No it didn't vanish.

Where is it? I can't seem to find it. I noticed its absence when the shortcut on the dock was replaced with a question mark. It happened on two independent machines I am testing. One was a fresh install, the other was an upgrade over the DP8.

Can you point me in the right direction?

There are a lot of reasons to be free:
  1. It avoids fragmentation
  2. Apple already make money with third party software in the Mac App Store
  3. It's better for developers, because they only need to focus on the most recent version
  4. Apple can drop the support earlier and focus only on actual and new versions
  5. Everyone likes free stuff

Mine was in the dock, next to the new Maps icon etc etc. Not sure why yours would disappear? I don't use iBooks anyway, so I removed the icon. It's still accessible with CMD+space and typing "iBooks" or from the Launchpad, of course.

Can a registered developer confirm that the "Install OS X Mavericks.app" file downloaded from the App Store is this size:

5,311,726,978 bytes

It's not about secrecy, it's about keeping their computers up to date. It is something new, they were much better about it in the past (with some notable exceptions--Mac Pro and Mini.)

Doubt that. I don't remember Apple ever being that punctual with releases following processor updates from intel or moto.

I installed the GM over the latest DP and everything works fine except my iphoto library is now empty.
All my pictures are backed up, but still, am I the only one this happened this to?

I installed the GM over DP8 too and iPhoto library is intact.

And in addition to the arguments of why it should be free, look at what Apple has done differently this year. No announcement that it would be free for people buying a mac after a certain date, no announcement of pricing. Plus the system requirements didn't change so at least in theory nobody is stuck on the previous OS version because their computer won't run the new one. Those all make sense in the context of Apple making it free this time around. Honestly, wouldn't they rather have as many users as possible on the latest OS just for the sake of support and uptake of new features.

So, with the release of the Mavericks GM, is it safe to expect that any BTO Mac ordered now will ship with Mavericks installed?

So, with the release of the Mavericks GM, does this mean that any BTO Mac ordered now will ship with Mavericks installed?

I doubt it, release is a couple weeks away so they probably won't sell any machines with it until the actual release. Some machines may show up with it a day or two early at most, and ones with 10.8 may include a redemption code for the new OS in the box.

iPhoto Update

My install on my MacPro was perfect and works well. iPhoto update was offered and updated ... can't see much difference except for the use of Apple Maps vs Google. I suspect the same will be updated on Aperture too (at least I hope so!!)

However, on a MacBook Air where I did a "clean" install I am not being of erred the option to get the iPhoto update. Is there an alternative download somewhere I am missing (I tried the MacDev portal to no avail.)

Thank in advance.

Ken

I suspected I'd likely have to take advantage of the redemption code option. I'm ready to order my replacement iMac for the one that was stolen a few weeks ago. The hardware refresh is obviously already in place. I was just hoping that if I place the order next week, with shipping estimates at 5-7 business days, I might get lucky and have it arrive with Mavericks already installed.

FaceTime Audio

Is FaceTime Audio included in the GM build? No one seems to be talking about it as an option in the FaceTime app...

For all you newbies that think Mavericks should be free...only for those who bought a new Mac within about a month b4 public release. Lion was $29 Mtn Lion $19 It will likely be $19

FYI: Mac OS X upgrades used to cost much more...while Snow Leopard was $29, before that Leopard and previous were $129 and distributed on optical discs. $19 is a very good deal

Optical discs…..yes…..$129…..yes…..What were we thinking…..Seems so ancient now…..Suddenly I feel very old…..:(

Significantly faster waking from sleep than ML on my MBP 15" 2012.

The new BTO models will likely ship with ML with a redemption code for a free download of Mavericks once released.

As for confirmation, use an MD5 checksum rather than sizing. It is more accurate.
