I was very happy with Jaguar, but if you offered me two copies of my old OS for one of my new one, I'd stick with my new one

I was happy with Leopard, but bought SL for Lion now its essential to upgrade for that price

With all due respect to the source, Apple has consistently released every version of OS X since Panther (10.3 in 2003) on a Friday. You can see for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X#Versions

Since Apple is incredibly meticulous about their rituals, it seems unlikely that they would change the trend now. My best guess is that it will come out on July 22.

I mentioned this to MacRumors on Twitter and their response was that since this was a digital release, all bets were off. Hmmm... Perhaps, but still unlikely.

We've been reading about reliable sources for weeks now. Just stick to Apple's typical pattern and you'll stand a much better chance at pinning the release date of Lion.

This is the first time it's been released digitally, same rules don't apply this time.

The excitement's definitely growing!

By the way, what's with the extra "u", UK people?

flour...scour... these words can be pronounced (<- oops, there's another "ou") consistently.

As for the silent "u"... colour... rumour.. never served much purpose it seems... it's high time to drop the silent u.... unless that's how you folk pronounce it? :D:D

Why don't we just take out the "D" and the 2nd "E" from Wednesday whilst we're at it. "Wensday" seems OK to me.

Us British folk should be the ones that moan about your spellings with things like "Windows Media Center" when it should be "Centre". Also, why do I have to move things to the "Trash". What's that? Just say "Bin", it's shorter anyway.

So... an extra "U" in some words is nothing and i'm sure you can handle it ;)

Just realised iTunes changed "Movies" and "TV Shows" to "Films" and "TV Programmes" so proper English doesn't seem to be completely dying :D

The comments that this is the first digital only, non Apple Store release are very valid. The timing of a digital release matters a lot less than the timing of a store release. Furthermore, just because the last 4 releases happened on a Friday (the previous 3 did not) does not mean this one will. If that logic always held true, I'd have an iPhone 5 right now.

Lastly, for all we know, the rumors last week could have been correct and Apple was planning on delivering Lion, but for whatever reason, had to delay the release for a week.

If they already have the supply, wouldn't that mean the new hardware won't have Lion pre-installed?

Doesn't make sense why they would hold it if that was the case

Lion Gold Master has been out for a while now.

Whether the word is spelled (or spelt) rumors or rumours, this site is still called MACRUMORS.

Moving on.

I'm really torn about Lion. My 2006 Core Duo 2.16 MacBook Pro wont handle it, so SL for me there. My 2008 Mac Pro will support Lion, but my kid plays so many of my old PPC OS X games that I'd need to leave SL on a partition for him.

I'm usually a first in line sort fellow when it comes to OS upgrades, but I do not feel the need to upgrade right away this time.

I'm sure it will happen, but it may be a few weeks or months until I feel compelled.

8:30? Why not release it at midnight EST? That way, the hardcore folks can stay up late and get their downloads out of the way throughout the night, and the regular people can download it the following day. Otherwise, you're gonna have everybody trying to get this all at once, which is going to be painful.

My rough theory: Sometime between 6AM - 8AM US Eastern time is when every(?) time zone in the world is in the same day.

Edit: I'm not even sure if it makes sense! But definitely excited.

Tuesday

I would bet money it'll be tomorrow if next Tuesday just to prove everyone wrong. Product launches tended to be Tuesday (except when Monday is a national holiday - which it is not this week or next week). That is my $0.02 in the Macguessing arena. Granted, this might be different. But if I have to put Apple's behavioral track record to these (often wrong) informants I am gonna go with the former when pricing my probabilities.

Regardless of the Lion release day I'll get home from work at 5PM and the poor Apple distro servers will be so bogged down it will take all night to get it downloaded.

Not being funny here - genuinely interested...
What has been removed?

Last look, QTSS, MySQL, Print queues, AFP,SMB,NFS,FTP have been 'amalgamated' into the wonderful new Server app. I think Podcast Producer has survived the cut...

...and if you were thinking, "well at least they have kept OS X Server" Apple have just killed ACSA, so it's goodbye tech admins forever...

They don't give a **** about server anymore

I'm struggling to find just one feature in Lion that will actually convince me to buy it. I looked at the features list, but I don't think anything they have added will really be of benefit to what I use my computer for.

What features are making you guys want Lion?

Versions and auto save.
For obvious reasons

Improved drag and drop
So people I know with sight issues can use the OS better.

New look - Address Book
The SL version of it stinks. The Lion version should be better.

Widescreen layout - Mail
Should be much more user friendly

You must be new to Macs, then...Lion is BY FAR the most underwhelming OS X release in recent history - the only hoopla is about the "innovative" means of delivery (i.e., the AppStore), not the OS features themselves.

Beg to differ. Snow Leopard 10.6.0 was quite a dud as far as end user immediate features and eye candy goes. There was zero compelling reason to install it on release. 99% of the improvements were under the hood and many of the new background features were unusable because no s/w as yet was written to take advantage of them. At least Lion immediately offers the user new ways to use the Mac.

I think there will be a good chance at 2011. :)

That said, I have unencrypted my boot drives and repartitioned most of my computers to create space for the new OS. (I will do quite a bit of testing before I risk mission critical stuff on any new OS.)
