Its good that release days is getting closer for the iPhone 4S, 5 or whatever it's moniker will be. Of greater importance is getting it released so the iPhone6 can be the focus. By many of the present indicators this version about to be released will be a placeholder model.

It's the next version that should be Apples best. This is the truly good news too since those who want to pass on this one won't miss much. It only gets better at that point since slightly reduced demand will allow those who need (not just want) a new iPhone will be able to find them in stock right away. It will also give Apple time to celebrate it's apparent victory.

Tuesday, still seems like a great day for Lion. Launch it along side a normal update of the store (as Tuesday is on both iOS and Mac OS X).

The Wednesday thing could be plausible, and would follow the line of "20ths release".

The industry, however, has all agreed this week seems most likely, including All Things Digital (who has Walt Who is closely tied with Apple.)

I'm going to boot my Podcast of Apple Press Releases and watch two Lion announcements (preview [aka. Back To The Mac] and WWDC 2011).

Did I miss the news of Elizabeth's passing?

I'm glad I got a warning for responding to your post; at least someone read it! :p

While I do love the debate, I truly wonder about my dear Macrumors when the breath of the argument obviously boils down to semantics and linguistics. Yet I'm terribly sorry for the offense- I stand true to the point that it is with great lengths one must argue the contrary of our beloved company's actions- but having overstepped my bounds on defending a slanted assault in a personal manner is discouraging.

2nd largest market capitalization must afford them at least the payroll for people to think through the repercussions of their actions, and I would think this matter would be no different. My only wish was to bring perspective to an otherwise dull topic; Lion will be released by the end of the month, who cares if they install it at their stores with DVDs or floppies! Obviously someone does...

Oooh, so much to discuss!

You get OS X Lion free with the dev program anyway. How could you not know this?

I thought it might expire after the final release and make me buy a normal copy - do I really get to keep it? Ace!

I have never in all my 37 years called a "Bin" a "Wastebasket". This isn't the 30's...lol

Ditto

I'd still prefer if they had a UK version of Mac OS with "Wastebasket" instead of "Trash" etc like they used to pre OS9

I'd be happy if they just buy up macrumours.com and set up a redirect, cos I keep typing that by accident(ly spelling it correctly :p).

I love OSX.

In my humble opinion: Lion is Apples Vista.

I have installed it on many machines. All have problem.

Lion is awesome, and Vista wasn't that bad. Provided you bought some new hardware. And come on, everyone loves an excuse to buy a new graphics card! :D

My life is genuinely dull right now so Lion being released will make my day, whatever day it gets released!

Just for the record, I am English but I do prefer American spelling/grammar... it just works :) Except for terms like "y'all" and "my bad", which are truly awful!

Why don't we just take out the "D" and the 2nd "E" from Wednesday whilst we're at it. "Wensday" seems OK to me.

Us British folk should be the ones that moan about your spellings with things like "Windows Media Center" when it should be "Centre". Also, why do I have to move things to the "Trash". What's that? Just say "Bin", it's shorter anyway.

So... an extra "U" in some words is nothing and i'm sure you can handle it ;)

Just realised iTunes changed "Movies" and "TV Shows" to "Films" and "TV Programmes" so proper English doesn't seem to be completely dying :D

<checks iTunes on iPhone> Oooh, so they have! Nifty!

On this whole spelling thing:

  • Regarding centre/center, I'm inclined to take the American side over the French side on this one, you pronounce it more like Cider than Cidre don't you?

  • Regarding the missing Us - the stupid thing is it doesn't make it any more phonetic! Color? The first 'o' should be a 'u', for a start, and it doesn't end in an 'or' sound, it ends in a 'er' (or 're', if you prefer :p) sound! If you're going to spell it wrong do it for a reason, but that's a crap one. If you don't like colour use kuller or something, but color makes no sense at all.

People do have internet on their phones you know....
Yeah, but if you read this forum on an iPhone you get about five posts per page, it's very annoying!

This is not a knock on Windows 7.

Beyond a few subtle visual variations, I have a hard time differentiating Windows Vista from Windows 7.

But, I never had to deal with Vista when it was first released.

I've been saying this for months.

Well I said it a couple of years ago. But would anybody listen?

I myself am an American whose ancestors were English, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Romanian, and a bunch of other things the farther back you go.

No need to tell us you're American: the simple fact that you know and talk about your ancestry like that tells us all we need to know:)

I had Vista on a new laptop from day one. It was goddam awful. Never got to service pack 2. Only made it to SP1. Got the iMac long before that :)

You can change a setting to include much more than 5 posts per page...

You can also change the url to view the full "desktop" version on the iPhone.

Go to the front page.
Click on "Forum
Click on "Forums"
Click on the url bar. Remove the "/wap/BrowseForum.php" bit from the url and click "Go"

Now you have the desktop version of the forum on your iphone

You're right - Windows 7 is just a polished, tuned Vista.

Vista on a powerful machine was fine - but Windows 7 uses much less resources and performs better on average machines.

Add to that the fact that systems today are typically much more powerful (more cores, more memory, better graphics) than they were when Vista launched.

That was the problem with Vista (aside from the local copying bug that made it take ages to copy a file on release). It was Microsoft's "Vista Ready" vs "Vista Capable" sticker program, were "Vista Capable" was applied to computers that couldn't run Vista's enhanced Aero GUI (because of incidentally, the crap Intel GPU shipped at that time... that company needs to wake up and buy a GPU clue).

This totally ruined the experience for a lot of users which in turn hurt the reputation of Vista and built this whole "Microsoft's Vista" debacle. It wasn't the fact that Vista had anything wrong with it in particular (it was a big change in a lot of areas which Windows 7 has basically kept around) but that it didn't run properly on people's machines even though they were "Vista Capable".

If Microsoft had simply made the requirements higher, they could have prevented this whole thing.

Most of the changes were from Vista to Win 7 were actually quite subtle, but made a huge difference to the "user experience".

For example one of the major complaints was how long it took Vista to start up from the login screen until it was ready to use. They changed the timing when some of the services would start (for example the indexing service used to try and start when the user logged in; it now starts later)

I´m shure they are right

They did not specific witch wednesday, so to be on the safe side lets say wednesday +- 3 days :)

I disagree. The whole Vista printer driver thing was a complete cluster. The fact that the early Vista adopters couldn't print to current model printers should be a case study for all future OS releases to examine.

That said, Vista (and Windows 7) fixed a lot of goofy crap from XP and prior that, frankly, needed to be fixed for the future of Windows. Even minor stuff like putting spaces in the names of important directories or having separate (x86) directories on 64-bit installations. Who knows, maybe they'll get the 64-bit vs. 32-bit versions squared away by Windows 8...
