But Apple does something that no one can do, they can take simple things, technology available for years and they put it together like no one can. Of course they power it with software and software they do very well. What Steve Balmer said about iPhone? How reacted other vendors (Nokia, HTC etc.,?) and how marker looks now? Apple really reinvented the phone, iPhone is not perfect by all means, but it pushed the industry and that's the fact.
And Palm (it seems) has proven that Apple isn't the ONLY company that can do all of that ... ;)

same ol' same ol'

Several key iPhone developers left Apple to join Palm beginning in the summer of 2007. Even after that point, several individuals at Palm, including Ruby himself, but also lower-level individuals, aggressively attempted to recruit top iPhone developers to Palm. Most attempts failed but a few succeeded.

Steve Jobs was furious, but given California employment law, there was little he could do.

Thus, it is obvious that the Pre was influenced by top Apple recruited talent, including of course Mike Bell, Apple's former VP of hardware, with knowledge of Apple roadmaps years in advance, who took that knowledge and left for Palm. Fred Anderson, though not on the engineering side, after being made the scapegoat for the stock scandal, left Apple for Palm's board, also with knowledge of Apple plans.

Unless I'm mistaken, the only reason Palm is still around is because of Apple. Seems like I read somewhere the Palm OS and all the writing recognition was bought off the Newton after Jobs axed that project. Congratulations Palm, you were able to build a smartphone slightly better than the iPhone. You sure are way better than Apple.

I think the phone looks "ok". Im not really a fan of its egg shape.

I think the major complaint is that Apple hasnt listened to anyone about their phone. It would take them a week to write an MMS program, maybe a couple of months to create copy paste. Simply allowing turn by turn GPS is free of charge and would make the iphone the most powerful hand held device ever made.

I really dont get their marketing scheme. AT&T is an iPhone killer away from Apple losing the phone market. Dont bet against another company making something even better thatn iPhone. At least we can hold out some hope!
You got the party that caused the issue on your first paragraph. Apple practises oppression to their customers. And AT&T enforces this same oppression (to apple) and Apple abides. Thats why.
Thats the American way, ain't it ?.

Well, just for the record.

Currently I'm a "iPhone Wannabe Fanboy" since I do not YET own an iphone but will shortly.

But I'm not one to count out this Palm or any other phones that may come out soon and step up to the challenge. I love innovation and seeing new toys announced and I love that this new Palm may make apple a little uneasy because I think they need their eyes opened a little.

That's all. ;)

Same here. In all reality if the iPhone was on Sprint's or VZW's network I'd own one. It being on AT&T was just too many things I'd have to sacrifice.

The Pre looks good and all, but how many phones out there are so easy to use that even cats can use them? :D Here's my cat watching a video on my iPhone:

That's actually one of the biggest things I don't like about the Pre. :D

Not the cat thing, the screen size. I don't mind it being small and considered an actual phone instead of a brick but I would have simply loved a #.5" --> 4" screen on this thing so I can watch movies and such. But I guess I do it just fine on the 2" screen on my Classic.

Your point? Especially since a lot of OSX was taken from others.

And advancements are advancements, even if taken from others. IMHO... that is.

Just watched Pre demo on Youtube. Damn phone is slow as hell. Web browsing is terrible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRnlzbuLRwM

No its not. Its just as fast or faster. Watch the HQ presentation and features that the OS and built in apps can do. It simply blows away the iPhone OS and core applications. You can't even search on the iPhone, heck you can't do anything really useful except buy stuff at iTunes easily.

This is a bad a$$ phone, and to say its being released in SIX months. Do you know how many more improvements are going to be made to this phone? Apple really needs to step it up this time. And I saw a list earlier that someone made about the features the Pre will have compared to the iPhone, and I was . Apple better bring their "A" game this summer.

Pre has these features that the iPhone don't have:

- gps navigation
- multitasking
- open sdk
- notifications
- wireless charger
- copy & paste
- bt tethering/ad2p
- usb mass storage
- microusb2
- mms
- 3mp cam with led flash
- nice cases/accessories available @ releasedate
- exchangable battery
- keyboard
- adobe flash
- universal search

APPLE, better be on it this summer!:apple::rolleyes:

Thanks guys for the links to Palm Pre on youtube.
I just finished watching them and I conclude Palm Oggly SUCKS!!!
Hey, at least I got myself to watch it. So, don't frag me.

