I really like this OSX so far, having downloaded the public beta and tested some of the features last night (UK time).

I really like the new look, also the new email features are great, being able to add a signature by drawing on the trackpad, and the other features with markup is welcomed edition. Also Safari seems faster and the new tabs view is better. I'm also loving the new Spotlight.

So far so good :apple: :D

My first impression was good, it looks nice but I wish dark mode actually made the whole interface black. Not just the menu bar and dock.

Using a pink flower wallpaper defeats the purpose of dark mode. If you use a dark wallpaper, it looks great!

Yes it does look great, that is until you open an app. Without it darkening windows it's pretty pointless.

I agree that Yosemite looks horrible. The new features are great but damn they dun-goof'd that UI. It may the the first time ever I've let the look of an OS stop me from using it. OS X used to have a professional shine to it I liked.

While there are a lot of Yosemite users who like the changes Apple's brought to Yosemite, there's a much longer complaint thread entitled "Yosemite Looks Terrible" …
Well, the "Yosemite looks terrible" thread is much older, so it's no wonder it's longer…

Hm, the pulldown menu is far too transparent for my taste. That looks worse than the too transparent menus in one of the previous OS X versions (could have been Leopard) before Apple backpedaled after severe user complaints and toned down that effect.

Running on my ancient MacBook Pro from 2007 (oldest supported laptop). No longer a primary machine, so I figured to give it a whirl. Originally came with 10.4.10. I thought for sure Mavericks was the end for this, but I guess not!

Current performance seems akin to Mavericks, which isn’t bad. Haven’t noticed any other issues yet.

It's great that Apple is willing to keep the Santa Rosa MBPs chuggin along. :apple:

Pleaase give details on the performance - how does it run? Any major hiccups? Do you have SSd installed?

I like the UI when windows are active, the windows that are not active look horrible

Safari should be better!

I just want to know when Safari will be fixed? I like safari but it uses lots of resources and causes slow downs with my late 2011 MacBook Pro. I use something to free up memory but it struggles as it is. Anyone have a better solution other than upgrading my ram?

Of course better night not be good enough for you. However Mac OS itself doesn't reallynrun well on 2GB of RAM, these days 4GB should be considered minimal and ideally you will have a lot more.

I base the statement that Safari should run better based on running the WebKit nightlies which in general perform much better. Between the operational experience and a bit of following the WebKit blog I know that they have fixed a lot of issues within WebKit/Safari. In a sense they have modernized the code to reflect good practice with respect to C++. So give it a try

Moan Moan Moan...

"While there are a lot of Yosemite users who like the changes Apple's brought to Yosemite, there's a much longer complaint thread entitled "Yosemite Looks Terrible" that includes complaints about Dark Mode, "crappy" fonts, and the bland look of the translucency. Users also say Yosemite looks far less appealing on a non-Retina display."

Moan Moan Moan.... well I like it! and love the Dark mode.

Just had my first half an hour with Yosemite, it was all a little overwhelming at first but wow.. how freaking good is it? It's so clean! Bugger about the Air's non-retina screen, gagging to see it in retina. Messages, mail, safari, finder, spotlight - just wow. 10/10

edit: +100 for dark mode! love it. +100 for the change to Helvetica!

----------

I foresee a busy weekend of unofficial downloads for iOS 8B4, it's almost brutal not to give people public betas of both.. very tempting!

Install went well. Took about 20 minutes, maybe less. I wasn't really paying that much attention to it. No big issues so far. Typical for what I expect out of Beta software. Finder restarted itself a few times. I REALLY hope they change the default folder color. It's horrible. Now I'm off to abuse the hell out of it to see what it can really do.

Folder icon is fairly easy to mod no? I mean you can always paste the old one into the relevant system application/directory if it bothers you that much.

Edit: I guess you'd have to copy the complete system icon set.

You would choose this (Windows 9)

[snip]

Over this?

[snip]

Could you be any more dishonest? Your Windows screenshot is showing a possibly canned UI idea that was not meant for public display and your Yosemite screenshot is 95% wallpaper and doesn't show the UI at all.

Surprise, surprise...

" Users also say Yosemite looks far less appealing on a non-Retina display. "

Really? People are surprised about this? Of course it won't look as good on non-retina Macs. Apple wants you to buy a retina Mac.

Installing mavericks on my work-iMacs took 3-4 hours. Somehow I cant believe that Yosemite takes only half an hour according to some users here. Well, time is gonna tell...

Something tells me that the folder/system icon set in Yosemite will be different in the final release. I could be wrong of course. It's just that it looks like a bad-designed linux icon theme (and there are tons of them out there).

I think it looks lovely. I think that style works a lot better on OS X than on iOS.

Agreed that dark mode's utterly pointless unless it effects apps though. Obviously at first it would only work with Apple apps as developers would need to use new API functionality, but that's surely the way to go.

Can't Install

Created a partition for Yosemite.

Downloaded Yosemite.

Started install, directing Yosemite to install on its own partition.

First part all okay, then Mac rebooted.

Screen of users flashed up, as usual, but was unable to click on a user or enter a password. Therefore, completely stuck.

Turned off, restarted, same issue.

Starting using alt key only identifies one drive...neither Mavericks nor Yosemite, but an entirely new partition. Clicking that, it goes back to the user login screen, which again is unresponsive.

Can't get into Mavericks. Can't complete Yosemite installation.

Entering recovery mode and then disk util, the Yosemite partition is greyed out. The partition can't be deleted or changed.

Anyone else have this issue?
