As far as I know, the old ones are compatible with the newer versions of OS X. At least that's how it was with Mavericks. The system requirements for Desktop 9 state "OS X 10.9 Mavericks or later, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or later, OS X Lion 10.7.4 or later, or Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.8 or later."

You see, you have that backwards. Yes, the current Parallels version runs on older OS versions. But the older versions of Parallels do not run on more recent OS X.

Which is what has turned this into essentially an annual subscription model, for anybody who adopts Apple’s next release.

These product launch videos with this cutesy music are seriously tired.

LMAO - I thought it was just me. Whenever you want to launch anything, basically put in an acoustic guitar and have lots of colours and words flying around. Hipster marketing 101

Wow, I literally just purchased Parallels Desktop 9 slightly over a month ago. This sucks. :(

You might be able to upgrade to version 10 for free, have a look on this link:

http://www.parallels.com/techguarantee2014/

It mentions:

"Customers who purchased and activated a copy of Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac from the Parallels Online Store or an authorised reseller on or after August 1, 2014 through October 15, 2014, are eligible for an upgrade to the next version of Parallels Desktop for Mac at no charge, subject to certain conditions"

So, while Apple has started giving me free upgrades every year, Parallels is going down the path of forcing me into what amounts to an annual subscription. On three different machines. I don't need "new features" from my virtualization software. I just need you to support what I've already paid for.

Jack wads.
I migrated to vmware fusion due to parallels licensing model and yearly upgrade fees. I'm much happier

you are wrong. it's a 2 year cycle. last years version always gets a patch for the new OS. you can always skip a version.

still not ideal, but you save half of the money.

Now you are just talking stupid.

Now you are just talking stupid.
Every time we talk about Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office 360 there's a great wailing cry from the masses: We don't want subscriptions! Let us buy what we want, when we want it!

Yeah. What a bunch of BS that is.

'Cause here's that and guess what? Still a bitch-fest.

I got out of the Parallels upgrade game years ago when I realized what they were doing. I'm using VirtualBox now. It's nowhere near as good, but it's enough for my limited needs.

I'd be willing to pay for Parallels again, if the included the promise for 2 OS X compatibility updates.

I'm not paying for any more of their "upgrades". Had I known that it was going to cost me 100 to 200 bucks a year for their software on my machines I never would have bought it to start with.

Back to Bootcamp for the very few things i need to do in Windows, or maybe I'll buy and older PC for next to nothing.

Virtualbox boots up Windows pretty quickly (certainly faster than BootCamp) and it's free.

Why are these updates required?
If you wanted to upgrade from Mountain Lion to MAvericks you had to upgrade Parallels to version 9 to still use it as version 8 7 would not run on Mavericks. THey even had an agressive marketing/email campaign telling us you needed to upgrade to Parallels 9 on Mavericks. So there was no choice if you wanted to make the free upgrade from ML to Mav

Edit: I initially said version 8 would not run Mavericks. In fact it was version 7 I was thinking of. AS I did not have version 8 I don't know what was the story with it.

Parallels 9 will currently not start under Yosemite unless you first enter a command via a terminal window. This problem started when DP6 was launched.

If you want to upgrade to the latest version of OS X.

They're not, it'll be 6 months+ before they update ver9 to work on Yosemite. People don't buy their software to use half the year.

Version 9 already supports a Yosemite host OS: http://blogs.parallels.com/consumer...ac-gets-update-for-host-support-with-yosemite

Given Yosemites a beta things may break as changes are made in the future, but I wouldn't say they aren't supporting the OS.

I upgrade every even, other version now as soon as the new version comes out meaning I am never buying mid product cycle. Have just purchased a key for version 10, upgrading from 8.

It means paying for an upgrade every two years and ensures that I have current OS support. I can live with that.

$79.99 new/$49.99 upgrade for what is essentially a one-year rental, as another upgrade will be required next year. What a ripoff.

.. which is why Parallels should consider a monthly subscription option with additional (and possibly cheaper) annual commitment plan. This would allow you to get all the updates over the term of the subscription and not hit in the wallet in one go whenever a new major upgrade is released.

Given that the likes of Microsoft, Adobe and Google (Apps for Business) have gone down this route, and many other companies are following suit, it seems that SaaS is becoming the new norm for paying and using software.

Just my tuppence. And no, I'm not upgrading to Parallels 10 as it's only been a few months since I bought 9.

$50 is dinner out. The Parallels people have a great product that they support with annual upgrades to take advantage of the latest OS X features. I'm happy to pay for that kind of work and commitment.

Just completed my video review of Parallels Desktop 10 and it's an awesome release you can see the video here http://youtu.be/dy5eKs-dHG0

Skeeter...nice review, but you kept pronouncing as OS X as "Oh Es Ex" rather than "Oh Es Ten". This reduces your credibility as a reviewer.

i ditched Parallels years ago after it became apparent any time Apple upgraded the OS Parallels was going to charge for a version to work on it all the while never fixing what was broke in previous versions yet promising it was in the new one.

I never tried Parallels but is it worth it?

It depends on your needs. I'm an IT major - I use numerous Windows only apps everyday. Parallels allows me to run Windows 8.1 without having to restart my Mac every time. For me, yes it's worth it. Both Parallels and VMware offer free trials, I highly recommend you take advantage of them before buying anything.

ripoff

What a ********* ripoff! I have been using parallels since version 5, and paid upgrade fees every year just for the support of the latest OSs, another 49.99 now? Oh ****** off parallels! Im done with this.

And when you bought Parallels 9, you paid for Yosemite support, right? Riiight....
