I got my i7 2days ago they are beautiful!:)

nickrojasmac!
the 10.7 drivers u installed where did u get them?I have bootcamp 3.1, I installed win7 then I installed the drivers supplyed with the osx-disk,I then did an update on the win-7 side incase there was an additional driver update,
and im not sure they are correct, sometimes when playing games theres kind of a line/chopyness around the middle of the screen
(im a complete novice when it comes to macs! this is my 1st one, but very capable on the pc side of things)
this happens mostly during theatrical parts of games not actual gameplay, it happened in 'pure' and 'dirt 2' im running things as high as they go and at native res- I tried the fraps thing with 'sands of time' and it was mostly 40fps (it didnt really move) and assassins creed 2 (hovered at around 30fps alot)obviosly you can run updates on your computer, but is there
any way of knowing youve got the right and most up to date drivers?

Of course the internal temps raise when CPU temps raise because iMac is AIO and there isn't much airflow to move the hot air away. GPU temps were fine at 750MHz so you COULD OC the CPU and still have reasonable temps. You can always speed up the fans as well. How much would you OC the CPU?
http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/CWT1ibtCyOjyJFYW.huge

I don't want to OC the CPU at all. Only interested in in GPU.

I am curious in how my my i7 will effect OC'ing the GPU compared to the OP's i5.

Ahh. i7 supports HT which does add more heat but seeing that games won't take advantage of it, there shouldn't be much difference. Just keep your eye on temps

I am working on overclocking the 27'' iMac i7.

So Far I am working on ironing out the final specs but so far I am running 760/1080 on the graphics card. Maybe a little better. I just downloaded 3d mark advantage and am going to do some testing with the fans tuned a little better.

I have to do it through smcFanControl because macfan keeps giving me errors.

I'll be back with results as soon as I have them.

Right, im not nickrojasmac, but you might wanna try and install the latest ATI Catalyst Mobility drivers.

Goto, www.ati.com and on the right side you will see a 'Download Drivers' box, in the 'Component Category' make sure to choose 'Notebook Graphics' and in the 'Product Line' choose 'Mobility Radeon Series', 'Product Model' is 'Mobility Radeon HD 5xxx Series'

That might help you out.

People who are having issues with macfan, are obviously not starting cmd as administrator.

FOr the weekend i have had no problem with 815/1110 with a slight voltage tweak. Which is a big step up from 750/1075.

temps are now 80 max after 2 hours playing, also gained up to 18 fps difference in sc2.

That's awesome! What voltage? Which settings were you using (fan-wise and game settings-wise)?

So the max I could hit with stock voltages without any artifacts on my i7 was 760/1080. I had the fans running at 2500 2500 1800 just to be safe and I could
not hear them at all. During the short tests, that I did, the temps seemed reasonable. In Crysis with the resolution set to 1920X1080, all Very high with 8X AA
the temps never really went above 63C.

As far as macfan goes I started it as administrator the first time as I read the entire thread before starting. It keeps giving me an error that says

"Unexpected error. Make sure number of arguments passed matches number of fans in your computer"

Either way using smc fancontrol and setting the speed in leopard and then restarting is not that bad once you are comfortable with
the speed you have chosen.

How did you tweak the voltage? Did you go through Afterburner?

What was the frame rate you got w/ those settings? Was it playable?

Well I guess that kinda depends on your definition of playable. lol.

If i remember correctly I got about 15-20 fps. Thats enough for you to know what is going on and react in most cases.
If I turned the MSAA down to 2 or off then I think it would bump to about 25 fps. I never really broke 30 unless I took
the resolution lower than was acceptable. If I bumped the resolution up to 2560X1440 and turned the MSAA completely
off then I got about 15-20. I'll do a few more tests tomorrow.

I still can't run it at max everything. If I try I get 1-6 fps. Oh well, were getting there.

On a side note I have been playing Star Craft 2 for 9 hours on those settings and my mouse arrow became scrambled because
of the graphics starting to glitch. As soon as I reset the clock speeds it resolved itself. So just take that under advisement.

