Resolved OS X Yosemite on Unsupported Macs [Guide]

What do you mean when you say "it crashed after a few seconds"? Did the progress bar move anything or what?

Ok, so what has worked for me is that you boot into Lion, access the Yosemite hd, go to /System/Library/CoreServices/, delete PlatformSupport.plist, and replace boot.efi with the one in post 2. I'm not sure if that will really work but give it a try!

I already made what you are suggesting; I deleted .plis etc. to install Yosemite.
The main problem now is that I entered in yosemite, configure everything (the GMA X3100 now works well, 144 MB ) I re-boot, after that but I am no able to enter again...
it seems there is some issue on the kexts .
the strange things is that the same happens if I reboot from the USb I used to install yosemite as indicate in post 1....

very strange
I think that the USB was corrupted, I have prepared another USB, but same results...

Maybe you will need to now create the USB manually like in post 1. I also ran into problems with SFOTT USB key, so I followed the instructions in post 1 and have not run into problems ever since.
 
EFI Crash on boot install

Hi guys,

First of all, thanks for all of the hard work from Pike, tiamo, and everyone else in the mix. I have had a lot of fun working with my old mac because of their effort to keep old machines alive.

In any case, I've had a lot of trouble trying to install Yosemite on my iMac5,1. I updated my iMac4,1 to the iMac5,1 with the firmware update. I have also installed a Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of ram, and a 128GB SSD.

The machine works and had Mountain Lion (10.8) installed on it as I managed to rig it up with SFOTT. Once I updated, it went dead (obviously). Then I came across this forum which had more information on the whole issue and what i had did wrong.

I have tried to create a boot disk myself, along side the one that is downloadable through the forum. The boot disk does the same thing in both scenarios: I can select the disk at start up, and once it gets to the Apple Logo, it seems like it freezes. Then it appears with a full progress bar below the logo. There is nothing after that.

This same issue occurs with both the black and classic boot efi mods. It also occurs, like i stated, with the downloadable, pre-made disk.

A similar issue occurs when I create the Yosemite disk with SFOTT. On boot, when I use the original tiamo EFI, there is a missing folder icon that flashes, surrounded by a black screen with a frozen underscore on the top left.

I have other Yosemite accessible Macs available. The iMac5,1 is accessible through Target Disk Mode as well.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to get this white devil rollin'. Thanks in advance.

I have tried all steps:

I have a mini end 2006, originally 1.83 GHz (T2400) Intel Core Duo, 512MB upgraded to Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz T7600 processor, 2GB. Running Lion.
at boot:
– Black screen white apple – attempts (60% of the times) to run installer and crash (after showing some text) quite early in the time bar.

So

– What is your assessment?
– Should I first try with Maverick (if it is worth to have it with respect to added values)
– I am downloading (will see it tonight as I am in the office) Piker-Alpha bootable Yosemite installer, would this have same results?
– Finally I downloaded from here: http://oemden.com/?smd_process_download=1&download_id=1379, most updated link?
- I saw somebody say you have to rename installer to Beta
- Other things like sudo I should do in order to let mac-mini with my carachteristics start? (other adjustments for Ghraphics I understand should be done after full installation)

I know that the "beta" thing is unnecessary if you have the public installer. Just change the installer version to public release ie "Install OS X Yosemite". It will give you some message about being obsolete because it hasn't been released, but when it is released, it will work. From my experience, SFOTT runs, just produces an unsuccessful product.

Now everything is Ok

Yosemite starts, sometimes crash, but normally the boot is ok; the same the USB key.

Of curse no posible to wake up when the mac goes in stop.
Any news about this issue?
Another thing: it seams the mac is quite slow, the battery (that is new, just substituted) has max 2.3 h of charge, i was expecting about 4-5 h at least...

I will change my HD with a SSd, after that I will let you Know how will the behavior

Thanks, don't know, I tried to put installer version to public beta release but no changes.
Now, it seems to me that indeed SFOTT doesn't actually work on my mac.
I tried Piker-Alpha bootable Yosemite installer, weird as it boots well, pair with trackpad and keyboard, asks for the language but then says: Yosemite is already installed on this mac, cannot continue etc...restart.

Said all that, as soon as i have time, I will try the longer method at #1 but, if also that fails, I believe somebody should tell me what more i have to "change" pre-set in order to go on.
I am now wondering, i could actually start trying with Mountain Lion or Better Maverick...but in the end, I wouldn't mind to have a yosemite, provided is 90% stable...

