Tiger, Panther and Leopard are all german tanks. I think Apple should explore the cannon theme a bit more before moving on: OS X Howitzer

But they never listen to me...

OSX Oppenheimer? gives new meaning to Steve's "Booms".

I'm kinda hoping the next MacBook will have an iMac style border. I'm sure I'm probably alone but I think it looks very nice with the aluminium...

I'd vote for no border. The bezel on any laptop should never be greater than what we already have - like the 1/2" bezel on my MBP.

I was in the elevator heading to my proctologist appointment and low and behold Steve was in the elevator and he was using the new iPhone-could you believe it. I was soo excited. :p I said "hey" and gave a heads up with my head trying to look cool but not too cool. He said "Don't talk to me" and I said "okay", but responded with "your still talking to me me" at which time I said "sorry". He replied "your still talking to me" and I said "No I'm not". He said "yes, you are" and apologetically, I said "sorry". It was very awkward, but I was still excited. Well anyways, I figured my proctologist appointment could wait because hell, my problems weren't going anywhere (if you know what I mean  ). So Steve exited on the 4th floor and I secretly followed him. He had no clue I was following him and I think thought the peculiar odor emanating from me was just from the waxing of the floors. :D He went through a nondescript door labeled "Room 4-A" and deposited the iPhone test model in a box. After he left I entered and quickly whipped out my iphone version 1.0 . I had jailbroken my iPhone using ziphone so I had to do a hard rest before I could get the camera to work properly, but once I did, I took a quick photo of the bin. Unfortunately I set off an alarm  and from out of nowhere all these cheap phones were dumped on top of it. - but I SWEAR its in there. Maybe someone could enlarge the picture and post it so we can look for it. Also I swear I saw a G5 macbook air and a 24" newton code-named "24 Newton".

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a post. Kudos for a great (AND TRUE!) story.

OSX future names

The question is: How far do they take the big cats? How far do they take Leopard?

Well they must be close to running out of big cat names... they've done Leopard, Tiger, Jaguar, etc - that just leaves them with Cougar and Puma, unless they want to go down the route of Lynx, Serval, Ocelot, and eventually, Tabby....

i see lots of marketing potential in this...

"Shoot to the future. Faster. Stronger. OS X Howitzer :apple:"

I LIKE!!;)

I'd vote for no border. The bezel on any laptop should never be greater than what we already have - like the 1/2" bezel on my MBP.

The current MacBook bezel is pretty thick, so it wouldn't have to be any bigger to accommodate such a border. I suspect we'll not see one though, the iMac may have been a bit of an anomaly.

@br0adband:
OK OK, maybe I didn't put that very well . But the point was that I do know that's what one does with a phone, which is why I have a £20 phone which will not be a major catastrophe to annihilate. I won't get an iPhone as I'd much rather have several cheaper specialized things that are better at their jobs (or as good as they can be, when it comes to standard telephony), than one converged expensive device. Which is also why I don't understand a desire for high-res cameras on phones. If you want to take decent pictures, get a decent camera.

Not that I don't think they're awesome technologically: I do :).

On the OS branding thing, I think that "Snow Leopard" is pretty cool, so maybe they'll do some variants on that. "Clouded Leopard" for instance, could possibly indicate a stronger relation with online services, which seems on the cards with the whole me.com thing.

lol, thanks, glad you liked it. I would laugh so hard if someone was ACTUALLY trying to pass that off for real...hah. I will try and make the image my avatar. My image editing skills are bad, though, so the avatar might make you laugh even more. :p

Edit: the new avatar has been resized and uploaded. Not as good as the full size but still pretty funny (and sad). Should pop up by evening's end!

Hey! I took that photo!

If you really want to fan the flames of the rumor mill, don't you think it's suspicious that the iPhone blocks out the name of the machine it's in front of?
On a more serious note, whilst the bottom of the Bezel is wider than the sides on the Air, there is a much more glaring difference, and that it the thickness of the front edge of the machine. I'm sat typing this on my MBA, and there is no way the front edge is anywhere near as wide as that on the poster. Added to that is the dimensions of the IR sensor on the right hand front edge: On the MBA it's much thinner, wider and further to the left than the one on the photo.

I've attached a couple of images to illustrate what I mean:
The first one is from the poster, the second one is an MBA from Apple's site. It could be perspective, but there's quite a difference...

woah. I was skeptical before, but I think you might be onto something. Oh well, I don't really care since I'm not in the market for a computer. I'm more interested in hearing something about 10.6 (or whatever it's going to be)

...and this unnecessary Widget stuff.

I don't see how widgets are unnecessary. For you they might be, which if fine, but for the rest of us that develop widgets and use them on a daily basis, these things are useful. Especially Web Clip widgets.

I'm still on Tiger, as I don't see any reason to 'upgrade' to Leo. But I fear that Leo will still rather feel like the same OS X I'm used to for years. It will still suck on mixed networks, still be first really usable with the .4 release (sorry, Tiger was quite solid on 10.4.2, so Leo still has some catching up to do). It will give me some irrelevant crap features I don't need (e.g. Stacks, Spaces, Time Machine, reflective dock) but my Safari will be snappier. But it is no major leap. At least that's my opinion after spending some hours with it on a work machine.

I don't want to assume that you haven't used Leopard, as I'm sure you have, however, if you're using Tiger then you're not using Leopard on a daily basis, or especially in a productive environment (or maybe you are, which would fully justify your opinion).

Either way, I use a Mac Pro at work on a mixed OS X and Windows network and both work hand-in-hand without any hitches. Stacks, for me, is invaluable. It really is. Especially when I'm working on about five or six different projects at once. Time Machine is fantastic. I can't express that enough. Regarding the Dock, I quite like it. I don't hate it but when I'm working, I have the dock set to Hide, so it makes no difference.

Great post overall, but I just wanted to add my two cents! :)

To put folks at ease on this Stevenote eve.
Apple NEVER puts an unannounced product on a banner for people to see.IF.

IF. there is a new product or piece of software on a banner it is always covered in black.

They may put little hints in but there sure don't post a picture or drawing of it anywhere for any eye to see.

I have to bite my tongue and remind myself that not everyone lives here in San Francisco, and doesn't know the lay out of Moscone West convention center (where the event will be held).
This is a building with a 3 story lobby, with full glass windows wrapping around it. Windows that allow FULL and CLEAR view of these banners.
Folks, stop wasting your time trying to read ANYTHING into these banners!
We all know Apple isn't going to leak anything via these banners, more so since they've been up since yesterday in FULL and CLEAR view of anyone walking down the street and happens to turn their head and look inside the lobby.

Just hold your breaths and wait till Monday when we'll finally hear what Steveo has to say for himself and we can then all jump onto the Apple Store website or go stand in line at the Apple store and plunk down our credit cards for whatever it is thats shiny and new that we couldn't live without on Sunday night.

And yes... if it's a new iPhone I'll be in line, as my housemate wants her first iPhone and seems as good a time as any.

Thank you for this, there are still sane people on this site :)

Guess we all just have to wait an see... this really is the calm before the storm now :)

Time Machine is fantastic. I can't express that enough.

I made my own Time Machine with rsync and launchd scripts and a lot of manual tweaking and time spent monitoring, double-checking and making sure everything was working like it should be. Then Leopard came out, and the solution was so simple! And now that my Airport Disk can be used for Time Machine, I'm a very happy camper. Three computers in the house backed up to 2 external hard drives, every hour, wirelessly! With nearly NO EFFORT on my part. Simply the most amazing feature to happen to any operating system in a long time.

Question:

Why does steve wear the SAME shirt in all the keynotes?? its also a really weird shirt
