Frankly, you've just owned ******* computers in the past. I've got a mini and it's good as a living room media center or a "mom" computer. And that's pretty much all.

Are you one of those people that think you need a Mac Pro to surf the web and watch youtube? Your mentality tells me you are. Even at the low end the 2.3GHz i5 is far from a "mom" CPU.

When I think mom I think Atom.

or or or....

build your own SFF PC for far less than that...

I hate that Apple essentially forces practical people into less practical solutions -- such as -- "Desktop class hardware is cheaper and performs better than mobile-grade hardware... damnit, do I have to build a hackintosh AGAIN???"

This has happened to me many times.

ALSO, to whoever [-1]'d this, I'd appreciate to know why. Seriously.

Reminds me of another old saying

Another old saying from amateur auto racing:

You can't turn a pig into a thoroughbred. But you can make a really fast pig.

That's why we [-1]-d your post Clive. Same old "fast pig" argument. Zzzzz.

From the auto hot-rodding industry:

Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

Speed is not the issue here, it's physical size. If Apple were to use regular DDR instead of SO-DIMM modules, 16 gigs would cost a fraction of that.

"Fast pig" is a terrible assumption that people on this site use far too often.

I've made the argument many, many times that Apple could make an elegant, modular, small form-factor Mac.

They don't because it's not a profit-pimp.

p.s., do you automatically 1-up your own posts? low-class, sir.

I have a ThinkPad w520 with 16G memory in my lap right now. The cost of the memory through my employer was $33 per 4G or $132 total. :)

I asked for a 15" MacBook Pro but unfortunately needed 16G memory for my work - and the cost of the MBP shot to over $3500 by the time the memory was considered, ergo I got stuck with a ThinkPad.

Sam

you needed 16 gig for your work and considered a MBP which at max is an 8 gig mem so apparently MBP was out of the question unless there's a manufacturer that can provide 16 gig mem ( 2 x 8gig ) for MBP :D that you have considered.
