I've logged a case with Apple.

They've escalated the case to Engineering. Seems this is a known issue - works for some folks, not for others.

They are looking to collect data on what works and what doesn't in different environments, so if you are having this issue, I encourage you to call Apple (800-MY-IPHONE).

Thanks.

issues with iTunes recognizing Outlook contacts

I'm having issues, as are others, and I suspect this might be due to the format of the .PST

If you are using an old, non-unicode, version of the PST file and having issues such as iTunes not syncing with your contacts (and possibly coalendar items) please respond to this post and let us know if updating to the new (post Outlook 2003) unicode file format (the same file format that allows file sizes greater than 2GB) aleiviates the sync issues.

I've seen some documentation (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306635) that suggests this may be an issue. I have tried everything else I can think of, including reinstalling iTunes, restoring iPhone to factory settings, deleting sync histories, etc. i have not yet tried updating the file (which entails creating a new file and exporting all info into it). This is my next option, but I'd love to hear if this has cured similar issues for anyone else.

Thanks,

SteveE

I have a question and this seems like a good place. How well does the iPhone support Exchange 2003 and 2007? Can you sync all of your PIM information or just emails? Does push work?

One thing you may want to make sure of, is that you have all of the latest updates to outlook. As I stated above I am using outlook2003 with all updates and this feature is is available.

Short time lurker, first time poster. I'd like to add to this thread to keep it alove in hopes someone comes along with a solution.

I am able to get the Phone to sync with Groups (folders) but only on my home computer, not the one at work. The same symptom exists - nothing shows up in the Groups window in iTunes, hence, can't select anything.

It did work for a hot minute while I was testing - I added a folder, and it showed up. Then deleted that folder, and configured my Outlook with several folders, placed the contacts in them, and it hasn't worked since.

I think this is a problem with Outlook or one of it's plugins more than iTunes and the iPhone. Windows Mail (In Vista) groups show up with no problem.

In fact, I'd use windows Mail if the iphone could sync to its Calendar, but it can only see the Outlook Calendar. ARRRRGH!

Solution to iPhone Sync issues

Finally I've solved my issues of the iPhone (and iTunes) not being able to see (or sync with) my contacts. I advise everyone make sure they are using a Unicode version of their PST file. Even if you are running Outlook 2007 you may still be utilizing a non-unicode PST (this is the file format of all pre-Outlook 2003 data files).

See this document for info on converting your file (I found the best method was to import my info into a new Outlook file):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306635

Determine the format of your PST file:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP010435561033.aspx
Convert your PST file:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP010383511033.aspx?pid=CH010404871033

First create a new (Unicode) PST, make that your default data file via the File/Data File Management selection. Remove the data file that had been your default data file, then import your data from the data file you removed. (to be safe I quit Outlook and restarted after each of the steps above).

I lost my filter rules and master category list (with colors) after doing this, but that shouldn't be too hard to rebuild.

Best of luck,

Steve

I was able to sync up what I wanted a bit easier.

In Outlook 2007:

Click "Go", then "Folder List".

Move whatever contact folders you want as subfolders under the main "Contacts" folder. Move whatever you don't want sync'd up somewhere else.

While the initial reaction of someone might be to have all folders under that main Contacts folder, you can't choose just the root folder and no subfolders (my issue).

I also have a problem syncing Outlook 2007 which is connected to an Exchange server.

In Outlook, I have a connection to an Exchange server, an IMAP mail server, and personal folders. I use the Exchange connection for my job.

If I select Tools|Account Settings|Data Files tab, I see that my Exchange data file has the comment 'Default'. When it's set this way, iTunes does not offer me any 'groups' to sync with, only the 'All Calendars' and 'All Contacts' radio buttons can be selected, and I get 'synced' from my Calendar and Contacts files in Exchange.

I'd rather keep my personal data private and on my machine.

If I change 'Personal Folders' to be the default, then iTunes will sync the Calendar and Contacts I have in the personal folders. I don't have any groups created, so I don't see an option to sync selected groups. This does, however, net me the results I'd like to have, syncing my personal data instead of the corporate data.

The problem with this is that now, my Exchange email has to be downloaded (and removed from the server) to be read on the PC. I can no longer see the latest x days of mail from the iPhone. In fact, the only Exchange email I see on the iPhone is unread mail. Not a good thing.

So I synced my calendar and contacts, switched the Exchange data file back to 'Default', reinstalled iTunes cause it got real confused, and will wait to sync again when I can.

Has anyone made it further than me in this quest?

I Think I Figured It Out!!!

hey guys,
i have been having the same frustrating problem like everyone else. then i thought about my security software. i disabled my mcafee SYSTEMGUARD and the groups popped up after few seconds and i created new groups in outlook and they all appeared. if they do not appear, just select WINDOWS CONTACTS and then back to OUTLOOK and they are there.

try DIABELING your antivirus and system protective software!!!!
it worked for me.

oh, by the way, i hate apple and AT&T, and i like the iphone and love the idea but i hate the suckers that are limiting it on purpose.
we are ready for more...
we have been ready for a while...
does not even support stereo bluetooth...

i am ashamed on my iphone...

bittersweet

format of PST it was!

