Cant use software update

I am right now using 10.1.2, and lately its been going a little nuts on me
When I try to run software update or mail, they open part of the way and then quit "unexpectedly"
If anybody has a downloaded copy of the system update or if anybody could be of any help, that would be great
Thanx for any help

My software update control panel in really unrealiable! Sometimes it downloads about 75% then it quits (this varies though). I gave up and downloaded the update from the apple web site in the end.

PB startup with VGA external monitor

Since upgrading to 10.1.3 I can not use my PB, G4 550 MHz, with only the VGS (Apple multipleScan 20") monitor on. that is to say with my LCD from the PB shut, to get the full 16 VRAM.
It used to work fine under 10.1.2...
anyone else have this problem or knows a work around?

Besides that 10.1.3 seems to be moderately snappier.

<a href="http://downloAd.info.apple.com/Mac_OS_X/062-9450.20020218/MacOSXUpdate10.1.3.dmg.bin">if software update does not help.....use this link</a> & why is html not turned on?

about speed...I tried bundeling some system items (kind of like what the OptimizeX app does, and I would not suggest using it....It tends to REALLY slow down log-in and system prefs....

I updated my systems. Seems to work fine. The iTunes visuals are better, there is a slight speed increase with the finder. I especially can tell on my older iMac 400.

Took the leap...

And pretty good experience thus far.

I had one very scary moment. My machine froze completely (cursor freeze) while the installation was "optimizing". However, everything came up fine after reboot.

I seem to notice a slight speed improvement in the Finder with SMB networking. Could be the placebo effect.

iTunes visualizer is noticeably faster on my B&W G3 400.

10.1.3

I have a B/W G3 400 and it also froze during the optimization but after a restart the system came up ok and I noticed that the finder was a lot snappier (as others have stated).

suggestion

For everyone having issues with the update to 10.1.3 I have a suggestion (take it as you want).

Zap your PRAM (apple+option+P+R if you didn't already know, at boot/restart, allow to chime for 3-6 times and then release).

Doing that fixed my minor issue with the computer's serial number no longer showing up under the Apple System Profiler. I don't know if it will fix all of your issues, but I figure it is worth a shot. It might even take care of that pesky military time of the clock for some people.

You will probably need to go into the System Preferences and reset your time (make sure to uncheck use network time server).

now.. my machine still booted up ... still saying it's 10.1.2 server ...ok ... now i want to redo the software update ... but I cannot anymore, because it doesn't offer me any updates anymore, because it thinks i did it already ... great ...

is there a way to reset or control the software update thingy

i just ask becuase there is NO standalone updater (yet) for macos x server ... i tried the normal macos standalone updater, but still says 10.1.2

anyone?

Check out my same previous post in this same thread. You did update successfully, and it may have changed the build number, but it still says 10.1.2, the same thing happened to me on a previous update. About 3 wks later, apple released an update for the server version. Don't sweat it, it worked the way apple wanted it to, I imagine.

USB QPS Que! drives still no good

well i've heard a few other reports, but just thought i'd give mine as well. my QPS Que! 4x4x8x cdRW still doesn't seem to be supported. the system profiler shows it but i still can't even get the drive open. it is a shame.

also just woundering if the visualization upgrade is for the generic iTunes Visualizer, or if it was also for others such as the original: G-Force (http://www.55ware.com/gforce/index.html)

I just installed 10.1.3 on 2 machines, a G4 Gigabit (400) and a B/W G3 (350). Installed without a hitch, I gained 4 fps in iTunes, and my LaCie U&I CDRW is now recoginzed. Kudos to Apple for a great upgrade.

How did you see the FPS in iTunes?

When you are running the visuals (except in full screen mode) there is a small item in the upper right hand corner labeled 'Options'. Click on this and you get a dialog that has check boxes. One of them is Display Frame Rate.

I did notice that when I was not in full screen mode, the frame rate was about 1/2 of what it was under full screen mode. Granted, this is on a rev a TiBook, I will be checking on my desktop at work sometime tomorrow (G4 733MHz pre-QuickSilver).

Two questions..

Does zapping the Pram erase all of your preferences?
My ibook 500 only displays military time?! Will zapping the pram really help?
thanks...

It doesn't erase all of your preferences. You might need to adjust the brightness of your lcd screen (I did) and turn off the network sync for date and time, unless you want to use it. I had to turn it off when I did this at work since the firewall there blocks access to the Apple time servers (pain in the butt).

