Well, I just had the problem occur again. I thought uninstalling MenuMeters did the trick - went a day and a half w/o the problem. However, I was able to replicate the problem on a fresh boot up + doing a hard drive speed test.
Has Apple said ANYTHING publicly about the freeze issue?
Has anyone had a simple guaranteed-to-work FIX performed at any Apple store?
Mine will be delivered Oct 31 If no easy fix is announced, I will return it unopened. I'll reorder after fixed machines are available.
Ahhhgkjdiejdnz!!! I'm up at 4 in the morning to write a paper that's due later today and I get the freeze for the first time. I didn't save my progress! I'm so angry right now I don't know what to do. I can't do anything but hard reset. DjemdisjsoeucN!!$@&/@'
Haha! "So old you don't recognize it". Nice. Yeah, I could see that.
I installed the a Verbatim 120GB SSD. Not sure the exact model. And I also have heard the same thing about some SSDs not playing nice with Macs. I've heard someone say it is SSDs with a SandForce controller in them. I'm not sure if mine has that brand of controller.
I'm just going to give it one last shot with the clean install and if that doesn't work, than not such a big deal as I'm definitely due for a refresh anyway. It just would be really nice to squeeze another couple years out of this bad boy.
I called Apple support when I couldn't connect my keyboard to 2010 iMac (trackpad was working fine). So, following directions provided by tech, I did an SMC reset (shut down, unplug, wait 20 seconds, replug, hold power for 10 seconds, then power on). Result...
ONE GIANT BRICK!
(or whatever you might wanna call a 27" unbootable iMac)
After various efforts w/a senior tech, all he could offer was to schedule a genius appointment for me. Suggested the minimum repair would cost $300. Ouch!
That's an especially tough pill to swallow since I'm pretty sure this would have never happened under Mt. Lion.
I'm planning to make the 100 mile round trip to the Apple Store tomorrow. I'm really hoping they'll comp the repair in light of the fact that, as much as I can tell, this is not a hardware issue w/my iMac (or at least it didn't start out that way), but a software issue with Mavericks.
NOTE: After clean install of Mavericks, our mid-2007 24" iMac had the same issue, but eventually i was able to get it to sync to the keyboard again.
You do have a Sandforce controller (2281 model). Not sure if that's the issue, but if the reinstall doesn't work, you might want to consider swapping a different drive in (maybe even an old HD just to test).
Either way, I think we're both going to be blown away by the new MBP's SSD...
Yes, that is a guarantee! 700-800 MB/s! Woo-hoo! And I can finally start using my USB 3 external drives at their full speed.
I'll do a little research on the sandforce thing. At this point, though, I don't know if it makes sense to spend anymore money on the old computer versus just keeping the new one.
I had a random trackpad and keyboard freeze on my 2011 MacBook Pro, I've never had anything like it before. I just put it to sleep for a moment and that seemed to fix it. I wonder if it's software bug that's affecting more than just the new models, or just a coincidence.
I have had my 13" 2.4 8GB RAM 256SSD rMBP for the last 4 days and on the first day it froze but it's been plain sailing after that! No IR thus far and loving this screen!
Besides the freezing issue that seems to be effecting the late 2013 models this machine is a dream! I'm loving it!
Cheers Paul
I just bought my 13" rMBP on Friday and the freeze-up happened to me once that day and again on Saturday. Both required hard resets, and I ended up hear while looking for the problem.
Other than that, though, I absolutely love this machine. If this continues to be a problem, I have every bit of faith that Apple will either fix it or replace it with something where it's not a problem, without any fuss, so I'm not worried.
And it seems like the current work around is just to shut the lid, let it sleep, wake it back up and problem solved. No?
Mine will be delivered Oct 31 If no easy fix is announced, I will return it unopened. I'll reorder after fixed machines are available.
This is an old problem, there's at least one long support thread about it.
My 2011 MBA locks up the same way sometimes, it's related to playing flash videos after hibernation. Not a hardware error, it's too deterministic and widespread.
Apple doesn't seem to care.
