No kidding ....

I mean, Vista took 2x the amount of disk space for an installation as Windows 7 did, despite 7 having more features than Vista built into it! It was also considerably slower booting up/shutting down, and lagged in intensive disk I/O operations.

Are we *really* saying Lion is going to use up 2x the drive space of Snow Leopard while offering fewer features? Are we expecting laggy disk I/O performance and far slower boot/shutdown times than Snow Leopard? I think NOT on all counts!

If you think that Lion is to Snow Leopard as Vista was to XP, you have obviously not tried the Lion GM. Why do you bother to demonstrate such blatant ignorance?

My life is genuinely dull right now so Lion being released will make my day, whatever day it gets released!

Just for the record, I am English but I do prefer American spelling/grammar... it just works :) Except for terms like "y'all" and "my bad", which are truly awful!

It's not coming out until Friday...

With all due respect to the source, Apple has consistently released every version of OS X since Panther (10.3 in 2003) on a Friday. You can see for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#Versions

Since Apple is incredibly meticulous about their rituals, it seems unlikely that they would change the trend now. My best guess is that it will come out on July 22.

I mentioned this to MacRumors on Twitter and their response was that since this was a digital release, all bets were off. Hmmm... Perhaps, but still unlikely.

We've been reading about reliable sources for weeks now. Just stick to Apple's typical pattern and you'll stand a much better chance at pinning the release date of Lion.

LOL I think there are far worse words than those.

I'm struggling to find just one feature in Lion that will actually convince me to buy it. I looked at the features list, but I don't think anything they have added will really be of benefit to what I use my computer for.

What features are making you guys want Lion?

wedneday 8:30 corresponds withe the date/time Nostradamus has predicted for this OS release.

well done, source!

Hmm. doubt it. Would Apple do an announcement some time before the release. Or will they just from one moment to another become available on their website?

Well they already "announced" a July timeframe, so given the online distribution method, it will probably just appear on the App Store and apple.com front page one day.

Apple doesn't really do "coming in 7 days" sort of things.

ok I'll take the bait:

Mainly for me its the integrated gestures, and not only the ones that Apple showed off in their keynotes. There are new API's etc. that allow for better integration of gesture-based interaction.

Alot of people are overlooking the obvious features apple pointed out but as a few devs and they will tell how Lion will make a much better computing experience.

Wait and see the Lion optimized applications that come out further down the road

I'm not sure whether I like the sound of the new features or not but Lion is only going to cost me £14 after getting some iTunes gift cards with 33% off, so it's not a massive risk. :)

As someone has already stated, this seems like an update focusing on improving rather than innovating. Based on that alone, at $30 for (what I hope will amount to) even a few new ease-of-use features, more system stability, speed, aesthetic improvements - it's not about what features are making me want Lion - it's whether I have any deterrent whatsoever not to update.

In addition, a list of features which I would value at $30 straight away:
-resize windows from any edge
-auto-save (for Apps using the feature)
-dictionary integration
-system resume on restart
-print Office documents from Preview
-momentum scrolling
-auto setup for Gmail through Mail
-Server included
-new iCal
-new Mail

Apple normally announces new products at public events. Gee, I wonder if they will announce the shipping of MacBook Air, Mac-Mini, and Lion at the 2pm conference call tomorrow?

Rocketman

There are no unannounced new products coming out. There are only upgrades to existing products and one already announced new product. Conference calls are to announce quarterly financial results like every other major company does.

I understand your sentiments. I usually skip every few versions of OS X too. But hey, it's $30. I've shelled out $10 in the App store to buy programs I end up using for just a few weeks. And for $20 more, you get a whole system update.

If you compare it to what we spend on other things, it's really nothing at all. But if none of the new features affect you personally, I say do without it. No matter what version of OS X you're running, it's still an amazing OS. :)

My feelings are mixed on Lion. I am looking forward to the new full screen apps feature for my laptop, but am disappointed that it disables other screens (My iMac also has an external monitor). For that, I can just maximize the windows manually as I currently do, but seems like an oversight on the developer's part to not make use of secondary screens.

Autosave/versions could be very cool if implemented correctly (as I understand it is the application's responsibility to implement it).

There are a few other features I am looking for, mostly 'ease-of-use' additions. BTW, I downloaded a reverse scrolling app, and I got used to "pulling pages up and pushing them down" pretty quickly, just like an iphone.

Personally I'd tend to understand all this excitement if linked to hardware update, not really for a new OS, since I think everyone is pretty happy with SL.

While Wednesday would be fine and dandy and it would make sense, this rumor is filled with "the guys who know it all said this".

The last four operating systems by Apple were released at times like the 28th or 27th (the end of) the month. And every time it was a Friday.

I could see Apple going for the 22nd instead. Or even the 29th.

My hopes are on as soon as possible though!

Well, I don't take it personally that Lion doesn't appeal to you. But I really disagree :D I don't think Lion gets a fair shake.

People say that it doesn't do anything, but IMO it's completely rethinking/improving so many essential computing tasks:
-The previous paradigm of saving and changing files is completely thrown out
-Window management looks to be improved; Expose+Dashboard+Spaces are completely unified, finally
-Basic productivity apps (Mail, iCal, Address Book) get big improvements (e.g. Mail search tokens; iCal natural language event creation)
-practical multitouch gestures for navigating webpages, turning pages, zooming, turning, launching apps, etc.
-wireless file sharing, without needing a common Wi-Fi network, is dead simple and even a bit fun
-really easy disk encryption/wiping
-many little things like Resume, disappearing scroll bars, new foreign language voices, and general polish, Spotlight improvements, new ways to sort Finder, etc.

An awesome deal for $29. I can't find a single area of everyday computing that hasn't been improved.

Ugh... how much longer must I wait for a Mac Mini refresh!?

Oh well... it'll probably just be the i3/i5 stuff and an extra $100 added to the price tag. :(

I agree with the "digital=all bets off" sentiment.

Going by the reasoning that since they have regularly released on Friday so will always do so, you might think that since they have regularly release on optical media they will always do so.

There are many logistical factors in a physical, mailed release that may have influenced the decision to release on Friday, that probably aren't related to superstition or tradition. They may have very different factors to consider on such a large scale digital download release.

I was very happy with Jaguar, but if you offered me two copies of my old OS for one of my new one, I'd stick with my new one

I'm to lazy to go digging, so does anyone know off the top of your heads, what kind of under-the-hood improvements have been made? I'm actually more interested in those than the visual changes.

* Core improvements (Core Audio, Animation, etc.)
* Grand Central Station err I mean Grand Central Dispatch
* Open GL
* Kernal enhancements
* General speed, stability, security, networking, etc.
etc...

* Server enhancements ? I think server keeps getting forgotten in these discussions.

I can completely understand excitement for a new OS, but a $30 update? No.

I'll be buying a new Air. After testing out Lion, I'll see if I'll bother with the update for the rest of my household's Macs. If Lion was $120, there would be NO WAY I'd even consider updating to it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

A Best Buy employee told me that they have had a huge crate of new airs and minis for a little more than two weeks. He said they were supposed to release them on the 14th but an Apple rep called like the day before and told them to hold off til the 21st. I guess it could be sooner than that but the thing is Best Buy stores have definitely had them for awhile now. Updates will have to be loaded when the machines turn on for the first time. Oh and he also said the airs and minis will for sure for sure come out the same day.
I know right? MR seems to be just throwing up one guess after the other.

If they already have the supply, wouldn't that mean the new hardware won't have Lion pre-installed?

Doesn't make sense why they would hold it if that was the case
