After really looking at the Palm Pre, I think that it's way too gimmicky and is trying too hard to be intuitive. I think the iPhone is a superior phone, at least with the 3.0 software. Here's why I think this:

-The Pre is clunky and looks like a cheap toy, honestly. The phone is fat and too rounded (it's definitely trying hard to look like the iPhone).
-There is no onscreen keyboard, except for with the phone. I would like this because the physical keyboard looks the same as the Centro's and Palm Pro's, which are the worst keyboards ever.
-The screen is 3.1". Anything under 3.25" is always too cramped.
-I don't like the gesture bar that much. I prefer seeing what action you're doing (not just swiping on blackness and a white dot).
-There are no navigation buttons on the actual display. So you have to use the gesture bar or the drop down menu at the top of the screen. They say that it's there to keep back buttons and stuff from distracting you, but I think they tried too hard. No one likes drop down menus when you can easily put most of that stuff on the screen. The iPhone doesn't have this problem because the screen is so large.
-Multitasking will kill the battery, no doubt.
-The camera looks just as bad as the iPhone's.

I do like the wireless charging station a lot, though. But overall I think this phone is overrated and tries too hard. I really wanted to like this phone, but after 3.0 was announced, I think the iPhone is finally the best phone around.

I have never been a fan of Sprint's whole service, and one supposed iPhone killer is not going to make me switch either.

I remember the Blackberry Storm was supposed to be a good opponent. Same with the G1. I need something extremely amazing to rip me of my Bold and iPhone. I mean, these two phones right here are extremely dominant, in my opinion. :p

Plus, we've only heard of what the Pre does, not enough hands on use by the consumer. It could turn out to be a bomb.

Then it's obviously it's NOT trying to look like an iPhone. It reminds me more of one of the winners of a Japanese concept show last year, with more of a rounded pebble shape.

Agreed that it's nice to have both options available.

Seriously, you're saying that about 0.15" diagonal?

Other phones that have even larger screens could no doubt say the same about the iPhone :)

Even Apple prominently placed an example gesture bar in their infamous "iPhone" patent. Do you think they're wrong as well?

The whole point is to NOT have to cover up what you're viewing, which is what on-screen gestures usually do.

Multitasking will kill the battery, no doubt.

Multitasking works fine on other phones, or even jailbroken iPhones.

For that matter, the iPhone multitasks already out of the box, with iPod, email and phone apps running in the background. So will the notification process. Other apps, like Safari, stick around until the memory is needed.

even if the palm pre cooked me breakfast in the morning and transformed itself into jessica alba in the evening, you could not pay me to sign a contract with Sprint. Reception and coverage is awful, roaming? seriously?

okay so maybe if it transformed into Jessica Alba...but even so you get my point

LMAO!!! ahahahah

I always like reading your posts but:
1. I have to see the pre in person and hold it to make any kind of judgement but comparing it to a japanese concept cell phone doesn't help. They're cell phones always look a little whacky even though they're packed with features.

2. I would say that the gesture bar is a good idea if not for just the implementation of more gestures.

3.The screen, again, I would have to see in person to make any judgements.

4. With background processes, Apple's own products seem to do fairly well. I
have a jailbroken ipod touch 2g. When I tried to add a wallpaper, use backgrounder for pandora and web browsing, the ipod started to choke. I don't know if it's because these apps weren't natively written that problems started to occur. I've never tested battery life because I'm always near a place to charge. Palm also is apparently worried about this which is why they introduced their own PNS yesterday.

Looking at the pre videos, it seems to be a better phone than the iphone but it will not be able to do every thing that the iphone can. It poses an interesting question: Would you prefer the jack of all trades or the master of one? Everybody will answer that differently.

The truth is nobody really knows anything about the pre because no one (except the guy from engadget on Jimmy Fallon) has touched it. It could be just like the videos or far worse. I will say this though: Palm's time is running out. It is extremely important that phone is released before iphone hardware 3.0 comes out or they're DOA. They're so close to being broke that it's actually shocking. At last estimate they have $200 million in the bank.

iphone is great but AT&T SUCKS and OVER PRICED!!!! I pay close to 100 bucks for ****** and slow 3G (America's fastest 3g network, BS!!!). For 100 bucks on Sprint you can get unlimited everything.

I'm waiting for the Pre to come out and see if it live up to its hype. My work phone is Sprint and data is faster and the call quality is better than AT&t here in So Cal.
