Saying that "all smartphones" suffers from antenna issues is a total crutch.

Fact is they may, however they shouldn't. Instead of striving to make a perfect device Apple and almost all other tech companies just try to make something better then the norm. Then giving us reasons to settle, instead of fixing the problem. Not at all happy with todays conference. Still not wanting an iPhone4

As if someone cares if you want it or not...

It is amazing to see Steve Jobs in a totally different mood. It looked like this sentence wasn't complete "We love our users and work our butts off for them... and they stab us with a knife in the back. Thanks. We will try harder"

It really made me feel bad even if I never had a problem with this iPhone 4 issue... We, people are so great and innovative when trying to criticize something... pathetic!

Can't wait to get a white iPhone 4 :)

Do you work for Apple...or do you just enjoy talking crap?

Mmm can't wait for that white iPhone 4 to come out, with a free case no less! Just wait for another cluster**** like on the day the iPhone 4 launched, women and children huddling and crying for shelter, men dying in blazes of glory, credit cards exploding and shranpel taking out pedestrians beside Apple Stores....the gods descending from the HEAVENS! shining their acceptance upon our blood soaked iPhones! YES! IT WILL BE DONE!

....

Or i will just preorder...stay home and sip on cocoa....mmm marshmellows. :D

Still holding out for a white one. I've seen the black ones at Wal-Mart and even held the box in my hand. I was so tempted to get that one, but still want the white one.

Call me crazy, but Apple being very coy about the September 30th date says to me that there really may be a Verizon iPhone coming this fall for the holidays! They might make a minor revision to the AT&T model like a protective transparent coating around the band or something at that time. Otherwise both phones would be the same except for cell chips obviously. Then next year will be the 4G world phone!

Ok you are crazy. Nothing coy about it.

You are an idiot that cannot understand simple things. Making a perfect device? In what alternate universe are you living? What part of the other smartphone demos did you not get?

If you don't want an iPhone4, WTF are you doing on this website? DO NOT BUY THE iPHONE4!!!

Well another couple of countries getting a few iPhones delivered by Apple and were told that it is the big launch of the iPhone 4 - like in Germany where delivery status for the iPhone reaches 9 weeks from now with german Telekom, the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Germany. Even if you where first in line on June 15th. you may not got your phone by now, if you've registered for an 32GB version. Complete mismanagement by Telekom and too early release by Apple...
Hopefully production increases and the demand will be served shortly...

Although Apple is providing full refunds and/or free cases, Apple is still not addressing the problem...just providing a workaround. Granted many people may not know or care about the problem once they have a free case.

Here are some points to ponder:

1)Apple claims 3million iPhone 4 phones sold...yet only 0.55% of them have been returned for "antenna problems". Well, a)that's still 15,500 people and b)how many people have had their iPhones long enough to notice the problem AND HAVE TIME to return it or complain? I know several people who ordered phones weeks ago and they were just arriving yesterday and today.

2)The 0.55% seems extremely low...I'm sure with all this media fuss and Apple's emergency PR meeting, there were more than 0.55% returns due to antenna problems (and/or Apple expecting huge customer complaint numbers once everyone actually received their iPhone 4 and had a few days to use it). I would bet by end of July when every customer actually has had the iPhone for more than a week this 0.55% would be up towards the 10% range...but we'll never know...and we'll never know about (since today's conference) how much sweet talking Apple will do to future customers trying to return it (probably "hey, take the case and we'll give you ANOTHER 30 days to return it...pretty please?").

3)The iPhone 3GS has been for sale for 9+ months...with a return rate of 6%...iPhone 4 has been for sale for 22 days and a return rate of 0.55%...you can't compare these 2 percentages. Let's hear what Apple has to say 9 months from now on iPhone 4 returns.

My gut says that within a few months there will be some kind of recall or even a very very very quiet Rev2. Personally I don't understand why my finger located over a spot kills the reception...but put a piece of rubber between my finger and the same spot and it all works fine.

-Eric

I'm not trying to defend Apple, but you're getting your facts mixed up:

1) No, 0.55% of customers called AppleCare about Antenna issues, the return rates are 1.7%

2) Well, you're right, it is more than 0.55%, 1.7% like I said.

3) Well yes you can, because they were only taking the early shipments of the iPhone 3Gs into account.

4) What's there not to understand about that: When you touch your iPhone screen with your finger, it responds doesn't it? Yet, touch it with a piece of rubber and it won't have any effect. Same logic Oh and my gut says a recall is never gonna happen.

waiting government approval...

As usual they always make it difficult for others to sell stuff in Korea that is not made in Korea nor Korean. Buy Samsung or LG  Visit Seoul and see if you can buy a SIM card as a tourist or visitor. In just about every other Asian country one can buy a SIM card to use in their phone accept for Korea and Japan.

I guess that's why apple didn't want to reimburse 3rd party case.