I just realized something. This phone is being released in July. Do you think the new iPhone will be out then? Seems like Palm wants to go head to head with the iPhone this summer.

A lot of kool-aid drinkers in this thread...

Anyway as an audio professional I can't afford to have a iPhone with it's extremely noisy cell radio... Several of my coworkers with iPhones have to turn of their phones or put them in airplane mode while they're working around FOH or backstage otherwise you'll hear the 'GSM buzz' loud and clear all over the place... CDMA is my only option, and so far I am loving the Pre...

So you put it in the same league as the iPhone?

These guys are mixing it themselves. I am sure many a Sprint customer will hear the babblings of these guys and be suckered into getting a device that may not have been for them.

But when you say things like that you forget to look at the beauty of the device.
I am relatively new to the apple community. What makes me laugh is how bad windows is, how many threads are there about boot camp. Windows sucks, there is a very active thread about windows 7.

Palm pre sucks because it's just another knock off that has the features the iphone hasn't incorporated and people want.

Copy and paste = tedious
MMS = stillborn antiquated technology
Push = can't get push to work threads

My take
Dev team and other 3rd parties = better apps and making for a far more useful phone

Apple = yesterdays hardware technology in a pretty box with a very good OS at a huge premium. (oh this is gonna come back at me)

iPhone = king of the hill ( how much longer? ) who has gone deaf

Palm, blackberry, LG, Nokia, and Samsung may not be the "iPhone" but it seems the target of Sprint and Verizon is to maintain retention of their customers. I beleive the second generation of the pre and blackberry storm may draw some serious interest, regardless of the network.

Get an iPod, it does this better and gives way better battery life. Yes, ignorance is bliss sometimes ...

iPhone does voice and SMS poorly compared to most cheap phones today. I cannot even use its speakerphone to conference all with 4 people in the room. A cheap SE handset with speakerphone does this function very well. No complains from the distant party.

I have two iPods, no need for another one. I came from using a Palm phone before I bought the iPhone. Sounds like you are being ignorant by stating that I am for stating the reasons I love my iPhone. So I am supposed tp jump all over the new Pre and I can't like my iPhone for the reasons I said I do? Grow up please.

Why is a KEYBOARD a "feature" that the iPhone doesn't have? The iPhone has a keyboard, and a goddamn good one. Put a physical keyboard on the iPhone and I will personally jump through security and bitch slap whoever the CEO of Apple is at the time.

And Palm (it seems) has proven that Apple isn't the ONLY company that can do all of that ... ;)

Yet to be determined ;) What you can't take away from Apple it is intergration ;)

Without strong developer base Palm will be left dead in the water and looking forward how popular iPhone is i just don't see it coming. Android is out for how long?, but basically it was one day event. By the time Palm Pre is released i'm sure Apple will strike back ;)

APPLE, better be on it this summer!:apple::rolleyes:

Are all those things absolutely necessary? (said with a pinch of sarcasm)

If it has a better browser than the iPhone, I will switch. The iPhone iPod functionality sucks (try fast forwarding through a 5 hour MP3 sometime if you don't believe me), I like the idea of a swappable browser, and I like the idea of an open development platform as well as flash.

90% of what I care about in a smart phone is the browser. The best browser (provided the phone works decently, which has never been an issue for me) will win my business.

There are a lot more web developers out there than iPhone developers.

Just sayin'.

Yes, if you want to get some real business done on an iPhone, but instead we have apps like iFart, that's still number 1 in the App Store for weeks now!

I don't see many or hardly any celebs with iPhones. I bet you one of the main reasons is the lack of a physical keyboard.

This also implies for business users, too.

I agree, iPhone keyboard is very good. Not using plastic keyboard Apple got rid of quite few big design problems. I don't have iPhone, but i have iPod Touch 2G for 2 months and i type crazy fast now. Speaking about Palm Pre there is a problem with plastic keyboard watch the demo and look how close to the edge the first line of letters is. I'm not sure how comfortable it will be to type when you have big fingers and etc.
