First, Apple intended for these private betas to be ... private. The developers know that putting all of their files into SL beta is a bad idea. That's why they don't. What you're saying is not a problem for SL's intended audience, but for people that shouldn't have gotten the beta in the first place.

Alright, that's what I was wanting to know. Thank you :)

Mac OS is missing cut/paste, but Windows is missing stuff Mac has as well. Not just one-sided. The dock is divided, so you can only put non-apps on the right, since most people are right handed.

BTW, in Quicktime 7, you CAN adjust brightness in a movie/video. Just go to Window > Show A/V Controls. Or simply Cmd+K. The video brightness adjustment bar is the top-right corner.

read my post carefully, i did say qt X not 7 and i believe 7 will not be includrd in final version of SL. Even the good things apple had given us, they have now taken. and so what if u pull yourself with your right hand. it dont mean sh*t. close button on left? file menu on left? freqently used finder icon on left?

Like i said, please give us a handle on our mug and not just a tissue to help us hold the cup when its hot. I'm only asking for the most basic of things. I'm not asking for games support for mac. or direct x 10 for mac. I want cut/append in folders so don't over write my files, and brightness control in Quicktime X

edit: oh and drag and drop files from stack to aps on doc was available in the previous build but now has been disabled

SL is coming along nicely.

The new Dock-centric navigation will pove indispensable. I look forward to a few more UI goodies before release.

I have a question about users of the Snow Leopard preview who obtained it in ways other than Apple's distribution at WWDC and to developers:

Has apple explicitly stated that obtaining or running the Snow Leopard preview is illegal for non-developers?

I understand that downloading it from a torrent or receiving it from a friend is taking for free software that eventually will be sold. Any information you could provide as to the defined (not speculative) legality of running a preview build would be appreciated.

....Wow.

Why the hell don't you just take that $100 and donate it to charity or something, or buy someone a nice gift, instead of donating it to a corporation that already has an extremely healthy profit margins on all its products? You're certainly a 'special' type of consumer.

I think I may pay the full price as well. If the $29 SL DVD only allows an upgrade from an already installed Leopard and doesn't permit a clean install. It is not an update but an upgrade. And I don't trust such a huge upgrade through replacement of individual files. If the DVD just checks that Leopard is installed and lets me erase the hard drive, I will just pay the $29.

However, even if the upgrade had cost $129, I would have readily paid for it, like I've done for all Mac OS X upgrades so far. I think too that Snow Leopard is worth this price, as I am more concerned about under the hood new technology than simple make-up.

If the guy wants to pay the full price, let him do. That's his money. What do we care. I've read someone put $25,000 in a sarcophagus recently ...

As for donating the 100 (and more) bucks to charities, I would leave that to each person's pondering. But we could give some time too. For giving money is like lavishing presents on a child we don't care about or don't have time to cherish. How many of us would be ready to work for a charity during vacations for free?

If i could i would burn you a copy of my ferrari and u'd love it just the same.
Piracy of trial beta software for the purpose of contributing to bug reports and previewing what you are about to buy is in the whitest section of the grey area of software piracy. it is all completely non profit and all credit still goes to apple... even in the form of constructive critisism that in most cases will benifit all apple users and apple's market share. its a win win situation. So seriously dude, if u paid for the SL preview, you did so to test out your own software for profit reasons. if u paid for it for non profit reasons, congrats, u just gave your money away for an empty jar. (full of air). like what i did when i gave that old woman with a crystal ball to read my future. i bet you feel like this now and you feel the need to rip on us for you to feel good about yourself. (sorry, had to play this card. lolz). Pull out that darth vader figurine out of your ass and relax a little you tyrant-wanna-be-not-gonna-be. Have some common sense and leave us alone. we do no one any harm.

Is there any word on when stacks will work the way that they where demoed before the actual release of leopard? I mean right now stacks are just a modified front end to folders in the dock. Instead of being a new function it actually makes things harder and more cluttered.

A new folder type for stacks/piles would be nice. Something that could exist inside or outside the dock that automatically creates aliases or links when items are dragged inside would be ideal for me. Even allowing manual sorting within the folder type could present benefits when organizing projects, etc. Manually creating aliases in the folder doesn't quite do the same thing.

Your post reminded me of this video:

In some ways it's overkill, but relating items to the real world could be helpful. Maybe future operating systems will work with a combination of stacks/piles and metadata-based organization.

Dreaming about the future

I am in no way attacking anyone. I just want to know if it is illegal for me to be running the Snow Leopard preview I download online, because if it definitely is, then I will just wait the couple of months until SL is officially released to use it.

The marble is a lie?
the cake is a lie.
Great to see some small UI improvements.

I know many of you many not like this, but I'd love a MobileMe-like theme such as Kevin Andersson's mockup:

I like the general color scheme, but the words should be either white or silver and metallicy(which is so a word as of now). I think that marble mock-up is quite nice(as a concept, I'd be mad if that were real).

