Its pretty funny that the new toolbar is essentially the same as the 20 year old Unix CDE which everyone hated at that time when we used the slick Openlook from Sun :)

Download complete - but where is it? It's not in my Downloads folder under any REAL name or recent date. The window telling me it's ready to install has no close button for me to perform that later ... after I read whatever problems are revealed by the early adopters / testers.

How do I locate this installation device later?

It's in your /Applications folder.

To quit from "ready to install", select "quit" from the menu bar at the top.

Has anybody else noticed this?

So there are already some threads on the internets as to how best to go back to Mavericks.

Three main approaches seem to be suggested:

Option 1:
=====
(i) Make a bootable USB drive with Mavericks installed on it (if you don't have one, see: http://osxdaily.com/2013/10/23/create-os-x-mavericks-install-drive/)
(ii) Start up your Mac, hold down the OPTION key, select the USB installer with Mavericks
(iii) Install it over Yosemite ...

and apparently ... you will have a nice new shiny Mavericks Mac again (leaving everything intact). I am going to try this shortly.

Option 2:
=====
(i) Boot up and hold down: COMMAND-OPTION-R
(ii) Boot into the Recovery HD. Not sure whether this will work: does it recover into Mavericks, or into Yosemite?

Option 3:
=====
Time machine - for those who keep backups :)

I tried option 2 and it tried to re-install ML, which this mac shipped with. Got stuck in utilities and the OS wouldn't install. It kept trying to install but just kicked back to Utilities. So I don't know. Hit Command+R and re-installed Yosemite to get out of the loop. So that option didn't seem to work. I don't mind Yosemite though, I can deal with it. Would rather have ML, or Mavericks though, no big deal though.

May be able to do a partition and install ML on there and delete the Yosemite one perhaps. May do that if I feel froggy.

I tried iCloud Drive briefly and ditched it as it wouldn't let me delete the unnecessary folders such as Quicktime and Automator.

Also, it seems I've already lost 600Mb through the backups like Notes, Safari etc.

I'll be sticking with Dropbox and Box.

I am so glad that they fixed the sorting issues with the Open/Save dialog, again. They decide to break it every other version on OS X.

I have not had a chance to try out Spotlight but it reminds me of the original version in Tiger which was the best rendition of it.

The design reminds of the time I went to a restaurant and discovered that the chef is the one who'd designed the blender.

i am thinking back to when I was a Windows guy, & they came up with Vista & & &. You could stay with the latest updated abilities, but they let you have the choice of the new look, or "Classical" look.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a "Make it look like Mavericks" button ;)

Cant make or receive calls on 2011 Macbook air

Anyone else with this issue or is it just me. I cannot either make or receive calls on my 2011 Macbook air using Yosemite of course. Is there a tweak I am missing or is my hardware just not upto it?

Downloaded it yesterday. It looks okay, I'm not amazed, but it's not ugly either.
Though it is running a bit slower than Mavericks on my 2011 13' Air. :(

Also:

Does anybody else his/her MacBook Air freeze after wake up?

Sounds like you need to switch back to Windows then.

so now if you want to maximize, but not go full screen, you cannot do that ? u need to drag ?

I'll download 10.10, but olny use it in a VM since i wanna see if i like it..

So, far the video looks too much like "just more" iOS-type implements on the Mac"

Ain't virtual machines wonderful :apple:

If you hold down the "option" (alt) key while clicking the green button, you get the same Maximise effect as in Mavericks

ah, a hidden feature....

With Apple's "one green button, does more than one thing." the OS is no longer "easy" anymore it once was with Mavericks.. this will take time.

since solution, but users has to now know which is which... I wonder why the change ? If Apple is THAT tight on space, and it sure looks like integrating most of in in the URL bar of Safari, how the hell are users expected to know ??

I was playing round in a virtual machine for 10 minutes before i found out the URL bar was also search you Mac too.. Nice to see Apple makes the user work hard again :)

I had the same concern. But once you're in it...it's hard to explain. It's not flat like you might think. There's something about the way the OS is layered now that still gives it a sense of depth without feeling artificial (like early OS X versions). It's also the first OS upgrade in quite some time that seems to make things respond quicker. There's something very snappy about the OS.

chezhoy
Definitely different...very flat appearance. It took an hour or so to download on my late-2008 13" aluminum MacBook. It does seem easier on the eyes, despite the fact that I don't like flat.

Ok based on these two responses here I think I'll give it a try.

There is nothing wrong with your rig, but it is the weekend, & I noticed today, i downloaded to my iMac in the morning in 30 minutes. Later, the download time for my Macbookpro was 8 hours.
I don't know how fast your internet connection is ( I have a fast cable one, but still look at the second result!), but everyone wants it, so give it a day, see how it goes.

I work as an IT admin for a TV station. I use network utility often. As do the broadcast engineers. Well first Apple moved it to a successively more hidden place. But spotlight could find it.
Now it's just gone. Only a link to a wikipedia article remains. Which is kind of an odd result for a spotlight search when you expect an application?!
Another fine example of the current crew at Apple fixing stuff that isn't broken by breaking and removing stuff that was perfectly fine.
What is the replacement for Network Utility? I'm sure I can find an app, but why should I have to?

Not going to lie, I kind of like the flatter look. Though I am not crazy for the IOS style hyped up colors.
Extensions is baaaack!
It's like OS 9 all over again.

Network Utility hasn't gone anywhere too far away. My Spotlight still finds it, but if not it's in /System/CoreServices/Applications.

Seems a lot more 'hate' of Yosemite on this board than I would have expected. There are some jarring changes but on the whole I like it. I could live without the retina frying blue folders and the traffic lights aren't great but generally I've got no major issues with it. Apart from a bit of RAM hunger on its part maybe.