Why would they reimburse a 3rd party case anyway?

I am using a leather 3g case that cost me fiver - because i like flip cases.

I look forward to getting a bumper as a spare, but wouldn't dream of expecting apple to pay for something from another company.

Especially as the offer runs til the end of sep!

You are seriously messed up if you think you are entilted to something like that!

I have been playing with the baseband code and have found a software solution. The problem comes when the antenna is grounded out or the capacitance of the human body detunes it.

The key is to power down the amplifier tied to the antenna when a call is made. With the amps killed, no RF energy is transmitted or received from the phone. Thus any detuning will be irrelevant.

I have found some problem with dropped calls using the modified code. I think the best solution will be to remove the RF circuitry and replace it with a cable that connects to the POTS network or your local cable company.

hahahahahaha :p:D

RIM responds to Apple over antennagateby Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Jul 17, 2010, 76 Comments

Co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have released an official response from RIM to Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference yesterday and Steve Jobs’ demonstration of a BlackBerry Bold 9700 suffering from similar signal-drop when death-gripped:

“Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.”

CrackBerry Kevin ran a death-grip poll on CrackBerry.com and as of this writing 14% had the death-grip, 72% did not, and 14% saw bars drop but come back.

When you factor in that we don’t know how RIM calculates bars, what dropping and coming back up means, and add the crucial crazy that makes iPhone 4 antenna issues so maddening — that not everyone has them, and the whole situation has snowballed into equal parts fact and frenzy,

Steve Jobs might have done better mentioning the industry-wide death-grip problem as a bullet point and saving the videos for the Q&A if he got called on it because there was every chance it could come back to bite him in the a$$. Likewise, RIM might have been better off not making a public statement, going with humor, and letting the public weigh in for a while because this can now come back and bite them in their own co-a$$es. Why?

Same reason Steve Jobs’ should never have sent that “hold different, get a case” email response. RIM has now cued everyone in a weak signal with a BlackBerry to rev up their YouTube engines and start asking for free cases. TiPb’s already getting email:

I reported last week to [that] I could do just what Apple said in their news conference today, it was nothing against Blackberry. I own a Bold 9700 and a iphone 4 and my statement was it was no big deal. This is my third Blackberry and third iPhone. For you to say you have avoided the problem is in fact a misstatement. Your phone does the same thing without a case on it that the iPhone does and it does no harm to either phone.

Now for the big question Since my Bold 9700 does what the iPhone does are you going to fix my phone because it must be defective.

Thank You, Dwight

TiPb’s own Alli Kazmucha, who’s in a weak signal area, has been able to reproduce the BlackBerry Bold 9700 death-grip as well:

I managed to replicate [the death-grip] on a 9700 in less than 15 seconds, and on a 3GS.

We have bad coverage around a certain area in town, and like Apple said, in poor coverage areas it can be replicated. People forget that key point.

I’ve replicated it on my iPhone 3GS as well.

Nokia and RIM have both chosen to respond. We’ll see if Samsung does as well, and if HTC and Motorola decide to get into “antennagate” as well. One thing’s for certain, Phil Nickinson from Android Central is right when he says any new phone that gets released from any company now is going to be under increased — and in some cases ridiculous — antenna scrutiny.

Glad to hear that it is still on schedule for a July release in Canada. I am on Telus and I always get full bars in my area (If that even means anything anymore considering their signal bars formula blunder) so hopefully the effects of the antenna issue will be minimal.

Ahhh... white iPhone.

Ok you are crazy. Nothing coy about it.

Guess we'll see in a couple months. There is obviously a good reason why they are only extending their "fix" to the issue for two months and will then "reevaluate" the situation!

I think the free bumper period is just Apple buying itself time to work out the issue in software if possible or the implementation of a modification on the assembly line to reduce the antenna behavior.

A software fix is likely possible (increase power to the antenna when the signal attenuates during transmission), but the question is how much battery life it will cost, and whether it will receive regulatory approval (a number of licensing agencies are becoming very particular about allowable signal strength in a device held next to the head...)

So in the end the iPhone antenna issue may not get resolved because of the Obama administration:eek:

Exactly my point! I think this is just the beginning of something else in the works! Them only offering this "fix" only till September 30th makes no sense otherwise!

Now if you think about it, if there is a time when Apple would be making changes or launching a Verizon iPhone anyway, that would be the PERFECT time to also update anything else they want to on the current iPhone 4 on AT&T. I'm just saying it makes a lot of sense, but obviously SOMETHING is in the works!

Now if they do make hardware revisions after September and then think I am just going to stick with my unmodified iPhone 4, WOW are they WRONG!!! I will DEMAND a new phone if they try and pull something like that, and I have a feeling a few million other people would too!!!

All I know is if the white phones are really as limited as the chinese blogs are saying, it's going to be very, very hard to get my hands on one.
