Well, I just had the problem occur again. I thought uninstalling MenuMeters did the trick - went a day and a half w/o the problem. However, I was able to replicate the problem on a fresh boot up + doing a hard drive speed test.

Has Apple said ANYTHING publicly about the freeze issue?

Has anyone had a simple guaranteed-to-work FIX performed at any Apple store?

Mine will be delivered Oct 31 If no easy fix is announced, I will return it unopened. I'll reorder after fixed machines are available.

lol @ apple saying/doing something publicly about an issue. If you yell loud enough and are lucky they'll release a condescending statement about how you're doing it wrong or it's probably a 3rd party issue, an extremely small portion of users are experiencing this and then quietly slip a fix into a minor update.

Ahhhgkjdiejdnz!!! I'm up at 4 in the morning to write a paper that's due later today and I get the freeze for the first time. I didn't save my progress! I'm so angry right now I don't know what to do. I can't do anything but hard reset. DjemdisjsoeucN!!$@&/@'

Did you try typing with your wrists against the screen?

Haha! "So old you don't recognize it". Nice. Yeah, I could see that.

I installed the a Verbatim 120GB SSD. Not sure the exact model. And I also have heard the same thing about some SSDs not playing nice with Macs. I've heard someone say it is SSDs with a SandForce controller in them. I'm not sure if mine has that brand of controller.

I'm just going to give it one last shot with the clean install and if that doesn't work, than not such a big deal as I'm definitely due for a refresh anyway. It just would be really nice to squeeze another couple years out of this bad boy.

You do have a Sandforce controller (2281 model). Not sure if that's the issue, but if the reinstall doesn't work, you might want to consider swapping a different drive in (maybe even an old HD just to test).

Either way, I think we're both going to be blown away by the new MBP's SSD...

I called Apple support when I couldn't connect my keyboard to 2010 iMac (trackpad was working fine). So, following directions provided by tech, I did an SMC reset (shut down, unplug, wait 20 seconds, replug, hold power for 10 seconds, then power on). Result...

ONE GIANT BRICK!

(or whatever you might wanna call a 27" unbootable iMac)

After various efforts w/a senior tech, all he could offer was to schedule a genius appointment for me. Suggested the minimum repair would cost $300. Ouch!

That's an especially tough pill to swallow since I'm pretty sure this would have never happened under Mt. Lion.

I'm planning to make the 100 mile round trip to the Apple Store tomorrow. I'm really hoping they'll comp the repair in light of the fact that, as much as I can tell, this is not a hardware issue w/my iMac (or at least it didn't start out that way), but a software issue with Mavericks.

NOTE: After clean install of Mavericks, our mid-2007 24" iMac had the same issue, but eventually i was able to get it to sync to the keyboard again.

Just got back from Apple Store. They plugged in a USB keyboard & it booted right up. Ran diagnostics. Everything checked out. They were able to reconnect my BT keyboard & I'm back in business... at not charge or change.

So... if you're having BT issues w/your keyboard, before giving up, try plugging in a USB keyboard, then booting up.

Yes, that is a guarantee! 700-800 MB/s! Woo-hoo! And I can finally start using my USB 3 external drives at their full speed.

I'll do a little research on the sandforce thing. At this point, though, I don't know if it makes sense to spend anymore money on the old computer versus just keeping the new one.

Seems to be. This is my speed test (13" retina 256gb/8gb).

Mine freezes about 6 times a day
Funny thing: A mba on display had the same problem and they had to restart.
Shall i return for a new one or is it a software issue?

I had a random trackpad and keyboard freeze on my 2011 MacBook Pro, I've never had anything like it before. I just put it to sleep for a moment and that seemed to fix it. I wonder if it's software bug that's affecting more than just the new models, or just a coincidence.

Same on my 15-inch, Early 2011 MBP - since at least MtLion.

How about your battery life?

I have had my 13" 2.4 8GB RAM 256SSD rMBP for the last 4 days and on the first day it froze but it's been plain sailing after that! No IR thus far and loving this screen!
Besides the freezing issue that seems to be effecting the late 2013 models this machine is a dream! I'm loving it!:D

Cheers Paul

Hey, I got a new one too, same config as yours. How is your battery life though? Are you getting the "up to 9 hours" as they claim? I'm only getting about 6 hours with just normal browsing (reading websites and streaming videos). Phil Schiller claimed that we can watch an entire trilogy one charge. I don't see that happening.