Had the same problem with the SC2 mouse arrow once.
Henrik, great job. What where the steps you've taken to alter
the voltage? Seems that you can get by with 800+ speeds easily.

So i'm trying to follow all the tests that have been done, but am I right in understanding that overclocking goes way better with the quad i5 than the quad i7, due to the fact that the i7 is hotter to start with? Hhmm, so if that's indeed the case, maybe I should go for the i5 instead, I was about to order the i7...

@thehalokid

First thing you have to do is disable your GPU driver in driver manager. Then restart and download driversweeper (dont know if you can provide links). With driversweeper you can completely remove any trace of the old drivers. Then restart again. Afterwards follow what blomma explained and install the new driver.

I use GPU-Z to monitor my temp , MSI Afterburner to OC my GPU and finallly SMC fan to change my fan speeds.

Update: So I managed to get my temps from 85 degrees to about 75-78 degrees is this acceptable?

running 750/1050 fans at 1800 1800 1600

Henrikrox, what are the final settings you've decided upon with the voltage tweak? And did you just do the voltage tweak through MSI Afterburner?
Thanks for all your hard work!

I can't tweak my voltage through MSI Afterburner :( Would love to test out some more. Any hints? (I've activated unlocking through MSIA preferences)

I ran into that problem too. The only thing that I can figure is that you would have to flash the BIOS. Thats what I have read anyway.

Personally I am not willing to do that because it voids the warranty and can mess up the card.

For anyone interested in Final Fantasy XIV, just a quick test on my 27" i7 2.93 ghz, 8gb ram, 5750, win7 64bit and the official benchmark scores:

TEST 1: 628/1000

HIGH (1920x1080): 1941
LOW (1280x720): 3526

TEST 2: 760/1080

HIGH (1920x1080): 2212
LOW (1280x720): 4026

edit: GPU-Z is saying I'm still on Catalyst 10.4 even though I installed 10.8... maybe fixing this will help some more

edit2: Installed 10.8 properly this time and raised the speeds, helped a little bit. The highest temps I've seen were in the low 70s.

TEST 3: 777/1152

HIGH (1920x1080): 2312
LOW (1280x720): 4186

edit3: played on open beta for few hours while messing with the settings a lot, the temps seemed pretty stable throughout and I didn't notice anything weird... I went with these settings overall:

(VIDEO SETTINGS)
Display Mode: Full Screen
Window Size: 1920x1080
Multisampling: No AA
Buffer Size: Resolution
Shadow Detail: High

(GRAPHICS)
Ambient Occlusion: off (pretty much unplayable with this on)
Depth of Field: off (this puts a bit of stress on the gpu as well, -10 FPS or so)
Disable cutscene effects: off
Texture Quality: High
Texture Filtering: High

Overall, it's not the greatest the game can look but it's definitely decently playable on the iMac 27". I get about 50-60 FPS in not so graphically intense areas (small outer fields, caves, small indoor areas), 30-40 FPS in town settings, sometimes drops to 20 FPS at the lowest when it's a really crowded area.

Thanks for this tests.

I have a question thou. You mentionned you managed to install properly the 10.8 drivers, how did you do it?
I got the same problems, if you install normally the drivers from the site it seems it can't overwrite the default bootcamp ones and you get stuck with them (10.4).

I tried manually update in hardware manager but i didn't find an .inf file in the driver package and got stuck.

Care to explain how to do it?

Thanks!

You need to download the ATI Mobility drivers from their site. You don't have a desktop card in the iMac, its just a mobility card the same as used in Laptops etc.

Yes i know i did that. It's just that as Prokofiev said the installer doesn't seem to overwrite the bootcamp drivers and even after install the driver stays 10.4.

Installed 10.8 properly this time and raised the speeds, helped a little bit

I wondered how Prokofiev did to properly install them as he said :)

Just a question - I've never seen any overclocking software for Mac. Why is this? You would think someone would take the time to make a mac application for overclocking. Is there any reason one does not exist, or is it simply that nobody can be arsed to make one since it's available under bootcamp? :)
