Thanks for clearing that up for me. I had no idea where the deregulation thing was going.

I do hope that the iPhone does get the power to edit documents and spreadsheets and such since it means more people may be interested in getting some bigger smart phone features in an OS update or so.

As for the releasing of the Pre, I am going to take the stance that everyone took before the iPhone SDK. "Whatever problem may exist with the Pre, will be fixed with an OS update, all hardware issues will be resolved by the next revision, and there will be a Pre Nano and a Pre Pro in a year tops!" :D

Great! Bring on the Pre Nano rumors!

No need to be rude. The claim was that having a task manager meant fewer WM sales. Please keep up.

Read my post again I think you missed the point. Yes there were 20 million WM phones sold, but thats across dozens and dozens phones, vs the ONE iphone which is selling in the millions in its one form.

You are obviously not a professional software developer, or you could easily come up with a huge list of apps that are far better done in Java or C than in Javascript (due to performance, tools, APIs, available libraries, etc.).

See if you can find, for instance, any voice recognition written in JavaScript. Or face recognition. Or quality photo filters. Or medical imaging software. Or music synthesizers. etc. etc. etc. (and that's without even mentioning 3D games and other fun stuff that's in the top-100 apps listings...)

Funny, the iPhone doesn't do on-board voice recognition, face recognition, photo filtering or any medical software imaging. Matter of fact, it doesn't do a host of things available on dumb phones given away for free. You're selectively reading and not taking the whole argument in context.

I asked to show me what specific apps on the iPhone is better, minus games that I've already pointed out is done better on Sony's PSP with its hardware buttons and controller.

We're not arguing about C vs javascript as a whole. We're arguing about it on a phone and what Apple has allowed on said phone. Huge difference. The iPhone can be amazing. It's Apple's fault that it's gimp'd. Hence the popularity of jailbreaking. But even that doesn't solve all the issues.

Funny that you think you can dictate which context we choose to speak of....

You obviously have not had to attempt to clean up very many malware & rootkit infested PCs. That's what's out in the deregulated wild on the internet.

.

By deregulating, I mean allowing any type of app/feature one could possibly want to run on their iPhone as long as Apple determines it will not harm/brick your iPhone. This means allowing real gps, mms, tethering, document editing apps, etc.

Currently, the app store approval process's main job seems to be filtering out any features Apple determines its users shouldn't have, not necessarily what could harm your iPhone. Anyways, has the jailbroken community encountered any such malware or spyware?

Given that Apple is a public company, it makes no sense for users to wish for something that would devalue the company's worth to its shareholders.
This is pure conjecture that adding features users want will devalue the company. Matter of fact, Apple is the only company I can think of with enough of a fanbase that will tolerate gimp'd products (one button mouse for years anyone?).

Funny that you have to use arguments out of context to support Apples gimp'd phone.

If we're talking about the Pre vs iPhone, shouldn't we argue within that context?

WHERE did I support the iphone OR the pre?

This all started with me just correcting someone that the pre uses javaSCRIPT, not java. Why you decided to go off on some crusade from that is beyond me.

Palm Pre = Jack, iPhone = Tony

Not that I should get into it, but from an outsider's standpoint NT1440 is right. He just corrected another poster on a very simple term.

Come on guys, hug and make up.

Thank you DS.

It amazes me that people think you are either Diehard apple or diehard anti apple on every single thing mentioned in these forums. I was merely talking about Coding Languages, never even mentioned the iphone but somehow that means I said it was superior?

I think we need to get back to basics and actually READ posts;)

Don't know about docs, but there are around 5 spreadsheet apps with editing capability in the App store, one of which looks like it may actually work.

It's a complicated app, but the hardware shouldn't present a problem, given that Excel was introduced running on an 8 MHz Mac with either 512kB or 1 MB of memory.

.

I just watched the Pre video and I got pretty excited. This is the first true competitor to the iPhone and it might just give the iPhone a run for its money. I started to think I might get one and skip the iPhone...

...then they said it was exclusive to Sprint. :-\

Still this is good, competition ensures that Apple won't rest on their laurels and we'll get a better product as a result.

Assuming apple suddenly decides to make a reactionary product, which isnt the apple way at all....

Kid makes cinnamon muffins and brings them to a week-long bake sale.
Another kid eats the muffin, then comes back the next day with blueberry muffins.
Everybody buys blueberry muffins, because they taste better.

Two days later, first kid comes back with strawberry muffins.

Everybody who has yet to buy a muffin yet buys strawberry muffins because they're better than blueberry muffins.
Everybody who bought blueberry muffins whine and complain about how blueberry muffins are the best.
Everybody who bought only a cinnamon muffin go hungry.

Where do you live that has 4 day bake sales!?

Watching the Pre videos and comparing it and remembering the excitement when the first iPhone was introduced.... there's nowhere near the buzz. Sure the Pre looks like a cool gadget, and it surely addresses many of the iPhone's limitations, but in all honesty, there's no real "WOW" factor with the Pre like with the first iPhone. Unless you can get that, I seriously doubt it will be able to make even a small dent in iPhone sales or adoption.

Killing the iPhone isn't just about the touchscreen and compensating for things the iPhone can't do, it's more about lifestyle than anything else. It isn't just about the features, it isn't just about the app store and it isn't just about the iPod. It's about all of these and more that create a whole iPhone environment. To win people who are entrenched in that environment is going to be a tough task. For example, I have this nice speaker dock for my iPhone that I like very much. I really don't think Palm is going to make their device compatible with my speaker dock and unless they do, it's one more thing that adds to the inertia to switch.

I'm sure the Pre is a great device for some, but the truth of the matter is, it doesn't really have anything compelling. There's no real "killer" deal with the Pre. For the original iPhone, it was the UI. Obviously I could be wrong about this, since I have yet to see one in person, but I think I'm probably right.

Killing the iPhone isn't just about the touchscreen and compensating for things the iPhone can't do . . . It's about all of these and more that create a whole iPhone environment.

Or you can just blow up Apple.
And then, problem solved Palm!

I'll never return to Sprint anything. The ugliest phones in the industry; poorest customer service I've ever witnessed; and the dumbest CSRs on the planet earth. I could never understand what they were saying, and they had no idea where San Francisco was located in relationship to their "outsourced customer service Sweat Shop!" (They kept calling me their "#1 paying customer)

No way. Rogers:
"hi, I'd like to change my voice plan please."
"um, what's your telephone number?"
(says phone number)
"sorry, it says here that that number isn't registered to us."
"whut?"

attempt 2
"hi, I'd like to change my voice plan please."
"so you want to add what value pack?"

attempt 3
"hi, I'd like to change my voice plan please."
(after 20 minutes and a few "okay it's all sets")
I call to confirm...
"I just added a voice plan to my account, can you confirm this?"
"uh, nobody touched your account since you added your iPhone..."
