This:

After formatting an 8GB USB as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and naming it Untitled, try this in terminal:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

Skipping Maverics

Think I'm going to skip Mavericks for as long as possible. Installing Lion "bricked" my old MBP and I had to get a replacement and considering how bad iOS7 is, I no longer have faith in Apple's software development skills. They are now Microsoft where you have to wait for several rounds of patches before things work properly. And I'm not sure any patch can fix some of the bonehead UI changes in iOS7.

Some updates don't need to know if you are a developer, such as the ones you encountered.

But the GM requires you to redeem a code which definitely requires you to be a developer (or appleseed member). (Same for full installers of DP1 and DP4).

Yeah, suspected as much, thanks for the confirmation.

For all you newbies that think Mavericks should be free...only for those who bought a new Mac within about a month b4 public release.

Lion was $29 Mtn Lion $19

It will likely be $19

FYI: Mac OS X upgrades used to cost much more...while Snow Leopard was $29, before that Leopard and previous were $129 and distributed on optical discs.

$19 is a very good deal

If any paying for updates, iOS 7 should've cost money.

I'm 99% sure I paid for iOS 2 back when I had an iPod Touch, maybe even iOS 3 which was ridiculous now that I think about it but I'd never updated something like that before so didn't know any better.

Mobile operating system updates often benefit the corporations that release them (goodies for developers and, in the case of non-Apple, the manufacturers = more money) more than the consumers. Not sure if the same holds true for Desktop versions where most platforms are very mature and the "walled-garden" approach that leads to money from developers doesn't tend to exist like in most modern Mobile operating systems so the charge seems acceptable.

I updated my iPhone 3G from iOS 2 to iOS 3 for free...first iOS to have copy & paste, lol.

You had to pay for iOS upgrades on an iPod because of accounting regulations: http://ipod.about.com/od/troubleshootingyouripod/qt/ipod-touch-upgrade-fee.htm

Anyone running mavericks GM on a mid-2010 MBP? ...I miss the speed & battery life I used to get with Snow Leopard....is Mavericks better in this respect than Mtn Lion?

someone posted in another forum that the iPhoto welcome screen GUI is now flat? what about the actual application itself? no changes?

I can confirm this, the splash/welcome screen definitely has an iOS 7 feel to it but the rest of the application doesn't seem to be affected. There are small changes but nothing dramatic in my opinion.

. I don't really care that Apple takes couple of months after intel as long as they keep putting new intel CPU's in.

Well, many other people do , especially schools and others who have to upgrade on a schedule.

Off topic a little...

I need a 'Sea Lion' sticker (or 'Sea Lion Inside' like 'Intel Inside') for my new MacBook Pro.

Image

Sea Lions (or Seals) exist right in San Francisco on Pier 39. Why would Apple say that they wanted to use something Californian like 'Mavericks', when Sea Lions are the perfect transition from Cats as they're Lions and also in California!

Let the Sea Lion thing go, it ain't gonna happen. :D Also Apple got the name Mavericks from a landmark closer to the corporate headquarters. SF isn't closer to Cupertino than Half Moon Bay.

Well crap. Do I then have to wait for the retail release? Can update from developer preview to whenever they have it on sale?

Well that depends. Are you running a bootleg version of developer preview?

if you have a developer account you should have received an email today with the coupon redemption.

Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade directly to the GM.
I am on DP4 and really can't be bothered downloading each DP separately. I couldn't find a combo update for the latest DP

I think that it is possible because the GM is downloaded using a redemption code and downloads as an installer.

No, developer previews were free to download and had no restrictions on them, so that is why I jumped on this. I remember that for Mountain Lion and Lion that GM's were free, right?

I wasn't a developer last year, but updated to the ML GM just fine (and it was released the same way as this time, with the download code for the app store).

Nobody should depend on Apple to release something at a given time unless it's announced. This is Apple and they are famous about the secrecy of their product launch dates. You can be sure they will release something eventually but not necessarily next week. And they have always been like this, so not like that's something new.

Doing a clean install (not upgrade) on my test build. 2 SSDs in Raid 0, and I'm installing from a USB 3.0 SSD - the install is taking ages. And I mean, ages. It's been about 40 minutes so far.

Mountain Lion installed in just under 10 minutes on the same setup.
