Its good

Really like Yosemite, its clean, sleak has new features that I like. Didn't take long to install.

Didn't mind Mavericks but like the flatter, minimalistic style to it. Some might not.

Am going to stick with Safari too, think it has improved so much. Looking fwd to integration with sms and messages with 8.1 release on Monday.

I've tried four times now to do a clean install, to no avail. It just doesn't like it for some reason.

I'm on a 2010 iMac so am in the same boat as you with regards to handoff or continuity. I can't even update though, so I'm not missing much at the moment ;)

I'll try updating over my current Mavericks install instead tomorrow. Then try a fresh install from the recovery partition. I just always like a clean install with major versions.

Glad you got it sorted, enjoy the flatness!

My buddy did a clean install without incident. However, he has a newer MBP. I think I'm just going to clone my backup back to the iMac and wait to see what the future holds.

That's funny all my non Apple phones seem to function properly, my original HTC desire still works 4 years later, all my computers still function properly. If you don't drink Koolaid it's amazing what you can find for much better prices.

Don't worry about unfair, Apple is making heaps of money, that's all that counts when you're an Apple lover.

That's great that you found a nice HTC phone, but my experiences were different. I had the HTC droid incredible and then the HTC rezound and both had numerous crashes, bugs, and overheating problems which is why I switched to apple. Since I've switched I've been very pleased with the iPhone. It's not always "drinking the koolaid". Sometimes the top company does make great products too.

No, PB 6 was the last public beta, so there was still another one after yours. PB6 has a different build number than today's release. Download manually from the Mac App Store and install. It won't show up as an update.

My mistake, I have PB6. So if I download Yosemite from the app store, do I just run the installer over my PB6, or do I have to do a clean install? Really not looking forward to migrating 500GB of data again

Lol the first thing I did when I got my iMac was use a script to disable the stupid volume button clicks. I hated that.

Why would you need to use a script? You know this setting

SoundEffectVolume.jpg

has existed for over a decade right? It also exist in Yosemite, it's just turned off by default and there's a new sfx if you turn it on. Furthermore you have ALWAYS been able to shift-click the volume buttons to temporarily mute the effect.

No, I don't think so. I had Beta 6 installed and no Yosemite final release even appeared in updates, so I'll assume Beta 6 was the final.

I did download the full installer, but I don't think I'm going to use it unless someone gives me a reason to.

As for problems, the same ones are still there.

#1) Excruciating boot time.

#2) Displays System panel can't remember my boot display.

Can't wait for 10.10.1 already.

Yeah my mistake, I meant PB6. Yes, boot, shutdown and sleep are lagging for me. I also wake from sleep at different times, the display stays black, but it's on for 30 secs or so and then goes back to sleep. It's been doing that since the first beta. Sent a report to Apple. I'm staying on PB6 for a bit longer though

We had the same experience. I used to be Dell/Antec/Thinkpad and Samsung Galaxy. Misery misery. My friend convinced me to try an iPhone and I have not looked back and have simply gone all Apple: iPad, iPad mini, iPhone, 2 mac mini & iMac. (Yes, I use computers all day.)

And any time you get version X.0 you will have problems. (With Windows, the rule was to not install until SP1 came out, 6 months later. In fact, their releases have become so problematic that companies skip half of them. Vista? Windows 8?)

Unfortunately they decided to give Ive too much power. Why was he allowed to design software?
Yosemite looks like a 10 year old designed it and why is the search bar and back/forward arrows so small in safari?
I would love to see Ive shown the door. I'm tired of his skinny mania at the expense of function. What's the big deal with this guy anyway?
Make it white and make it skinny. Wow

Is there any way to change the Safari toolbar with an extension? Apple doesn't give a way to make the search bar longer or change the size of other toolbar components
Awful design

Okay, I wish I knew how long it takes to install, right now it is taking FOREVER to download! I've never thought I had terribly slow internet at home but dang, this is ridiculous! I started downloading it an hour and fifteen minutes ago and am at 3.89 GB. Did anyone else have problems with slow downloads or is it my internet connection? I'm a little concerned that with how long it is taking, I'll somehow end up with a corrupt file.

Why would you use the arrows when you have the swipe gestures?

WOW. Yosemite must be really fast, 'cause it's been displaying "About a second remaining" for the last ten minutes. Such time dilation with respect to earth time corresponds to roughly 299792 kilometer's per second, or 99.999861% the speed of light!

User Interface Design: A Failure

Overall functionality in the new OS is great. The design however is not intuitive, and there is precious little support within Help for all the users who suddenly find themselves on a learning curve.

The flat icons might be functional, yet we pay thousands of dollars to be in the Apple ecosystem to see 70's design?
A Note is a 3 M sticky in my world, a Safari should have a nicer compass at this price point, and iTunes now has a red blob with a musical note stuck on it, apparently as an afterthought. This design produces a larger gap between user and technology that Apple historically narrowed. After all, where did WYSIWYG originate? Apple.

Safari's interface was designed pixel by pixel to leave more room for the web content. I understand that. The sacrifice in intuitive functionality with small icons, small search window, and so on is a high one.

As Apple's customer base ages, and becomes more multicultural, these aspects appear to have been roundly ignored in this design. Small means hard to find, and frustrating as senses become problematic with age. If English is a second language, 'show sidebar' explanations when mousing over an icon are not particularly illuminating.

Perhaps there are legions of users who adore the new design. My friends and family, in a quick poll amongst the generations, don't seem to be among them either.

If this is truly a generally accepted point of view, Apple will hear of this and the next interface design will of course come our way. Hopefully that will be soon!

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for letting me know I'm not an Apple lover. After over 20 years of using only Apple computers and smart phones I was clearly deluded. Good to know my place, thanks to you.

Every-time someone guesses my password, I have to change my dogs name. He's starting to develop a twitch!

Thank you WindLasher... made my day :)

Please stop taking things away people use.

I work as an IT admin for a TV station. I use network utility often. As do the broadcast engineers. Well first Apple moved it to a successively more hidden place. But spotlight could find it.
Now it's just gone. Only a link to a wikipedia article remains. Which is kind of an odd result for a spotlight search when you expect an application?!
Another fine example of the current crew at Apple fixing stuff that isn't broken by breaking and removing stuff that was perfectly fine.
What is the replacement for Network Utility? I'm sure I can find an app, but why should I have to?

Not going to lie, I kind of like the flatter look. Though I am not crazy for the IOS style hyped up colors.
Extensions is baaaack!
It's like OS 9 all over again.

Can I update without losing Windows on BootCamp ?
Yes you can, I've got Windows 8.1 on Bootcamp, no problems that I can see so far. I updated both.

No need to thank me, glad to be of service.

I just DL'd and installed Yosemite.

Oh boy... wow, it's kinda ugly looking... sorry to say.

So there are already some threads on the internets as to how best to go back to Mavericks.

Three main approaches seem to be suggested:

Option 1:
=====
(i) Make a bootable USB drive with Mavericks installed on it (if you don't have one, see: http://osxdaily.com/2013/10/23/create-os-x-mavericks-install-drive/)
(ii) Start up your Mac, hold down the OPTION key, select the USB installer with Mavericks
(iii) Install it over Yosemite ...

and apparently ... you will have a nice new shiny Mavericks Mac again (leaving everything intact). I am going to try this shortly.

Option 2:
=====
(i) Boot up and hold down: COMMAND-OPTION-R
(ii) Boot into the Recovery HD. Not sure whether this will work: does it recover into Mavericks, or into Yosemite?

Option 3:
=====
Time machine - for those who keep backups :)