Personaly, I think Apple should have 3 UI choices: Marble, Aqua, and Candy.
Marble: What we've been expecting.
Aqua: A closer-to-the-original-but-with-some-improvements versions of aqua.
Candy: A more colorful version of OSX. Some colorful stripes, nice and vibrant for those who aren't as into silver minimalist:p

If those were changeable easily systemwide via system preferences, then I think that would be quite nice. Certainly a "big"(not really big, but changes end users experience, there fore big) feature to tout of 10.7(lion? isn't that the only other big cat besides clouded leopard[at which I think people would be fed up with the same features]).
I have Leopard, but I'll be buying Snow Leopard for $129 instead of $29 because it's worth way more than that to me, and a healthy markup is what allowed Apple to become what they are, so I will continue to do my part. Thanks for your hard work, Apple. Keep it up.
Steve Jobs would be proud(or disturbed)!!!

dude, ain't no one gonna check your puter for trial software, just go for it. as long as u don't use for profit, and have it as a separate partition, with a purchased version of leopard on another, a jury will definitely have sympathy.

Snow Leopard, you FINE THANG!

I really like where this Snow Leopard look is going. I think Apple is going to hold out on the major overhaul to the UI, though. I was disappointed at first, but now I think it was a good idea for them to wait for Win7 and then take a year to try and out GUI it in every way they can.

This one might make you think I'm crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Apple pulled a Quicktime on the whole OS and had the menu bars hide themselves when you mouse off a window. Now THAT is minimalist. They'd need to show the folder name still, of course.. just get rid of anything extraneous when you're not mousing onto a window.

I would like to add my name to the list of people asking for a Finder cut/paste. I'd also like to add a Windows-like address bar, so I can tell someone on my network "hey, you can find my file here "p://projects/awesomeaccount/graphics" (and they can click that to take them to my file, without repeating my click by click trip to a certain folder). Maybe building SVN into the Finder would be a better solution, but I don't see that happening, either.

So yeah... yay Marble, yay aesthetic changes, and yay under the hood improvements. Cheers!

What's up with the colour of the floor of the dock? Is it a mod or something?

(sorry if that's already been asked)

If you look a tad closer at the new list style, you'll notice a few things. Not only is the list transparent so that you can see what's behind it, but this is the first UI in OS X that slightly blurs what's behind it as well in a Windows Vista fashion. It should also be noted that the list view blurs it's backgrounds but the grid view does not (yet). ...
To be honest with you, I don't like it. I always hate it when there are dark colors in a GUI, and I absolutely hate transparency, now we're going for an Aero Glass style?

Come on, guys.
Not too harsh.

It's like donating money to your favorite football club. Like paying too much money to Manchester United via buying a new home-shirt at the shop inside the stadium. :p
You KNOW you are paying far too much money for something you can get a lot cheaper... but you want to pay for it...

He is simply enthusiastic! And he is willing to pay more for something he really wants.

A problem with your analogy: here the choice isn't between paying full price for an officially licensed product from a company/team you support and buying it from a non-licensed street vendor. It'd be like if you supported Manchester, and wanted to buy a shirt they were offering in the stadium on sale, but you refused to take the sale, and insisted on paying full price.

Moving on,

I hope they implement "marble" (if it exists at all) across the entire system. I really hope Apple doesn't go the old route of 57 different, and often clashing, GUI themes, elements, and goofs. i.e. Tiger.

To the people saying that talk about the GUI is inconsequential, it's the face of your OS. It's what every day users interact with. Good design there can go a long way, and in fact it's part of what separates Apple from... er... others. ;) IMHO that makes it consequential.

Dear "special" consumer, we are Apple Authorized Service Provider in New York City. We will be selling Snow Leopard for $599. Please, come to us!

We value your support,

New Quicktime X icon?

There's still no sight of the new quicktime ICON...or is it something i missed? i upgraded but still that icon is not in sight.

That's a perfectly valid question and I'm not quite sure why the other guy whipped out the douchebag stick.

I'm not sure of the legalities, but I'm pretty sure obtaining SL in any other way other than through the Developer system is illegal... But the thing is that with Apple, we get a little more trust than, say, Microsoft, because they know they have our loyalty.

It's not like I would ever pay for a developer account because I'm not a developer, so they're not even losing money. I'm running the SL beta right now. Am I afraid Apple is going to come at me with a cease and desist letter? No. Am I going to buy SL on launch even though I'll probably have the final version seeded to me from Apple directly? Yes.

But am I going to buy 4 more copies of SL just because I think Apple deserves my money? No. That's taking things a little too far (yeah, I'm looking at you, coolfactor).

So yeah. I'm gonna say just go download it and give it a try as long as you know you'll be purchasing it in the end. That's how we retain trust with Apple. They took out the serial numbers for iLife and iWork, didn't they? :)

And don't let the guys here bring you down every time they spout their "WHAT YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SUBMIT BUG. U R NOT REAL DEVELOPER OR U R BREAKING NDAAA!!!!111" They think that not caving in and not impulsively downloading SL makes them some kind of honest, honorable king of the fanboys.

They're just jealous. :)

Can't wait. Seriously.

I hope my 2.0 C2D white iMac and my rev A MBA will play nice w/ SL.

timshundo, thank you for the honest and thoughtful comment. I've decided to keep snow running, and am loving it! :D

And I have a bug question: does anyone else experience a painful 5-10 second freeze whenever you right-click on a misspelled word to correct it?
