Sorry, I don't get the "in the elevator" thing, is it some joke about something that happened in the past?

Sorry, I don't get the "in the elevator" thing, is it some joke about something that happened in the past?

Yes. Back when ever spy shot was taken in an elevator, looking into an elevator, or near one.

There was one way back when for the iMac G5. It was basically some d0ucheb*g with a big square box in an elevator.

I'm kinda hoping the next MacBook will have an iMac style border. I'm sure I'm probably alone but I think it looks very nice with the aluminium...

It does, and a few of the good mockups tickle the imagination, but Apple's design team always knocks our socks off. I remember the thousands of iPhone mockups that were around for YEARS... and when we finally get it it's nothing we ever expected.... to bad the hardware inside leaves many people wanting.

I think the first elevator pic was of the "iHome" box in the corner.

Apple has needed a serious competitor to Microsoft's Office paradigm. With iWork completely up to spec, all that's left for Apple to convince people are Outlook and Exchange alternatives.

I originally thought that it was way too soon for us to be hearing anything about a new iWork, since '08 hasn't been out for very long, but all the speculation about a possible OS upgrade has me thinking otherwise since Leopard came out months after iWork '08.

Often times it's the little things that Apple announces that has a big impact, personally I would love (as I have anxiously hoped for the last two iWork releases) to see Apple get firmly behind the OpenDocument standard for its suite of programs so that iWork gains a TRUE place in a mixed platform environment. OpenDocument makes a lot of sense, because

1) Apple has a history of supporting open standards where it bolsters its business and reduces the complexity on their own developers,

2) it would be FAR easier for Apple to implement than native support for OOXML (heck, it's even easier for Microsoft to implement in their OWN product than OOXML),

3) No more dialogs asking, "Do you want to save this in iWork '06 format, iWork '08 format, iWork.... " What's good for one is good for everyone.

4) OpenDocument is extensible so they could... possibly... implement such features as Numbers' multi-table-on-a-single-sheet feature (not sure about the viability of this one), and

5) it will make Apple not look like they're drinking Microsoft's Kool-Aid, while, when native ODF support is added to MS Office next year, Apple will be totally compatible and competitive with not just most Windows users but Linux/open source advocates too.

Of course, the obvious argument against this is the tremendous effort that Apple has put into evolving its own XML document format.

Aaargh

Umm, look at all of Apple's own marketing and labeling. In fact, on your own computer (you are using a Mac, right?) look at your "About this Mac" dialog in the Apple Menu. What are you running? It says "Mac OS X" then underneath that "Version 10.5.3" or whatever version you're running. Look at the online Apple Store: Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.

Apple's clearly refuting your idea there.

jW

Excuse me, but it has to be said. If you want to talk about 'Apple refuting your idea!', then you should start to think what Apple really talks about.

First of all (you can check that in various Quicktime streams), his Jobsness himself always refers to "Mac Os TEN". He will start his keynote speech with several toutings of how "Mac Os TEN" developed to be the best OS in the world. There is noone on this whole side, who would talk about "Mac OS eks", so to say. Though "Mac OS Sex" would be a cool name ;)

The X itself is a marketing idea. Not that it's the Roman number, but it also perfectly represents the Unix foundation. In case you didn't know it, you have a fully mf fine X Server working on your Mac. You also have this creepy terminal, that uses..tadaaa...Unix talk, commands and ways of interacting.

Guess why many Linux freaks keep a Terminal in their OS X Dock.

And Leopard still is OS X in the core. It is an evolved kernel from Cheetah. I had the first OS X on a double boot iBook. Yes, we double booted and we used something creepy called Classic. And I can still clearly see a lot of similarities to 10.0.0, be it only the Menu Bar design.

I think we will see OS 11 rather sooner then later. It will again be built from ground up to fully leverage say 3D desktop and Multitouch capabilities (as you have to do some paradigm shifting, like we had with the jump from 9 to X).

But as long as we don't have a paradigm shift with major system parts, we will talk about Mac OS Ten.

Anyone thought of this? The iPhone SDK comes with an iPhone Simulator. Now, if I remember correctly, it is actually running iPhone OS X for Intel, it does not emulate an ARM processor. That means they already have iPhone OS X for Intel and ARM. That means Cocoa Touch is ARM and Intel, and that means that we have more options as far as hardware.

Didn't think of that. Good catch

When did I ever refer to the pronounciation? I always say the "ten", not "ecks". Don't worry, I won't commit that grievous sin.