Thanks.

How is your battery life though?

I just bought my 13" rMBP on Friday and the freeze-up happened to me once that day and again on Saturday. Both required hard resets, and I ended up hear while looking for the problem.

Other than that, though, I absolutely love this machine. If this continues to be a problem, I have every bit of faith that Apple will either fix it or replace it with something where it's not a problem, without any fuss, so I'm not worried.

Hey, I got a new one as well .. 13" model .. luckily, I don't have the freeze problem but battery seems to last only for about 6 hours with browsing and streaming videos rather than the 9 hours of browsing/iTunes-movies as they claim. Are you getting good battery life experience?

Thanks.

Mac Freeze: 55 pages of sad MacBookPro users

Folks,

nothing will change with the freeze issue unless there is a LOT of public pressure on Apple. What a shame there is not even a statement acknowledging the problem. 55 pages of sad, frustrated and angry MBP users at the Apple support forum.

Please tweet about it, using #trackpadgate and add your favorite magazines and Mac sites, @tim_cook, @pschiller

Also report the issue here. It just takes a minute.
https://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

- currently Apple support has no solution!
- reinstalling Mavericks, resetting MBP does not help
- if you call Apple support they might tell you they don't know about the problem. Then please refer to 55 (!!!) pages of people complaining about the issue

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5481839?start=750&tstart=0

- I sb. wants to start a story on slashdot, pls mail the link so we can support it here!

- what helped for me (so far!) is connecting a USB stick and setting power save to kick in very late (1h). I did both at the same time, no freezes so far.
- If I wouldn't own a MBP, I wouldn't buy one right now!
- Might return mine tomorrow...

I just received my new maxed out 13 inch Mac book pro last night. It froze twice already, which required me to do a hard reset both times. This is my first Mac and it looks like a great new beginning already.

My 15" rMBP just arrived!!!! Woo-hoo!!! I haven't had any freezes yet (because I've yet to take it out of the box), but either way I'm confident that Apple will release a fix quickly. I feel like they're pretty good about this stuff. People seem to really be hating on them though. Funny. And it seems like the current work around is just to shut the lid, let it sleep, wake it back up and problem solved. No?

That seemed to work for me. I initially tried that, but quickly opened it to no resolve. It seems if you close the lid for a couple mins or so, the keyboard/mouse wakes back up.

I need to pair my bluetooth keyboard/mouse and see if they still work when it freezes.

I 'm returning it. I ordered a 15" to be delivered Nov. 5. The added 20% in cost buys me a LOT more computer. The added 1.5 pounds is not an issue for my usage. I shoulda done it in the first place.

I haven't even owned my 13" Retina Macbook Pro for a week yet and the keyboard/trackpad issue has happened to me twice.

Just arbitrarily browsing the web both times and it freezes. I'm doing nothing out of the ordinary.

First time I did a hard power reset. The second time I waited 15 minutes until my screen went into sleep mode... then it woke up and my mouse and keyboard worked again. NOT a sufficient workaround, obviously.

I noticed that everything on the computer is still working, I'm receiving email notifications, and my network monitor is still flashing, I just can input anything because the keyboard and trackpad aren't responding).

Here are my specs:

13" Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013)
8GB RAM
512GB SSD
$1799 USD vanilla version
Running Mavericks 10.9 build 13A2093

I've already submitted a report to Apple Support and the Apple discussion thread. Hopefully they'll find this info helpful.

I have a 2010 mini on Mavericks with wired keyboard and a trackpad. Haven't noticed any freezing issues.

However I had to repair the disk permissions half way through the install

same here

This is an old problem, there's at least one long support thread about it.

My 2011 MBA locks up the same way sometimes, it's related to playing flash videos after hibernation. Not a hardware error, it's too deterministic and widespread.

Apple doesn't seem to care.

My late 2011 MBP also has video issues where coming out of sleep it does some sort of fast forward frame scramble until it catches back up with where it was. I think a lot of these issues are related to the new power savings and nap, timer coalescing, etc features. I think a sw fix will eventually clear all this up.

Also lately my Skype windows don't remember where they live between restarts. A multi-monitor issue I guess.

Safari also fails the double tap zoom quite often. Once it stops working only a reboot fixes it.
