Yes, that's how I got my PD7, through the VMWare competitive upgrade (also $29) and I have my new PD8 serial/link from Parallels (came in this morning).

Awesome, I'm going to try the same thing. Did you need to install v7 and activate it, or did they just send it automatically because of your purchase?

I did! In fact, I had someone PM about just that. I don't know for sure, but there is a registration during the install, so I'm thinking that process is what puts you in the free upgrade notification queue. I guess that makes sense that the person registering it becomes the license holder.

FWIW, I installed my PD7 about 3 weeks ago, not sure what kind of lead time it takes (though I figure it's mostly automated so probably < 24 hours).

Contact them. I missed it by a week last year with the Lion upgrade. They gave me a copy of 7 free.

Cheers for that surf2snow1 just did live chat support and then got following response.

Thank you for contacting Parallels Customer Support.

What I can do from my side is that I can initiate a full refund on your purchase and provide you with the activation key.

Per the Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Tech Guarantee, one is eligible for no-charge upgrade only if Parallels Desktop 7 was purchased on or after July 25, 2012. However we would like to make an exception for you as our loyal customer and provide you with the no-charge upgrade key to Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac.

So just waiting for notifaction of refund as i already paid for upgrade and the new key.
So happy customer here cheers parallels :D

Downloading mine now. Lets see how games run. :)

You just aren't familiar with Linux.
KDE is the most popular UI.
I'm pretty familiar with Linux. I have a Ubuntu-running PC and have dabbled in most of the biggest distro's since Mandrake, SUSe and Redhat were the main go-tos. KDE is hardly "the face of linux". Many major distro's still don't use it as default.

We should be good for all ya who bought it from newegg

The Parallels crew seem to be kidding me. I filled out the form for the free upgrade from Parallels 7 to Parallels 8, because I bought mine sometime recently (okay, 3 months ago, through student discount 'cause I'm broke :p ). I figured, what the heck, right? Surprise surprise, they did send me an activation key... for Parallels 7. Apparently, to them, I had purchased P6. Best part: when I try to download the P8 trial from their site, it downloads P7. Are they joking their paying costumers?

Oooh good thing I checked back here! I skipped the registration when I installed it for haste reasons. :) I just registered now so I can resume checking emails every 20 minutes.

Thanks

FYI

Got my Newegg order on Friday and sent in the info to get the P8 key. Received it yesterday and am all setup.

Wonder if I can dump the P7 disk onto eBay now?

If its unopened they sure you can. You get a new license for 8.

It's an upgrade key, not a new license. Last time I got the upgrade from Parallels (rather than buying a new copy outright) I had to enter both the key for the old version and the upgrade key to activate.

It took some sleuthing, but I found the Parallels Knowledge Base article on this:

Have you or anyone who did the NewEgg deal, get their new keys for version 8 yet?

NM, re-read it, you got your new key, didn't get that the first time. Did you just fill out the form or did you contact a human?

I would think at the very least the old PD7 wouldn't be valid for a 2nd upgrade[?] Just seems like a lot gyrations for very little return.

Looks like this member, a few posts up:

My PD8 has been spectacularly stable, not a single hang, issue, startup issue, etc. Also getting pretty good battery life, my old PD6 install was horrible on battery (though for the most part I'm not using a VM while I'm on battery).

PD8 was well worth the $29 to upgrade from PD6 :)

The copy has to be registered to get the upgrade price, so if Parallels has decent databases they could easily limit to one upgrade per copy.

Parallels 7 from newegg is an eom copy not an upgrade. The parallels 8 code is also an oem code not an upgrade.

The only reason you might have trouble if you sell p7 is that it's code has already been registered to you to get p8.

Have you done this and are sure? The website says you get an upgrade key. That's what I got the last time I did an upgrade.

Agreed this is also a problem. The p7 is "used" not new at this point.

It's been a week since I got my Parallels 7 from Newegg and submitted my request for the upgrade key to Parallels. Nothing back.

Has anyone received their upgrade key yet?

Yes I do. It took me 1 day. There is something wrong with your case. Contact parallels support for sure.

unlike Apple who want you to fork out $1000s every year for a new mobile phone, Tablet and PC ?

That's no comparison at all. A better one is: "unlike apple who wants you to fork out 20-30 a year for an OS update".

Also: finding something similar does not make it less sucky, does it?!

If apples "OS Updates" for Mac OSX contained anything more than slight graphical tweaks id be happy to pay more...the OS upgrades are about the ONLY thing apple price realistically for what they contain.