I gave it a go, and only had a couple of things that I needed to reset (date and time, and brightness) which were minor.

zapping pram doesn't kill your preferences. i forgot the specifics of it, but your pram is physical chip. it has something to do with hardware identification i believe (??). Preferences ? Preferences are stored on your hard drive in the system folder.

in any mode in itunes, press "h" or "?" (no shift for ?). "f" displays the frame rate. "q", "w", "a", "s", "z", and "x" change the appearance of the visuals. not sure what the slideshow is. has anyone had problems with that? namely that itunes says one visualizer shape is being used when it's actually the one next in line.

Am I nuts?

I finally sat down and really started working on my iBook tonight and this thing feels quite a bit snappier then before I had it updated to 10.1.3. Maybe it is just because I have had it stowed away for a couple of weeks and I was working on the old iMac DV? It just feels crisper in the Dock and pulling up Finder windows. I did not think that Apple did any finder improvement in 10.1.3 but it seems snappier. What do you guys see in your systems or think? Is it just me or is there a noticable improvement? Like I said I was on the iMac for a stint and maybe it is just the far superior speed of the iBook 600 over the old DV 400...

Remember

Remember that long wait that says 'system optimizing', well that would attribute to everything feeling snappier.

anyway, OpenGL games run like lightning now. It's fantastic.

I posted preiously that qps will have support, sorry, I meant for firewire. what better time to upgrade?😡 I have a USB burner also and am looking for hot deals off EBAY, however it could be removing the drive and installing it in place of the normal CD reader will fix our problems.

something to do with ata 0 & ata 1 etc....I may give it a go this weekend on my B&W 350 mhz, there was a post about this on apple's dicussion boards under "Sony"....however, 10.1.3 was amazingly faster and now I want to use OS X prmarily!

Server Update

This may have already been posted, but I noticed OS X Server Update was available yesterday. There have been a few posts on this thread regarding the Server update.

No, it doesn't.. Not all preferences are stored in PRAM. Things stored in PRAM are things which have to endure reboot and aren't OS specific like the volume level and the current system time (notice if you turn the volume down or hit mute before reboot, the reboot chim obeys the last setting for volume.. that's in PRAM)..

As for military time display, that is set in your System Preferences.. Zapping PRAM is not a solution for that. Simply open preferences, open the International pane, click the Time tab, and click the 12-hour setting instead of the 24-hour setting.. voila!

Whooo HOO!

I hesitated putting this update on because of all the funkiness that others had experienced, but after making a disk image of my current system, I went ahead anyway. After months of unfullfilled promise, I am finally able to file share with my Win2K machine on our domain. I was able to connect to most of our WinNT4 servers on the domain fine by using smb://server/share, but I could not get to a shared folder on my Win2K Pro machine, or any other mahcine that was not a server until I put on this update. I kept getting the error of machine not found or not available- something like that. I had been using FTP to get stuff from my G4 to the PC, but now the connect To Server option works! Yeee Haaaaa! Now, if only they would add the ability to Browse the domain........

unclepain out.

Re: Re: Something had to go wrong...

It appears that the 10.1.3 updater expects the apps to be in their ORIGINAL locations, or they are not updated. Instead, the 10.1.3 updater dumps a folder with the contents of the update for that app in it's place.

Look at today's entries for MacOS X on www.macintouch.com and you will find a nice gents post about how to move these updated bits into the package of the old app to complete the update.

This happened to me as well - I had my Mail.app inside a subdirectory of Applications called Network for better organization. In addition, the same thing happened with Image Capture.

I managed to fix it, though. First, open up your existing Mail.app, and note the version number in the Mail / About Mail menu, just so you know it gets updated when it does.

Next, you should back up Mail.app in case you screw something up. I did this by opening Terminal and using cp -rp to copy it to a new filename (example: cp -rp Mail.app Mail2.app)

Then view Mail's package contents in the Finder. Drag all the files from the Applications/Mail folder that 10.1.3 just installed into the existing Mail.app package contents where the existing ones are, overwriting them. Et voila, you have an updated Mail.app. Mine went from 1.1 (v475/481) to 1.1 (v481). Whatever that means.

The same procedure should work for Image Capture too.

And the Unix people save the Mac people once again! 🙂

?

Alright, i don't know why I asked this, don't flame me, but WHY DO YOU ALL CARE? It's a minor update. I'm just waiting for 10.2 on my new DG4800....
