a vastly inferior, clumsier workflow.

So it seems like the new cursors that first appears a few builds ago are staying-- the pointer cursor has reverted to the old version, but the hand cursor for links and the screenshot cursor have kept their new appearance. Snazzy.
