EXACTLY! Thank you so much for clarifying the
very question I have tried to get answered.

It *seems* the GM can be upgraded to the full
production release via software updates based upon
past GM releases (Snow Leopard) -- but nobody is
positively sure and nobody is quoting the exact
release notes that accompany this GM release.

I'm not sure why this issue has become so confused. Basically, the GM is released by Apple with the hope that it can be the final retail release. A brief period of testing follows it, and unless any glaring bugs are found, it becomes the version sold publicly. Naturally, if that happens, you'll be able to update to 10.7.1 and beyond with no problem whatsoever.

The only question mark, then, is whether or not this is the only GM release. If you assume it is, and that's a reasonable assumption, then you won't have a problem. Of course, no-one knows for sure at this point, so it's a gamble, albeit a minor one. Worst case scenario is you have to reinstall over the top of the previous GM, but after four developer previews you should be used to that by now, ha.

No. Go to Library or any folder with 50+ folders in it. Select all and open them all. Notice how much time it takes for all the windows to open and start displaying what's inside.

In Leopard this took approximately 2 seconds. In SL it took around 3-4 seconds.

In Lion it takes around 6-7 seconds. It's very much noticeable. My system isn't indexing and I'm using Radeon 5870.

Weird, I did exactly what you said in my Library folder, and the only additional "delay" compared to Snow Leopard was that the animations seemed a little more elaborate than I remember. A few extra seconds of animation maybe when you combined the animations of so many folders opening up. They didn't seem slow at all popping up, and they displayed what was inside after they all popped up. Unlike Snow Leopard though, Finder never froze after it finished opening all the folders while it tried to "catch up" and read all the data. It showed me the data immediately after they finished popping up. For me this is a win, they improved data reading speeds in Finder, so overall it is quicker even if the animations take a tiny bit longer.

I should have made it more specific. RAID0 is not supported. Mirror might be. I haven't tried. But RAID0 isn't supported, and Lion installer already warns you if you try to install to RAID0. So it's not about certain systems. The installer doesn't support it.

Fair enough, I haven't tested it myself so I am only going based on reports people are saying.

Well, I do switch between them quickly always, and the delay is very noticeable. It's nothing major though.

Weird, the only way I can switch that fast is if I hold down the arrow button and essentially blow past way too many images. When I go at a normal speed where I can actually view each image individually it doesn't have a delay.

When Finder can't resize a window, it's always noticeable. And Finder responds slow as well. I have a lot of response time related issues because I use my mouse extremely fast. When a folder window is opening, if I click somewhere else too fast, Lion registers that click as a resize click, i.e. it acts like I have clicked the window border and tried to resize it, where when I actually clicked, the window wasn't even open yet, and I have clicked on the desktop, not on the space the window was going to open to.

Oh weird, I wasn't having that issue, I thought you meant how sometimes the resizing "snaps" a few pixels off, which didn't seem too bad to me. I have not had anything like you are experiencing.

J@ffa,

That's the key question!

If there is a second GM released or even a different retail version, can I download the final release from the App store (while in Lion GM) and install over the Lion GM without losing any settings, apps, etc?

If the answer is "yes," then there is absolutely no danger installing this GM.

I just don't want to have to go back to Snow Leopard to install final retail.

The animation isn't any more elaborate. It just has some lag. But SL had this lag on GM as well and later on it became faster.

But Leopard is still much much faster than SL as well.

It seems regrettable that there are so many ppl out there accepting the removal of Front Row.

On the positive side this upgrade is going smoother than the clustermess called Snow Leopard back then in 2009.

Front row is ****. It was neat when it first came out, but right now the alternatives are all better. They need to drastically improve it, or remove it.

it also means that everyone with the GM installed doesn't need to pay $29 to buy Lion?

I don't see any of the lag you are talking about, if the animation is the same like you claim then on my end it takes the exact same amount of time as Snow Leopard. The animations are really smooth.

I believe they are asking if you can upgrade from developer preview, to public release and beyond.

Found from a quick web serch, the language is clear, and despite this being from an earlier release of Lion, I doubt it is any different currently.

