Reports about Panther 7B28 appear to note extensive bug fixes and stability improvements. No major new features are reported, but ongoing cosmetic tweaks, and fixes. Specific changes noted from 7B21:

- 'Selected' Finder icons have different appearance
- Welcome/Registration screen appears in a Window
- Mail bug fixes (previously would sometimes hand while retrieving mail)
- Safari 1.1 v90 (from v89)
- Expose smoother

'selected icons'

Don't be silly and spread false rumors, no-one knows when it's coming, because this time Steve Jobs said "before the end of the year" instead of "end of September".

I never liked the new icon selection, but that's a great improvement. Still don't like it, it looks kind of childish (as in we don't know how to use our computers) but I suppose it's something you get used to.

Expose smoother? It's already damn smooth, I wonder if it'll get even better by GM (I guess yes due to Quartz/OpenGL/Graphics Driver improvements). But there's one thing smooth isn't, and that's...snappy

expose may be smoother on slower systems maybe? i hope it's like that because some of expose won't run on my iMac. i guess my graphics card isn't fast enough.

it will probably be releaed or announced for release at Apple Expo Paris.
s long as it's before october i will be fine:)

heh.... actually other rumors have hinted at September.

Have they confirmed the price? I bought Jaguar, would I have to buy Panther or there will be an upgrade version (although I really don't like buying upgrades, cause you have to install one and then upgrade it...).

I know that amazon.de is already accepting pre-orders for panther, but not amazon.com...

Thanks

Rafael

I think September was one of the original target dates. However, at WWDC they (or Steve Jobs) said "...before the end of the year." To me, that sounded like a slip in the schedule, so I don't expect that we'll see Panther for several more months.

about the selected icons: as long as a selected icon doesn't slow down older systems by draging it around, it's okay with me.
new os'es do look like lego or playmobile - very friendly for children (especially xp:(
i miss somehow more minimalism in the appereance of osX, too.
things like expose look and feel very clever indeed!!!
and after all, i want to hug this panther :)

Woohoo, thanks arn for the screenshot.

What is in the Welcome/Registration Window now? So long as Apple never goes the way of MS with Activating Windoze and Serial Numbers, I'll be happy...

Looks smoother to me...

Welcome registration

I believe it is the same Welcome/Registration screen we have always had. Just in a window rather than taking over the whole screen.

I cannot wait for Panther to be out almost as much as I cannot wait for a new PowerBook. By the time they do release the new PowerBooks, Pather will be preinstalled from the look of things. That'd save me $80 in the education discout of upgrading later, so perhaps there is an upside to PowerBooks being so delayed. :)

I've posted this before, and it's just my opinion, but I think people are taking the "before the end of the year" too literally. They said the same thing about iTMS for Windows: "before the end of the year". This, to me, is simply Applespeak for "we're not going to tell you, in advance, when product X will be released. It's part of the secrecy that Apple has always adhered to with regard to product launches.

Considering how good the latest build looks, there's no way on earth it's going to take another 4 months to get this puppy out the door. I'm thinking two more seedings, tops, and the second one could very well be the GM, or very close to it. So, mid-September looks likely to me.

They also changed the animation that goes with all the flying "Welcome" text.

Does it still have the same Air tune playing at the begining of the registration?

Air tune!?

Its krüder & dorfmeister thank you very much ;)

why 10.2.7 if shipping soon?

I would love to believe that Panther will ship in September. But why the hard work for 10.2.7 to get the G5's out the door and 2 weeks later ship Panther where all those who pre-ordered will have to pay 19.99 for a free update. Seems like a good way to piss off people.
I think 10.2.7 will make it into late August G5's and Panther will undergo a few more revisions and make its debut in October or Novmber once the initial G5 are out there and perhaps, after a new powerbook rev. Of course, at THAT rate it would be next July..... <sigh - year of the laptop....>.

I just cannot see why 10.2.7 which is still not GM would com out so soon before 10.3 and shipping G5 machines.

It's definitely an Air song.

I don't know where you got the K&D idea.

Unless it was a joke :)

Have a listen for your self. It's on the Moon Safari album.

Well 10.2.7 is not only for G5s from what I understand. It is just an update to Jaguar that can accommodate the 64bit architecture of the G5 machines. Maybe I am wrong though. And in any case in Paris they may just announce the date of shipping rather than release the product. IMHO I am not so sure that Panther will be available by mid september anyway. I dont know about 7B28 but the apps in 7B21 are a long way from stable.

Yes, there are non-G5 changes in 10.2.7. It's mostly updates to i/o components (F/W, USB, etc.).

7B28 appears to me to be much improved, compared to 7B21.

7B28

Keep in mind what the B in 7B28 means.

Beta.

But then again, if it were *almost* done, as in ship in a few weeks, it would be 7FC17 (or something like that... Final Candidate)...

So no, Panther is not imminent yet.