The OS X Hackers app should have the No Sleep dmg which will prevent you Mac from going to sleep. But to answer your question, we are aware of the issue, but there isnt a true fix for that.
 
On the 2006-era iMac we did get Yosemite to install 😀, but we found that SFOTT doesn't work, it kernel panics early in the installation process and then the machine reboots into Lion. Then we started over following the step by step instructions in post #1 but had a rather difficult time of it because the OS X Hackers site was inaccessible for a time for some reason, so we didn't download the YosemitePatchFiles.zip file until the end of the process. I really wish we'd had access to it earlier on because it contains most of the software referenced in post #1, and we wouldn't spent considerable time trying to find Lion versions of the software mentioned in that post on other sites. But in the end, were were successful in getting Yosemite to boot!

So now to the last remaining hurdle. I see this in the contents of YosemitePatchFiles.zip:

AirDrop Enabler [Directory]
Animation Disabler [Directory]
AppleHDA.kext
DisAppear.app
Flat Package Editor.app
IORegistryExplorer.app
Kext Utility.app
NoSleep-1.4.0.dmg

But there's no single zip folder named "kexts", so do I just open the Kext Utility.app file included in the zip file, and then drop the kexts from inside ONE of the zip archives kextATIX1600.zip, kexts950.zip, or kextsX3100.zip onto Kext Utility and it will install them? Or do I install the kexts from all three? And after that, am I correct in assuming that then I drop AppleHDA.kext onto the Kext Utility and it will install that, and that's all I need to do besides following steps 2f through 5f? Or do I need to install the kexts from the "Other Kexts" directory also? It's just really confusing, because step 1f implies I only need to install the kexts from one of the zip files, plus AppleHDA.kext, yet there are multiple zip files and a directory containing kexts.

Then after that is there anything else I can do that might help improve the graphics on this iMac?

I did take another look at OS X Extractor (the 1.2 beta 6 version) but I am TOTALLY confused as to what to do with it. It almost looks to me like something I should have run prior to installing Yosemite, perhaps, but if not then what I mainly would like to know is exactly what to do with it so it installs ONLY what I need to install improve the graphics, and not anything that will break this install after I spent so many hours on it!

Okay I know you guys are trying to figure out OS X Hackers patches. I'm not gonna interfere with that. But would you believe me if I told you I've stumbled upon X3100 kexts with at least SOME graphics acceleration?

YouTube doesn't glitch.

Chrome is perfectly useable.

I LAUNCHED MUTHAF%&#*#N VLC

Launchpad doesn't glitch.

The login screen doesn't glitch.

Apple maps launches but the map isn't shown. BUT THE APP LAUNCHES.

I have partial dock transparency without CDock (But I kept CDock anyway mainly because I like having custom transparency)

This is not a joke. Say the word and I'll link you to the Google Drive I was linked to. One of my subscribers on YouTube told me about these kexts. Said he didn't understand why my screen flashed at login, to try them. Maybe they were different. He included an IntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext that had been patched for X3100. Guys it really works. I'm estatic. I hope to God I spelled that right.

I really appreciate that you do work on a tool like this but at the same time I really wish there was a video showing how to use it, or a walkthrough with screenshots, or something that would show us how this is supposed to work. As I said in my previous post, this program totally confuses me, and I don't know if it would be beneficial to run it now that Yosemite is installed or not. I just don't want to mess anything up, since it took so long to get this working!

EDIT: One thing that confuses me is why, if this is meant to be used after the install is completed, it requires "A copy of Yosemite or Mavericks in Applications Folder (.app file preferred)" - that's what makes me think this might be something you are supposed to run prior to doing the install.

I will plan to make videos with OS X Patchers and more screenshots for the Extractor. It is meant to be used prior to installing OS X Yosemite as it gets some files from the .app. If you already installed OS X Yosemite and have the working kexts for your mac, you should be fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it 😉

WHAT EXACTLY DID YOU DO TO GET IT TO BOOT?!?! I've read other things about the kernel I will try to extract it with the package editor.

Also, just unzip the kexts for your card. Then drag and drop them on top of the icon.
 
Is MPF done for? I remember seeing some info about beta2 coming out soon. I'm a little confused as i'm not sure if OSE or OSP has replaced it now,
