Every 10.x.0 release has been like this. And as I've said, I've had no major issues in my Clean Install yet.

Well, I am a Apple user from OS9 and wend all the way to OS X 10.7GM.
Honestly, together with OS X 10.0 and 10.2, Lion is the worst OS X version ever.
As a developer for OS X for about 6 years now I can also mention that programming for the new APIs is sometimes a hell. You really have to do pull out some tricks to bypass bugs for Lion (read: to keep performance on a good level).

I am going to say it again: not all people see the difference between a 30fps and 60fps shooter. :) People that do not will be happy with OS X 10.7 Lion GM.
On my new Macbook Pro 17 i7 with Intel 3000HD the overall GUI performance is not on par with SL. Jerky graphic animations are things I find very annoying. (and yes, I am very picky on this)
Also, Quartz Debug (included in the Xcode package) shows it IS a lot slower.

In the end it all depends how picky the user will be. If he don't mind using a lesser smooth GUI then Lion will be ok for those.
For me, unfortunality it isn't.

Also, Quartz Debug (included in the Xcode package) shows it IS a lot slower.

How do you test the GUI's fps using Quartz Debug? I have the FrameMeter up but the 'speedometer' widget only ramps up when I move a window or something. It's hard to do something consistently that keeps the FrameMeter from bouncing back and forth.

I really dont get the Launchpad. Seriously, is there one person that is ever going to use this? Common, that should never be included.

BTW yes I know it is meant for touch screens but imo this should not be in OS X.

It's included. Live with it. Don't like it, don't use it. Simple, eh?

QuartzDebug is a debug app for Xcode. With this tool you can monitor screen updates fps. This way you can optimize your app. Most useful when you make apps that have a lot of fx mojo. I use it all the time for my apps to keep them running smooth graphically wise.

In general it can be said that Snow Leopard with Intel 3000HD has a smooth 60fps. Within Lion this drops sometimes under 30fps. (with lows to 20fps).
Some people do not see this difference. Those people will not complain. :)

Anyway, the debug tool is certainly pointing out Lion is running much slower with the Intel 3000HD chipset. Which is used in all new Macbook Pros.

Thanks... I've got QuartzDebug up and running, though my question was more along the lines of how you go about testing so the FrameMeter shows something meaningful. So far I can only get the speedometer to go back and forth without adequate time for me to read it. As someone who is also quite picky about wanting the GUI to move at 60fps, I want to learn how to use this tool properly :D.

I've had about 15 Kernel Panics today with the GM on a mid-2009 MBP. I could see in the reporter that the problem was caused because of the Airport drivers.

There is bug on grapher I found (and reported) which is always reproducible. I think it is related to integrals:

PvZ 1.0.25

Anyone encountered an error saying you can't play the latest version of Plants vs. Zombies under this GM version of Lion? I just played PvZ 1.0.25 while in 11a480e then after the 11a511 update there's a pop-up that keeps on appearing saying that "you can't play this version of the program plants vs. zombies with this version of os x lion". I wonder why?

I've noticed quite a few games crash or fail to work in Lion. I really hope that the developers fix that stuff soon after it comes out and we don't have to wait too long.

Found another issue with Lion GM.

Applescripts are not stable and some standard commands do not work anymore.
For example I have a small script for launching movies and start playing in a loop. This doesn't work anymore.

tell application "QuickTime Player"
activate
open moviefile
set the looping of document 1 to true
play document 1
end tell

Other Applescripts I tried dont always work correct.

Worth mentioning: the new QT docs say it should work this way. So it is most definitely a bug.

Hey guys, I have been a forum lurker for a while, and my first post is to link you to my review of the current GM of Lion, which I disliked in general.

I invite you all to check it out here:

Don't worry, my site is not ad-driven :)

I also noticed that Lion seems to have some problems with my WLAN when SSID broadcast is disabled (for a number of reason). Sometimes it takes too long to establish the connection, sometimes is connects but does not acquire any ID address. I had to put down the iMac with a static IP in the router, now its stable. Must be something with the new implementation, my MBP and iPad/iPhone never had any problems.

