Palm has posted a high quality video clip of their Palm Pre CES presentation online at http://palmone.r3h.net/downloads.palm.com/ces.mov
I will say that it does look a little iPhone-esque in some areas, (which is obviously what I was pointing out) but overall, it looks like a very solid device on it's own.
My personal preferences lean more towards this then the iPhone, a lot of which has to do with my experiences with my iPod Touch.
I only see one problem with this phone
"Pre developers will develop using browser technologies including CSS, HTML and XML along with special APIs to access the hardware features of the new device"
I don't really fancy (X)HTML and CSS for applications
The lead product designer for the touchscreen has also left and formed his own company making touchscreen devices based on Android:
Touch Revolution company
Sounds like the iPhone developers needed more freedom. And Apple is infamous for overworking people... relying on the "coolness" factor to keep employees even after Jobs has subjected them to one of his temper tantrums.
No matter how much you guys try to spin it, the Pre is a worthy competitor and will hopefully make Apple step up their game
Plus the release time is interesting. If this comes out in the spring, then wouldn't that pit apple in a great spot to release a quad-core phone running snow leopard and give us stronger video usage etc. Plus a usable battery?
You don't have to be so bloody rude to people using MMS.
but don't you really think you look stupid on the bus, when whirling around your phone? Trust me, you look bloody stupid.
It made you the mindless brainless sheep Apple wants you to be.
Especially when they drop their delicate iPhone and it shatters to pieces, then they head right back to the Apple store to buy another one full price.
Because they shatter under pressure. My brother in law dropped his from his shirt pocket...... DONE! Not only did it crack but while he looked at it in shock and awe the crack got bigger.
He went out and paid full price for another phone...![]()
I mean, why does it bother you?

It bothers me when a thread gets flooded with people that bash a product simply because it's not an iPhone.
It bothers me when someone has to ask why it bothers me when me being bothered doesn't bother them.
No offense, but like Powerfull Mac said, to each their own. It bugs me when iPhone users blindly bash and blindly compare everything to the iPhone and scream that the iPhone wins simply because it's Apple, even when something better DOES actually come along.
I started another thread about the lack of design at Apple, and the only thing people could say is, "I love OSX! so Apple wins!" completely negating the topic with blind devotion.
I like OSX, I love the concept of the iPhone. I actually like iTunes and Mobile Me. But I can look other places and see what I and others are missing instead of trying to justify why I and others don't need certain things or can change my life to fit a product.

The biggest problem with this post is: you think that because Apple or iTunes or the iPhone is different in some way from other devices/services, it means that you're "missing something" and by definition the other object is in fact better because it "has something" that the iPhone/tunes/does not.
Thats simply ridiculous. There exist things called, "priorities" & "trade-offs"
McNamee said:“The old Palm OS has run out of gas,” he said. “Apple’s Mac OS X is about eight years old, and the BlackBerry platform is more than a decade old. Palm’s platform is brand-new. A new platform gives us the opportunity to innovate the way Google goes. This product is just the starting point.”
I understand.
Again it's none of my business but thanks for the reply.
I havn't had as much hands on experience with the iphone as most here have since I have been waiting (and in contract) and getting one soon so I guess I havn't really caught up with the everyday user quirks but I'm sure they will come.
Just seems like ever since I joined MR that there is A LOT of folks that bash the iphone, I understand it has problems but as far as I know its the best damn thing out "right now". I just read about a lot of unhappy people on these boards, I thought this phone was a GOOD thing...!...?
Anyways, I welcome any and all competitors to the game. Maybe apple will pay attention and give everyone what they want.
Thats not a bad thing at all. Thinking native apps are in any way superior to webapps is nonsense.
Most of the webapps previously (and still) available for the iPhone work just as well comparable native apps. Especially any of the apps that depend on connectivity for function.
Yes!
And what I am saying is that you get this primarily from iPhone users.
It may be missing MMS and copy/paste, but when another phone is missing an Apple logo, or an app store, or Safari people don't want to give it any credit.
Look how many people instantly wrote the Pre off simply because it had a keyboard or was made by Palm. Even if the OS is simply a step forward.
p.s. It's actually okay to ask. I was being somewhat of a d0ucheb@g then. Sorry.
It is nonsense comparing jacked up webpages to full compiled applications. There is absolutely no web app that can compare to the experience of a native app because your significantly limited by "power" and by the lack of ways to do interface animations. Native apps use less resources, and that is a important thing on a mobile platform, where resources are highly limited. They can reach down closer to the machine and extract better performance. Even with webkit's CSS Animations, animations in the Safari browser are poor and choppy. The Pre, being based on webkit, can expect similar or slightly better performance. Interface animations have become a critical part of the mobile experience, so writing them off is not acceptable either.
Just because you can store them locally does not mean they will miraculously gain performance. As of iPhone 2.1, you can create fullscreen web apps with a "manifest" file that will cache any and all of the resources in your app, essentially leaving them installed on your device. I would know because I developed one for personal use. Thing is, they run just the same as in the browser. Slow, laggy, and not a native user experience.
Why is it when there are features on products competing with Apple products that lack said features, people here are quick to point out that they are "not necessary" or passé. That's really not for any one person to say. Some people need features for business reasons, not for personal preference. Besides, if the feature is standard on smart phones, Apple should have it too. The omission of a feature doesn't make it unnecessary or outdated.
I think there is legitimate reason for what you describe. iPhone users, while annoying, have the right to criticize any else because there simply isn't anything else that even comes close to whole package that is the seamless integration of iPhone/OSX/Push Services/iTunes/App Store.
This Palm Pre, while it may be able to claim similar features, is simply an attempt to "catch up" to the iPhone, and it still falls far short. Consumers rightfully should be annoyed by products that attempt to "catch up" to another because its obviously a ham-handed attempt at money grabbing.
There is no attempt at greatness here. Just an attempt to mimic well enough to covert some sales. That in itself is recognizable and "insulting" to users who understand the difference between real innovation and mockery.

This is what I am talking about.
Have you looked at the phone's UI?
Having been using the UI of the touch and iPhone for two years now it's safe to say that the UI is the ONLY benefit of the iPhone and Touch.
Palm has taken their OWN UI which debuted in 95 and Apple did copy aspects from, and revamped it to make it more desktop like and fluid. It is simply a better OS.
Simply writing the Pre off as a knock off is blind devotion.
And to say that Palm is mimicking greatness while Apple strips down $2800 machines for consumers is a joke. The Pre doesn't claim similar features, it has the same features their other smartphones have had for years which Apple still does not have.
Seriously!
The parallels to the desktop OS X and this 'new' OS is stunning.