My Developer Sub is not current, so I can't check from the Developer support site to confirm, but it looks quite similar to the Tiger & Leopard developer preview preamble.
It is different now: that has been removed and Apple now state you can install the GM release over dp4 update 1.

Ein? I don't want a DVD or a physical disk, the only thing I want is no forced recovery partition. I will transfer the dmg image to a USB stick, that's all.

The recovery partition is only 1gb. If you don't have room for a 1gb partition chances are you are having problems with your computer anyways. No system should be close to being full HD wise. It causes the system to suffer. if you have a 250gb hd you can't spare 1gb for a partition?

Front Row is a nice UI for iTunes content since i'm pretty sure none of the alternatives can handle iTunes video it's really a shame, because it doesn't hurt anyone to include it.

I am likely the cause of confusion in this. In the past, the GM release had no upgrade path like the retail versions. My suggestion was to find and read the release notes to see if that was still the case.

I apologize for not being clear, or for causing any confusion.

This is factually incorrect, in the past GM releases of OS X have always had an upgrade path. I think some people might be confused due to iOS releases, but OS X has been very consistent with the upgrade path for GM releases.

I don't know what all of the fuss is about how the Lion GM sucks. I absolutely love it. Granted I have the latest hardware (2011 17" MBP), so everything should be running smoothly in terms of no lag, animations, etc., but I really haven't found any bugs either. The ones I did find were minor and some can be fixed with an updated version of the program:

GFX Card Status: Will not change graphics cards unless you select dynamic switching and then the card you want.
MenuMeters: You need a different version of MenuCrackers (I have re-compiled the DMG so it's like a native install)

Lion bug: At first, when setting up everything in System Preferences, the lock (or unlock) to save/make changes worked on the first one I did, then would not work, unlocking or locking. A simple restart fixed this.

Other than those things, I have not found much. Everything is completely stable for my part. Installed from the DMG, typical clean install (or wipe-and-reload) from a flash drive (made DVD also). Got rid of the recovery HD (650MB) and all is well. Maybe it's some of your hardware or something but if someone is having trouble, I can (try) to test it on my end to see if it works.

No worries :). I could be wrong, since I never tried it, but Apple usually says 'don't install one over the other' to avoid problems, rather than as a hard limitation. Since the computer has no absolute memory of what OS's have been installed, they're pretty much interchangeable. He'll, I've even known people to go from Snow Leopard *back* to Leopard by simply installing one over the other.

Perhaps you are right, though I am not confusing iOS, as I have never had developer access to that platform.

That being said, I couldn't upgrade from GM of Tiger to the retail version of 10.4.1 . Simply would not let me do it as my OS was not supported. It is possible it was caused by something else, but I remember going back to read the release notes of my Developer preview, and finding wording similar to what I quoted earlier.

It may have gone away with 10.6, however I remember reading a similar line on that GM as well.

I found a bug, if assign a different wallpaper to each space and you reboot the wallpaper will default to the first space one.

It seems to be working fine after reinstalling since it had crashed during the install.
But lion saves some information on the pram about the install status, if the installation fails, when you boot the lion esd it gives you a error, saying that the install has failed.

I don't see any of the lag you are talking about, if the animation is the same like you claim then on my end it takes the exact same amount of time as Snow Leopard. The animations are really smooth.

I said it has lag. Not it's low FPS. Lag means it takes some time after you double click for the animation to happen. I don't know exactly how many milliseconds but it's not instant. That's causing the whole slow behavior with multiple window openings. That lag gets added up when you open 10 folders and becomes noticeable.

Anyway, I just realized there's a far more annoying bug.

The key repeat issue. When you hold down a key while typing, Lion doesn't repeat that key, instead gives you suggestions to different character variations. For example if you hold down "a" it gives you "â" as a possibility.

The problem is, there's no way to turn it off. So if you are like me who likes to type stuff like "woooooooooow", that means you'll have to hit "o" 10 times, because it won't repeat it.

That technically isn't a bug, it's a new feature. There should really be a way of turning it off though but I haven't figured it out yet.

Yes, the bug is not the feature, the bug is that it can't be turned off.

So you can't afford $30 to give to Apple for something? You have to steal it instead? Seriously?