What I was referring to, which you don't disagree with it seems but the person I was responding to did, is that Mac OS X is a product name, not a version number. I think this is fairly apparent, as otherwise we would be using OS XVI or 16 by now. I don't expect to see OS 11 for another 15 years or so, just going by Steve's statements, because there's no need. We're not just talking paradigm shift, Mac OS X would have to lose it's UNIX underpinnings to no longer be considered Mac OS X and move to OS 11 or something else. That's not going to happen until something better comes along, and there's no sign of any such thing on the horizon.

EDIT: Oh, and btw, I'm a Unix geek, and use the Terminal many times in an average day. Please try not to sound so condescending.

Something worth remembering:
back in 2005 (at WWDC) SJ was discussing Transitions. Particularly, he was talking about the PPC --> Intel transition. He said that we made a new transition at the beginning of the millennium w/ OS 9 --> OS X. He also said (and I quote) "OS X has set up Apple for the next 20 years" - so there are many more versions of OS X to go. (just something interesting I thought I'd draw attention to because a lot of people are mentioning OS 11).

Didn't Jobs also say that Leopard set up the next OS X releases for the next 10 years.

Thanks to all the people explaining the lift thing to me :D

You're welcome. Now go out there and debunk the crazy fanboy speculators with crappy lowrez images of bad mockups plastered to an elevator. :D

Crunchgear has posted the first banners at WWDC which promote both "OS X Leopard" and "OS X iPhone". The "OS X Leopard" banner reads "The world's most advanced operating system," while the "OS X iPhone" banner reads "The world's most advanced mobile platform."

Beautifully designed banners there, I must say. It's going to be such a great week next week for OS X iPhone & Leopard. I'm really looking forward to it.

Sorry, I didn't want to sound rude or anything like that. Well, we disagree nevertheless to some extent.

First of all, and that is your point taken, OS X is somehow a product name. It sure is.

Nevertheless I have to stress that there are no real changes in OS X thus far, that I would consider worthy to call a version upgrade. To put it in a not so great analogy, Leopard to me is OS X SP4. ;)

10.0 was more or less still public beta or RC, 10.1 (Gold Master) introduced those nice UI bezels we like so much. 10.2 (aka OS X SP1) was the first usable OS X in my eyes, and the first time since 9 that we had spring-loaded folders *sigh*. We had to wait for 10.3 (OS X SP 2 respectively) to have Labels (though Exposé was nice), and finally in 10.4 (OS X SP 3) we have Desktop search and this unnecessary Widget stuff.

I'm still on Tiger, as I don't see any reason to 'upgrade' to Leo. But I fear that Leo will still rather feel like the same OS X I'm used to for years. It will still suck on mixed networks, still be first really usable with the .4 release (sorry, Tiger was quite solid on 10.4.2, so Leo still has some catching up to do). It will give me some irrelevant crap features I don't need (e.g. Stacks, Spaces, Time Machine, reflective dock) but my Safari will be snappier. But it is no major leap. At least that's my opinion after spending some hours with it on a work machine.

That's all I'm trying to say.

And I think the next paradigm shift is not too far away. I'd guess there will be no 10.8, and 10.7 will only happen, if 10.6 will still support PPC.

OS X versions

I agree with swagi in that I don't see a huge shift between the flavours of OS X over the last few years that would warrant a re-classifying. We've still got the whole Unix base and micro-kernel style operating system now as we did with Cheetah, but Apple has been steadily building its core functions on to that stable base. Things haven't really changed, they've just been improved upon and new things added with the releases. And I always say OS Ex Leopard, as I think that's cooler.

Also not being a big fan of widgets I didn't bother upgrading to Tiger on my ancient Tibook (God rest its soul), but I think you're wrong, swagi, not to jump on Leopard, if only for Spaces. Whenever my Linuxy friends showed me their boxes before the only thing that really got me a bit envious was the different desktops, and it is so convenient not to have to rearrange all your windows all the time. I'm a physics student and being able to dedicate an area to research and notes and problem sheets for each of electromagnetism, quantum, thermodynamics etc. whilst having iTunes open, and Safari on macrumors :), and email and calendars in another is just such a wonderful use of technology that it makes me all goose-pimply just thinking about it. How can you be happy with less? Quick-look as well is worth it I would have said. When I find myself on a windows pc I have to force myself not to hit the spacebar all the time.

