I have just updated to Sonoma, which at first glance feels nice.
My heavy lifting 3D apps work great, open instantly and files/projects open fast (even from the recents menu).

For some reason Pages and Numbers, the app opens quick, but once I select a file (even a single page document) it takes about 40 seconds to open. If I move over the ‘recent items’ menu item, both apps will hang and need a force quit.
Creating a new document is instant, but when re-opening slow again.

A similar issue on the recents menu in Affinity Photo and Designer ver1.
Files open normally from the open menu, but hangs when selecting ‘recents’.

Similar for me. I updated my Studio to Sonoma so I could get the Logic Pro 11.1, the first that requires Sonoma. I had empty areas in the 'Open recents' section of the file menu, where there should be file names. If I clicked on them you would get a "The document"(null)" could not be opened. The file doesnt exist." error message. Same with Logic Pro and Quicktime. No hangs for me though. Preview app opens files fast but not image files, e.g. jpegs, and has the same Open recents' menu bug. Some Apple apps are still fine though, such as TextEdit.

Update:
Affinity Designer shows the recents tab instantly now, and Photo does show after about 30 seconds and a bit of beachballing. But similar to you the recent list is empty even though I have had files opened.

Sounds like a general Sonoma bug….😖

Mine did that until I noticed I had this turned on in the iCloud drive settings

Been fine after I turned it off.

Seemed to affect some local files as well.

I bypassed Sonoma and installed Sequoia last month. No problems at all, especially the many I’ve read about with Sonoma. Only issue was a “Certificate expired” message which wouldn’t allow me to print. Of course that was my printers manufacturers certificate, which expired the day before my Sequoia install. Love the changes. Small and few differences in some of the drop-down menus, but it’s all good.

I can’t upgrade to Sequoia yet, I have software which doesn’t fully support it yet.

Following up on suggestion elsewhere, creating a new user on your Mac seems to get the recents behaviour and fast loading of documens back to normal. But only whilst you are logged in as the new user. So it's not the OS, but how it's interacting with your main user profile. Is there any way to reset a main profile without completely losing all your settings and associated data/prefs/passwords etc.? Or an easy way to store them safely and then load them back in if you have to wipe them?

My Affinity apps show the recents menu now (although it’s empty) without beachballing.
I did turn off iCloud drive for these apps (even though I didn’t add them in the first place….thanks Apple).

So has it fixed the broken 'Open Recents..." area of the file menus, as well as the slow document loading?

Sorry missed this one the other day. It fixed the slow document loading. I don't use Open Recents. I right click the dock and select a file there or use Spotlight and that is fine.

Small update - I know have this logged with Apple Tech Support. They tried one possible solution (Settings/Control Centre/Recent documents, applications and servers? change to 15 then close Setting and reboot the Mac) but this did not work. So they are escalating to the engineering team and have scheduled a callback at 10am UK time on Tuesday to give me an update or a solution.

Yeah this sounds like a ‘best guess’ from Apple.
All my recents (apps/docs/servers) show from the Apple menu pulldown in finder.
As we’ve stated here, it seems to be app specific i.e. Logic/Pages/Numbers etc, which is nuts as they are all Apples own apps…..🤣

Maybe they all pull from one central folder/database, but all the third party apps do their own thing?

Just upgraded to Affinity V2 (50% off black Friday).
Recents menu shows recent files now, but clicking them does nothing.

Not a biggie, I can use open instead….

More annoyingly APhoto2 takes a couple of seconds to open an image, APhoto1 opens it instantly.
Both versions of ADesigner open a file instantly…..🤔

Edit: more discoveries…open an image the first time takes a few seconds (am I being too picky), open it again it’s instant. For some reason once AP2 has seen the file, the next time there is no delay.

Just registered in order to say I have the same problem! I finally updated my intel Imac 2019 to Sonoma about 2 weeks ago and now Textedit, Pages & Numbers are acting weirdly; long loading times, force quits and "null" files when I click on recent documents. Tried reindexing, safe mode, changing control center settings, nothing works. This is driving me nuts. I should have stayed on Ventura :(

Edit: the only thing that works is when I create a dummy user then everything's fine. But like Rob Francis wrote earlier I don't want to lose everything associated with my main profile. Can you delete your main profile and then create a new one with the same Apple ID/account/Icloud drive etc ? Thanks in advance

So my 10am (UK) Apple call back started well. They rang two hours early (we agreed 10am) and then the call cut off before I actually spoke to anybody. Do thet normally call back or do I need to contact them to ask what is going on?

Update: So Apple called me back (at the correct time) and have confirmed tht the engineers are aware from multiple people that this is an issue. It will be fixed in a Sonoma update, so I would suggest avoiding any workarounds or DIY solutions if you can wait. They say typically a fix for something like this would take around 10 days to implement and release an OS update for. That's not a guarantee, however. Hope this helps.

Top support that from Apple - fingers crossed. Thanks for reaching out to them.

It just started happening again to me today as well.

Many thanks! I sure hope they fix this problem or it is "new admin user" for me with all the risks it entails.

I logged a few issues with the Apple Feedback Assistant on Logic, GarageBand & QuickTime Player to do with Recent Files as I have the same issues - I have met Rob on a previous conversation on this topic :) ... hope to get the OS update comes quickly ... this bug is very frustrating ...
In the console on launchd.log I see many messages about com.apple.scopedbookmarksagent.xpc ... while opening or saving projects in Logic are taking very long time or not even finishing.