Regarding HD3000 issues is it possible that screen compositing is not 3d-accelerated for some reason when using the IPG? I find it very strange that Apple would include inferior drivers into Lion when it works ok for SL. And I doubt they did a complete driver rewrite, usually one just adds some code on top of the old one. There is a new software stack for GL 3.2, maybe something went wrong there...

I think I found another bug or something with the Thunderbolt firmware update. I am sure I updated it via Software update twice already but it still there... it says the update is (for) version 1.0 and is only 93 kb.

And yet another bug:
When you change the settings in preferences/universal access/mouse&trackpad/trackpadoptions:
The scrolling speed and scrolling without inertia are not working on boot. You have to change them on every boot to make the settings work again.

BTW yes, I do not like inertia scrolling. :)

On a 17" feb 11 2.2 i7 MBP with 8GB RAM from crucial and a 300 sad 256 gb.

Getting many system lockups (complete, time machine icon frozen for e.g.) when plugging in 24 inch cinema display. System will not log in if display is plugged in. Have to log in without and then plug in -- then often freezes. Automators watch me do function still not working properly either (can you believe apple went from 10.6-10.6.8 without fixing that?!). What else....performance generally is quite sluggish, tho no graphics glitches as of yet, everything seems quite smooth. Not quite sure on the point of full screen apps tho, maybe its cos I've got a lot of screen real estate...anyway this is not fit for release yet. Would be pissed if id paid and downloaded this from the app store as a normal user.

I've noticed that after upgrading to OSX Lion my wifi / airport drops the connection at random times. It's connected to my Airport Extreme. When it drops and I click on the airport logo I can see the networks, just not connected

And yet another bug:
When you change the settings in preferences/universal access/mouse&trackpad/trackpadoptions:
The scrolling speed and scrolling without inertia are not working on boot. You have to change them on every boot to make the settings work again.

Confirmed. Setting is lost on reboot.

Is this a bug?

Downloaded two of my files from Facebook photos, and they appear to have an odd date modified tag.

The files certainly aren't that old.

Thoughts?

Mac Pro E2008 w/ ATI 5770 X.7 Unusable

Loaded GM clean on Mac Pro early 2008, couldn't even get through setup. Totally unresponsive. Keyboard input tens of second per stroke to input. Thinking what a joke. It dawned on me that it maybe my recent ATI 5770 upgrade from GT 8800. DP3 Worked fine with 8800. Anyone have these issues? Thanks

Same MP but with a PC 260GTX flashed. Works fine so far but I haven't loaded up by way of apps to make a full assessment.

I was wondering if there was a way to bind key shortcuts to Launchpad though.

2 things i've noticed:

1. the keyboard shortcut ctrl + # for spaces doesn't always work for me, it only works after i've done ctrl + arrow key to move to a different space and then move back

2. with an active application window open, holding alt/opt and then clicking on a different application or finder will auto-hide the previous active application. for example if i have a chrome window open and i hold alt/opt and click my desktop, the chrome window automatically hides. is this a feature?

Since I cannot find any other complaints about this one, perhaps it's a problem with some system or user setting(s) on my machine...

My everyday account is a standard user. So if I run repair disk in Disk Utility, I am prompted to authenticate with an administrator's account. So far I have only noticed this issue in Disk Utility: the authentication window is very laggy. If I type my username <tab> password <enter> it will take a minute or so for this info to be entered.

If anyone knows of this issue / how to fix, please advise.

I'm finding that MouseZoom doesn't work well with Lion. This preference pane hasn't been updated in a long time but now it seems Lion doesn't work well with it.

I'll miss MouseZoom as it was a good way of making the Magic Mouse track faster (and better IMO). If anyone is aware of a good way to increase tracking speed in Lion with Magic Mouse, let us know.

  • In Finder, click on View > Show Path Bar.
  • Full path of folder will appear on bottom of Finder window. Clicking on any name in the shown path will immediately take you to that folder.
  • Now, go to any folder and move all the contents out to another location such as your desktop.
  • The path will disappear completely, losing the ability to traverse through the folders like you did in step 2.