After hours of trying and famous old googling, the issue was solved bij setting op a new (default) pst, copy all address entries into that new reposotiry and syncing now actually DOES something...thanks a lot!

The latest iTunes update fixed this problem for me. Now that I don't need it and using MobileME!

Can anyone tell me how you add contacts to a group you have just created? I am probably being a dumbass but just cant do it!

This was sort of already touched on. check out post 14.

In that screenshot,

the "Groups" are the blue bars named:

My Contacts
Stardock Corp.
Community
Mobile
Misc.

They are created when you click the "Add New Group" link. They are meant NOT to hold individual contacts, but actual "folders"...so you should create a new "folder" and name it what you want. You can then copy or move contacts into that folder. The folders can then be moved into different groups.

As far as Contacts is concerned, the various groups or single Contacts list MUST be in the main Contacts folder - not archives or some other location - it's the only place the iphone knows to look.

I did all this but cannot populate the 'groups' shown on the iPhone with data. The iPhone shows the groups but there is no data in them?
Let me recap-
Windows Vista Business
Newest iPhone GS with newest OS
Newest iTunes with latest updates
OUTLOOK 2007

iPhone shows 'groups' but no data except in the 'All Contacts' group.

My print screen shown below: 1) Note the 'groups' are in the OUTLOOK Contact pane under 'My Contacts'; 2) The Groups each have a folder with the same name as the group, and 3) The print screen show the data that is in the 'folder' in the 'group' in the 'my contacts' in the 'contacts'.

What you don't see in my iPhone groups exactly as show in the 'contact' pane BUT NO data!

HELP!! I still haven't got this right.

I have been going crazy with this. I did have my "Contacts" folder showing in my iPhone but after upgrading to Win7 and reinstalling Outlook 2007 I lost it. I can sync my sub folder contacts but not the main one. I don't know if thewre is a conflict between itunes, Outlook 2007 and Win 7 but it is driving me nuts
This is something I posted

I have Outlook 2007 with Windows 7. Somehow when upgrading to Win 7 doing a clean install my Outlook "Contact" folder was corrupted. I tried creating a new profile several times and at first it is fine but then quickly becomes corrupt. I know this because the check-mark square is greyed out in Contact properties to show as an email...
I have Micro Office installed so can I just delete Outlook and re install?

So I find it may not be actually corrupted but it is screwy

Anyone??

I cannot get my sub folders to sync, see above post. I can only populate with data the 'all contact' folder. How do you get the sub-folders to populate?

I can sync my sub folder contacts but not the main one.

Thanks a lot, but I have been using Contacts groups with Outlook 2007 since the FW 2.x and I think even with the iTunes 7.x, or iTunes 8.x. :D

But, take care because the Outlook 2003 gives a lot of problems synchinng.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot, but I have been using Contacts groups with Outlook 2007QUOTE]

What does that mean, 'I have been using Contacts group with OUTLOOK 2007’? Do you have access to all your OUTLOOK 2007 Contact 'groups’ on your iPhone 3GS? Or are you saying OUTLOOK 2007 populated your iPhone 'all contact' folder but no other folder? Please provide more detailed information of the data that you sync with OUTLOOK 2007 and MORE importantly which email server you are using? I can sync my various OUTLOOK 2007 Contact folders to my iPhone groups using my Gmail account, but I cannot sync my contact folders with my iPhone 3GS using my Comcast.net email accounts!
Again clearly give a description of what you are doing and what is the outcome. And screen shots would be a GREAT help.
Thanks
Robert

Did you figure it out? I see in your screenshots you don't actually have contacts in that folder. I see a distribution list in your screenshot. In Outlook "Folder", "Group" and "List" are three different things.... And sometimes "Group" and "Folder" are the same names for different things

Anyway, it's always worked for me if you still need help. I don't like how iPhone's contacts work with Outlook because you have to choose between which Contacts list you want to work "properly." Meaning, iPhone doesn't have Categories, and Outlook doesn't have an "All Contacts" view that works with contact sub-folders. For this I think you have to finaggle with the "Address Book" and yes, Address Book is yet another different thing from your Contacts list/book/folder/whatever. So I choose having contact sub-folders in Outlook so they show up in my iPhone as groups.

cheers

Hi,
I bought a app that allows you to send an email to multiple email addresses without having to input each email address individually ie it hosts my Outlook 2007 email Contact 'groups'. These Contact 'groups' are set up in Outlook 2007 but they are NOT Outlook 2007 email Groups! SEE MY PRINT SCREEN, YOU WILL NOTE IN THE 'CONTACTS' SIDE BAR THERE ARE GROUPS OF CONTACTS, FOR EXAMPLE ONE IS LABELED 'NAVY EMAIL LIST', AND YOU WILL ALSO SEE IN THE CONTACTS MAIN PANE FOR EXAMPLE A GROUP LABELED 'NAVY'. The word 'group' describing 'Navy' 'business card was automatically put there by Outlook 2007 not me. The app I bought will not recognize the OUTLOOK 2007 'Navy' group but it will read the FIRST email address of every contact I have in my Contacts side bar group.
I do not believe you can send to an email group/multiple email address on an iPhone without an app ie I believe the iPhone itself doesn't have the capability to send to a 'group'/multiple addresses with out adding the addresses individually.
Robert
