I've been waiting for the new MBA to make the jump to Mac for the first time. For those of you familiar with past hardware launches, is it true that it is normally just the base model and max model available in stores? I'm heading back to grad school and looking to get the fully loaded model, hopefully that includes 8gb of RAM. Just trying to determine if I should drive the 90 minutes to the nearest store first thing tomorrow.

Conversely, if ordering an upgraded model like that from the website at launch, what is the usual launch day (assuming I order fairly quickly after it comes available) turnaround for delivery? I know for iphones and ipads it can quickly jump to weeks, but from what I've read with computers it's usually a pretty deep stock up front. Thanks for any past experiences --

My experience with the local Apple store is that they don't have stock to sell for a couple of days after release. Maybe the store is at the far end of the distribution pipeline. Maybe there is a line when the store opens and all their stock is gone immediately. I don't know.

Can anyone else comment on this? My closest Apple store is 1.5 hours away and I don't want to drive there tomorrow morning to find out they are out of stock right away.

Exactly as predicted by me they announced the release of Lion and MacBook Air during the first couple of minutes of the conference call.

Rocketman

There was no mention of Macbook Airs being released either Wed or any other day.

My guess, either Fri the 22nd or Fri the 29th. We'll see...

CoM reports a rumour of the new Air specs, starting at 64GB flash and 2GB RAM. That would be so laaaaaaaaaaaaame. I could be happy for it since I bought a 2011 MBP though.

I think the waiting is nearly over, stores are down. Exactly as planned, Lion is said to be released at 08.30 AM Eastern time, 13.30 hours for our European friends... Let's wait and see. F5 is going to get it now!:)

1hr to go now...

Check my previous post to see what time the Lion will roar in your city/country.
