Was Mountain Lion just a cash grab?

So far haven't seen anything that would constitute the $19.99 charge for Mountain Lion, starting to think this is one just a large cash grab by a company that is gaining notoriety for doing very little between product versions and people jumping up to pay for it.

It seems very interesting that Mountain Lion was released on the day they announced not meeting expectations for a financial quarter. Stock price goes down, suddenly Apple reals in money from a, so far, seemingly unnecessary product update.

If Apple is going to start making these kinds of trivial changes to their OS X product, then it should start being free the way iOS updates are free. They once charged for iOS, then customer backlash forced them to give it away for free, I think more of us have to be critical of this kind of cash grab rather then blindly praising a company for making us pay more for nothing.

Oh well, I stupidly paid for it thinking I would get an "enhanced OS", Apple is obviously keenly in touch with their anticipated market.

I'm not sure I 100% follow you, but I agree that the Apple ID ecosystem will have in no doubt helped sales.

My point is: it's not like everyone and their dog were waiting for ML, it's just that it was easy and cheap to do the upgrade.

But even with these clear logistical advantages, 3% is way less than one would expect for a "major" release by Apple - if ML constituted REAL innovation, of course.

ML is a POS, but at the very least you should've read the rules first. I am sure it states "refurbs are not eligible"...

ML is a POS? Really? I think you must be exaggerating. Is it a complete reworking of an OS that blows people away? No. But it also doesn't cost $179.99 to upgrade. ML is just a refinement of Lion, and a good one at that. You may not think its worth $19.99, and that's fine - but calling it a POS is a huge overstatement. "ML is overpriced" or "ML doesn't meet my expectations for a major update" is much more accurate.

Just finished updating. ML is UNBELIEVABLY fast. It honestly feels like I just bought a new computer. Just looking back at it last year, Lion was a disaster compared to ML. I feel sorry for those 97% that aren't running ML, I'm in awe.

Edit: This is coming from someone who is highly critical of paid software updates, well worth the $20.

Why only 3%? I guess it just shows people are lazy and dumb. I came home, and as soon as I popped some food in the oven, I started the download.

If you think anything .1 is bugfree you make the 'idiots' look smart.

Way to post there champ!

-P

Maybe i didn't make my self clear: you do realise that your .1 release is 'bugfree' (ironic) because of all the 'idiots' (ironic) that jump at the .0 release!

And thanks for calling me champ (also ironic)

Other things? You mean, like spending hours posting in other threads?

Hours ? You underestimate my typing speed. ;)

No, like being on-call for one thing (not to mention the plethora of other things, barely managed to upgrade MacPorts/Xcode/Virtual box to ML compatible versions). "I'm installing a new OS on my laptop" is hardly what my work wants to hear when they page me about the ERP system being down.

Probably going to get around to it this weekend, if there's some clouds/rain coming. Otherwise, the yard is calling...

I am still wondering whether some people are saying this because this is how your computer feels after ANY upgrade (following major optimization/clean up of files/caches etc.) or because ML is really that faster...

Safari problem

After upgrading to Mountain Lion last night, Safari will not launch on my MBP. It simply stops and is unable to load it's first page. I have not had this problem on my iMac, Safari works fine therre. I uninstalled all extensions and it still will not launch. The progress bar simply freezes - but I am able to quit, try and reload, etc. (all buttons work).

Yup, and I'm one of those statistics.

ML is great. Much snappier, smoother, boot up time and shutdown time quicker.

Looks like Lion was Apple's Vista. That's all changed now. Totally happy.

How on Earth was it like Vista???

An unpolished product. I was initially disappointing that when i upgraded from SL that the boot time took 3 times as long on my desktop. The shutdown time was the same. It's the reason I never upgraded it to my MB Pro because it seemed sluggish all round.

Mountain Lion on my MB Pro runs like a dream.

Also - a lot of reviews on ML say that it is what Lion should have been.

I've tried it for myself, and yes I have to agree 100%

Totally worth the $20. Without any doubt at all.

I would say it is really faster. I have two partitions on my iMac. One partition runs 10.6. The second partition was 10.7. I did the installation of 10.8 on the 10.7 partition so it isn't a fresh installation but it is noticeably quicker. I was going to add a third partition but decided I can always do a fresh 10.7 partition if I needed to (I do compatibility checking for third party programs).

Is the 90% figure mentioned in the article (estimated percentage paid for) accurate? Seems it would be lower. Obviously there's piracy, but how does one purchase on multiple macs skew the figure?

AND, it may stay that way....

Well, let's look at a couple of other issues as well... IMMEDIATELY, after Mountain Lion installs, AND you TRY and start various, STANDARD, applications like mail, contacts or Safari, be REAL careful what happens.... Let's start with 'Contects' (address book) ... On my install TODAY, the initial setup thought my old pop mail account was in fact an iCloud account... UGLY. So, the way that Mountain Lion looks at 'contacts' as part of 'mail' and iCloud is a bit odd. Mountain Lion could not figure out who it was or what it was or where to go to find out when trying to 'update' my contacts database (217 entries) .... It just sits and churns in a loop FOREVER. Luckily, I was sitting at a Genius Bar, otherwise I would STILL be trying to figure this out. A 'genius' helped me by deleting some .plist files (he did it too fast for me to follow) but it was not fun.

THEN, because the initial setup process thought my old pop account was an iCloud account and allegedly messed up my 'contacts' database, when I started the Mountain Lion MAIL client, things got REAL strange... the new Mail just IGNORED almost all of the mail FOLDERS in my mail client from Snow Leopard... Just ignored them... I had to retrieve my latest Time Machine back-up and get my old email folders from that back-up. NOW, I have to IMPORT these into the new Mountain Lion mail client... This will take hours...

All in all... UGLY. AND, I was at an Apple Store !!!!!

First i was lest out of the 1% debate this past year, now i'm also left out of the 3%.

But that's not going to change, and i could probably care less, I really have no desire or incentive to upgrade my systems.

3% in a few days is quite a lot... think about the percentage of Windows users still on XP

But consider the amount of volume of one compared to the other.. the difference is HUGE!

Try temporarily removing safari folder and prefs from your user library. Type ~/library/ into the go to folder field found in Finders go menu or shift-command-g (I may have remembered that command wrong).

It might not hurt to empty all caches and repair permissions. Note that Disk utility doesn't really touch your user. Better to use the Mountain Lion password reset method. Startup the computer in restore mode. This is where you can reinstall, do a major restore with timemachine etc. same place you were when the OS update was being applied. Hold command-r at boot time (power up and immediately hold that command until you see tha apple logo). When booted run the terminal found in the menu bar. Type resetpassword into the terminal and hit enter. This will open password utility. Don't bother resetting password. Select the appropriate HDD and the appropriate user from the menu bellow that. Then way at the bottom is a button Reset ACL (did I get that term right?) it the bottom most button. When the Button turns to DONE your free to restart. If your already havering issues it might not hurt to perform this on all users listed in that menu.

Hope this help.

I found that after installing the paid update I had crashing from a bunch of OS apps like app store and preferences. I cleaned out my library only putting back resources and prefs I really needed or were complicated to set up. All has run perfect since then. Except steam. But that didn't run properly under Lion either despite complete reset ups. No idea why it won't run properly. Friends don't seem to have this issue.

Apple have banked the entire future of Mac OS X into Mountain Lion. If it flops expect Macs to take even more of a back seat to iOS for years to come.
