What to expect from OS X 10.9?

We're very close to the WWDC; what to expect from OS X 10.9? I hope in:
- New design, more flat, like iOS 7
- New functions for Finder
- New Power User features

But I also hope that Apple won't add more iOS apps to OS X. I hate OS X "iOSization".

I would like to see:

  • Linen removed.
  • Textures gone from Calendar, Contacts, etc.
  • Mission Control removed, Exposé & Spaces back.
  • The rest of Aqua gone.
  • A new 2D Dock option.

I love the linen background.
I updated to OS X Lion one week ago. Got it for free when I purchased my MacBook Pro but I fall in love with Snow Leopard ;) and performance wise it's still the best BUT if you got used to Mission Control your workflow gets faster compared to the old Expose (I can't believe that this is me saying this ;)).

Don't get me wrong, I love 10.6 and never planned to updated, the simplicity is unbelievable, my CPU worked always around 36°C, +100 days of uptime and so on, but Mission Control and Lion have their pros, too.

Changing full screen apps in full screen mode or in the MC "window" itself is great... back to the topic my wishes for 10.9:

- much more capabilities for the trackpad (this is just the beginning. We got the trackpad in 2008 and serious multitouch gestures were introduced in Lion and refined in ML)
- great UI, streamlined across apps, designed in Dieter Rams spirit
- really no lags (comparable with 10.6)
- iOS games on Mac
- better Finder
- better memory management
- notification center works with 3rd party apps
- some kind of "study mode" were all unnecessary stuff is "at sleep" and your MacBook is therefore capable to run 8-9 hours
- choice between Expose/Spaces and Mission Control

- Give us an option for arrows for the scroll bars. It really helps when you don't have Multi Touch (like me), and Windows users like them as well.
- Reintroduce color elements in the OS. It has gotten quite grayish since Lion.
- Support the same Macs as Mountain Lion did (we can only hope ;) )

+1
I really miss Front Row. But Apple wants to sell Apple TVs so there is no room for Front Row - people could be crazy and buy a HDMI cable connect it with the (normal) TV and use Front Row - huh no revenue ;)

True.

Annoyingly though it was Front Row on my Mac Mini which made me decide to buy an Apple TV (Mac Mini for the bedroom & ATV in the living room), worked very well for me.

Gross. I honestly think it's the worse texture Apple has churned out and the grey is really depressing. That aside, what draws you to it?

First, the grey design is depressing, I agree. I think the grey should be combined with some color in a useful sense.
Color should not dominate the system. This is what I hate about MS Windows. It's too much color.
iTunes 11 is the right way I think, except that Apple should use another size for the fonts.

To the "linen case": I hate all the textures (iCal, Reminders, etc.) there are just two places where I can live with linen texture: Mission Control and Welcome Screen.
A one color background would be "too cold".

Agree that color shouldn't be overtop. Disagree about linen. I mean you must be nuts, that's where it's the worst, and NC of course as well. But i think you don't login much or use MC too often is that it?

Great discussion ;)
I use MC a lot. The linen background just fits greatly with my Natalie Portman wallpaper ;) Very cozy!

I agree, NC shouldn't be in linen!
But to be honest, I am on Lion since one week. I never planned to update from OS X 10.6 in the near future and I hate all the textures except for MC and log in.

Ah, give it a year and you might hate it. Oh sure you get used it, that's easy, but with time you might realize how bad it looks.

I'm really forcing my opinion down your gullet ain't i :D But then again i might not have to worry. Jony Ive is set to change 10.9 on top of iOS, and when he sees (or hopefully already saw and changed) the horrific linen, colorless icons, and skeuomorphic mess he will set it straight.

According to rumors OSXs design will stay mostly the same with a few tweaks.

I suspect that the newer iOS apps that have made their way in to OS X will get reworked to match the changes in iOS 7. Notes for instance is rumoured to have a new B&W design in iOS 7. That change will probably flow through to 10.9.

Although I still cant figure out why anyone would use Notes over the default TextEdit on an OS X device.

No problem, I am the same kind of person. My Windows friends (and that's the majority, I am the only one with a Mac) hate me for my strong opinions.

I am also looking forward to 10.9. Bauhaus as well as Dieter Rams have a great influence on my way of thinking regarding design and aethetics. I am curious what's on Jony's mind for OS X (most of his working hours sadly will be for iOS).

Some days ago I saw a video with Rams (recorded around 2012) where he said that he had visited Ive's design studio. I really appreciate this kind of openness (by Ive). If you study Rams' work you see that it is still modern (except for the product itself, but the appearance) and I hope that this design without expiration date will find its way into OS X.
It's not quite often that a younger generation seriously searches for inspiration in the past.
What I like about Ive is, that he found the right heros. If you listen to Walter Gropius (Bauhaus) or Rams you notice that they sound really modern.

What I wanted to say ... and I get the sense that I am really off-topic regarding my lines above ... I think design-sense is a discipline like Zen or the hearing for great music that someone can practice and also has to (there is accounting for taste).

Maybe "Linen" is a slip-up by my side and I don't get something right in my otherwise strict asthetics mind ;)
I liked all the OS X Versions (I am on board since 10.4) but I think it is time for a timeless masterpiece.

I hope that Ive's influence isn't limited on the appearance of OS X but also the functionality.

I want to end my dispensable post with a quote of Rams:
"I never use this term ... form follows function ... functionality that is ok"

So perfect aesthetics and functionality for OS X ;)

Or how about an update to Mountain Lion?

I don't think that we have enough ideas for features to call it an entire new operating system now, however I do think that if Apple were to put in a few more updates to Mac OS X Mountain Lion that they could get some ridiculously cool features. I don't think we need so much new operating systems because the only purpose they serve is so the last one can say our apps aren't compatible with the old one and that we should upgrade for the small price of $##.## or buy a whole new laptop.

I use the notes app on the mac because if I type something on it I know it will also be on my iphone/ipad

I'd like to see:
• Random textures in iCal, Adressbook, etc. gone.
• Stable networking code for file transfers in Finder.
• A more stable Finder that doesn't beach ball all the time.
• Find your Friends and Messages on iCloud.com.
• iWork document editing on iCloud.com.
• Vertical bookmarks list for Safari (Like Firefox).
• Wake on LAN that actually works.
• The ability to wake my Mac mini with my Apple remote.

Note that I assume Apple follows the normal pattern of updating software with the OS itself.

A revised list of what I want:

1) Customizability across finder (Colors and more theme options)
2) More customizable dock
3) iWork should be improved across the board. (iWork editing, more Office compatibility, maybe a 'store' of templates for each one)
4) iBooks to OS X.
5) Better Java support (I just find it annoying how easy it is to use Java on Windows and OS X makes it much more complex...for me at least)
6) Ability to use arrows for scrolling (Like Windows)
7) Native Paint program would be nice.
8) Have Safari use iCloud to provide syncing like Chrome does.
9) Apple Maps
10) Siri
11) Clock - Let's see some alarm/stop watch syncing with iCloud
12) Tabbed Finder
13) KEEP the linen but let us color customize it.
14) Add things like fonts, cursors, etc. to Mac App Store (Rename Mac App Store to Mac Store)
15) "iOS Mode" Pretty much a built in iOS emulator to use apps that approve Mac use.