I feel inclined to ask why you think Leopard is unusable? If you mean unstable, I'm not sure where you get that from as the two kernel panics in 9 months I've had (neither on 10.5.3) were from freeware games I had downloaded before I installed Leopard, whilst I was (typically) running a bunch of other stuff. And I thought that was pretty understandable. (Although when it did finally go it went with a vengeance... it was quite exciting considering its rarity!) Also I've had no problems networking on my college network... I'm no expert on this but I think that networking in Leopard is supposed to be vastly improved from that in Tiger. It certainly seems pretty easy... and certainly much easier than on a PC. I still don't have a clue about that.

Sorry to bang on about it. Very excited about Monday, though, although I'll not be getting iPhone 2.0 because of the risk: I'd have to carry it around with me (and no doubt drop/tread on/run over) all the time.

Next paradigm shift not too far away? Let's hope so... although in my opinion it's going to be much harder to make it significantly better now. I really think Leopard has pretty much everything going for it.

OK maybe not everything. But a heck of a lot.

I have to ask this, so forgive me, but:

You do realize it's a cellular phone, first and foremost, right? And that's what people do with cellular phones these days, they take 'em with 'em as leaving it someplace makes it really hard to answer a phone call without the cellular phone? :D

Just poking fun at your statement, I can understand why some people would be hesitant to own one and take that "risk"...

I agree with you. I think Apple could easily change the meaning of the X without anyone really even noticing (or caring). I don't think there is a better name for it than OS X.

The question is: How far do they take the big cats? How far do they take Leopard?

I think the best transition from cats would be to follow up Leopard with Leo which can be a cat but can also be a constellation or a sign of the zodiac.

OS X Leo could then be followed by OS X Orion, OS X Pegasus, etc...

That said, we are on the verge of a major paradigm shift that can justify the switch from OS X or at least from cat names: Touch technology.

Designing an OS from the ground up to use touch as the main form of navigation is a major shift – enough to justify moving to OS X {insert new naming scheme here}.

I was in the elevator heading to my proctologist appointment and low and behold Steve was in the elevator and he was using the new iPhone-could you believe it. I was soo excited. :p I said "hey" and gave a heads up with my head trying to look cool but not too cool. He said "Don't talk to me" and I said "okay", but responded with "your still talking to me me" at which time I said "sorry". He replied "your still talking to me" and I said "No I'm not". He said "yes, you are" and apologetically, I said "sorry". It was very awkward, but I was still excited. Well anyways, I figured my proctologist appointment could wait because hell, my problems weren't going anywhere (if you know what I mean  ). So Steve exited on the 4th floor and I secretly followed him. He had no clue I was following him and I think thought the peculiar odor emanating from me was just from the waxing of the floors. :D He went through a nondescript door labeled "Room 4-A" and deposited the iPhone test model in a box. After he left I entered and quickly whipped out my iphone version 1.0 . I had jailbroken my iPhone using ziphone so I had to do a hard rest before I could get the camera to work properly, but once I did, I took a quick photo of the bin. Unfortunately I set off an alarm  and from out of nowhere all these cheap phones were dumped on top of it. - but I SWEAR its in there. Maybe someone could enlarge the picture and post it so we can look for it. Also I swear I saw a G5 macbook air and a 24" newton code-named "24 Newton".

lol, digital skunk, I hope you know I was joking...right? Haha. I didn't even use Photo Shop. I put this together in Print Shop in under a minute. It's so bad that it's funny. If you search the forums a bit, I did a similar thing with the same elevator pic but for the at the time unannounced MBA. :p

Yeah I know, and that's why it's so DAMN funny. Every time I look at it I bust out laughing and crying.... EVERY TIME man....

The best freaking images posted on MR ever.... you should get an award under your avatar for that. :D

Agreed, OS 11 sounds wrong...but maybe because we're not used to it. They could of course come up with another name, who knows? But eventually they'll run out of cat names. One thing forsure: their marketing team is brilliant, and they'll come up with something that we will like.

lol, thanks, glad you liked it. I would laugh so hard if someone was ACTUALLY trying to pass that off for real...hah. I will try and make the image my avatar. My image editing skills are bad, though, so the avatar might make you laugh even more. :p

Edit: the new avatar has been resized and uploaded. Not as good as the full size but still pretty funny (and sad). Should pop up by evening's end!

Tiger, Panther and Leopard are all german tanks. I think Apple should explore the cannon theme a bit more before moving on: OS X Howitzer

But they never listen to me...
