So you can't afford $30 to give to Apple for something? You have to steal it instead? Seriously?

I'm loving the fact that he's posted in a public forum under what is apparently his real name that he is illegally downloading Lion. Assuming of course he hasn't used a made up user name and posted via an anonymous proxy to hide his IP address that is.

It's a sad state of affairs that it doesn't seem to matter how cheap software is, people still feel they have a right to pirate it.

yes imma poor college student
Being a "poor college" student doesn't excuse you from pirating software that Apple developed. It's sad that people use this excuse to steal applications, as if that makes it right. Give me a break. If you can't afford it, don't use it. Or save until you can afford it.

okay lets say i have a dev account will i be able to upgrade to 10.7.1 via software update if i have the GM installed

Just answer his question and quit bashing him, come on. This is a forum to help people, not bash them about their source. If you have a problem, contact the correct authorities.

Your answer is yes (pending there are no more GMs). The GM is 95% of the time the final, retail version. Unless there is a huge show-stopping bug they must fix (which is doubtful), then you have the final version.

And as PurrBall said, keep Snow Leopard around (a machine or a backup) just in case Lion isn't the best fit for you or it's buggy with your programs, etc.

thank you :):)

I said it has lag. Not it's low FPS. Lag means it takes some time after you double click for the animation to happen. I don't know exactly how many milliseconds but it's not instant. That's causing the whole slow behavior with multiple window openings. That lag gets added up when you open 10 folders and becomes noticeable.

Anyway, I just realized there's a far more annoying bug.

The key repeat issue. When you hold down a key while typing, Lion doesn't repeat that key, instead gives you suggestions to different character variations. For example if you hold down "a" it gives you "â" as a possibility.

The problem is, there's no way to turn it off. So if you are like me who likes to type stuff like "woooooooooow", that means you'll have to hit "o" 10 times, because it won't repeat it.

I hope you dont honestly believe that's a 'bug'. With all due respect, that feature is alot more practical and important than being able to type 'woooooooooow' as quickly as possible. Actually, if it actually decreases things like that, all for the better. Just type the word how its supposed to be spelled, no need to add extra letters like that- pretty much everyone finds it unecessary and annoying. And if for some odd reason you feel a need to do this, it won't kill you to spend 2 extra seconds tying letter repeats. It might improve your habits. I mean, how many times a day do you need to type things like that anyway?

No problem. People on here should just help, not criticize them for potential wrongdoing. It's your choice to torrent it or not, your risk, so everyone else should just shut up about it.

Can you give us a complete list of crimes we should "shut up" about?

All the other posters were doing were criticizing him for torrenting the GM build. I just say who cares, answer his question, and don't criticize for something stupid. Honestly it's their ultimate choice to torrent, no need to bash him. If he gets in trouble or whatever, so be it. Just answer their questions and move on, that's all I'm saying.

Bugs I encountered in DP4 are still present in the GM.

eg every few boots the volume control is dimmed and audio not working, even rarer the wifi is likewise not functioning, the quirky flicker/colour tint change during the final stages of the boot screen, the dock occasionally spontaneously un-arranging icons that have been rearranged, Safari getting confused about UI elements that have been disabled/enabled in fullscreen mode (eg turn off the toolbar in fullscreen, revert to normal screen it is sometimes back otherwise turn it back on, but exit and reopen Safari and the toolbar is missing (an even more annoying glitch now that GM has removed the toolbar option from View menu, so not only can only hide it via right-clicking the title/toolbar area but the shortcut key is lost)), etc.

I am still very horrified they did not add in a UI widget that indicates scrollable content, even if it is nothing more than a tiny mostly-transparent arrow or dots. With no scrollbar (by default) there is no way to know that there is more content to see, so why would you necessarily scroll over it? Admittedly I occasionally have that problem on the iPhone too - it was only six months ago I realised Safari's address bar history list can be swiped over to reveal more history (though latest iOS does make bottom option only half appear so now it's obvious that there is more below, but that's just a work-around for a bad UI convention). The new dialog when Lion first boots is a perfect example of that - craps on about how the scrolling is upside down (eg we bagged MS because they didn't understand different between touch interface and PC interface, but now we've gone and shoved touch conventions onto PC interface ourselves), but doesn't actually say to "make sure you do a scroll on this actual pane because there is more content hidden below including the button you need to proceed further". Very odd. Alternatively, that scrollbars (again by default) do flash up for half a second when a dialog first appears could be tweaked so the fade process is much slower, saw 5 or more seconds, so is there for longer - or perhaps only fade to 20% opacity so they are still slightly visible...? Anyways, off topic.

Well when he decides to bring that up in his post I am pretty sure it opens him to comments about it. Also, we are being more helpful encouraging him not to steal in the long run.

Just to bring back the attention to the real topic at hand: Lion.

I've made a fresh install of Lion on my iMac i5 - I burned an installation DVD, booted it, wiped out the hard disk and then let the Lion installer perform the installation procedure.

The good news is, Lion is running and it also runs in the 64-Bit kernel.

The bad news is: So far, most applications randomly crash, including Firefox 5 and Amazon Kindle and Pulp (the latter are both from the AppStore). I'm still installing software, but this does not give me much hope that Lion is mature enough to use it on a production machine.

I find it amazing that -ALL- dot zero releases that I've used from Apple over the last six years have been so immature and crash prone (or caused other applications to crash).

For real work, it definitely is safer to stay on Snow Leopard for the next couple of months.

So he can afford a mac, but not $30 for Lion...

OMG $30 that is so like expensive.:D

The moral police is out tonight. Besides a fool to post ones source and cannot fathom the value of the developers, along with a sense of instant gratification and entitlement will only lead to... well I am sure you can figure the rest out on your own. ;)

Hence a partition or a test Mac. I would not install it on my primary business Mac that I depend on.

So far I am hearing varying issues across the board. Might depend on GPU or hardware period. Bugs will always exist on every piece of software. No majors bugs, is what counts. :apple: has to release Lion to start work on 10.7.1 update and the longer they wait the worse it will be for developers and the rest of us. :)

Is Lion a really step-down from DP4?

DP4 for the most part has been been good.

Major issues:

- Scrolling a bit buggy.
- Full screen view animations buggy.
- Resume after start is buggy.

But otherwise, DP4 runs way better than SL I must say.

If GM is more like DP3, then I'm not upgrading to it. I'll wait for another GM seed. I'm pretty sure there will be one very soon.

It's not just that they feel it's their right, they look down on you if you do pay for software like, "what is wrong with you?"

To all the people complaining about the lack of "Front Row", and whom never venture outside the world of Apple, or the apps they develop, may I introduce the cure to your blues; XBMC (Xbox Media Center):

Light years ahead of that dated software you're all moaning about being missing :)

One of my favorite interfaces. I'm thinking of putting it on apple TV. Anyone done this yet? Or have a link to another forum to do so? Especially since I'm likely going to set up at lest one Lion Server ...

That's a load of rubbish. It could be any day now.

This outta be interesting.

The first Post PC OS with lots of fluff & Fischer Price type ease of use.

Lots of shee shee appeal for the novices.

Particularily interesting will be all the fanbois gushing over it via a protracted love fest.

I wonder if this be another "AntennaGate debacle".

I won't be scammed a second time. I'm going to WAIT and see what the reviews are like before giving it the slightest consideration.

Hopefully Apple will have learned that no amount of of smoke & mirrors trickery can overcome good engineering, and stringent adherence to Apples once high standard.
