No more Parallels for me.

I am sick of this $50 'upgrade' each year. I will not be using Parallels after Yosemite comes out. Every 'improvement' they make has minimal value to me and I hate that they are forcing me to upgrade. I will use anything else and try to influence my friends to avoid Parallels.

you are wrong. it's a 2 year cycle. last years version always gets a patch for the new OS. you can always skip a version.

still not ideal, but you save half of the money.

Indeed, same update cycle I've been using for a few years. So, since I skipped 9, it's likely I'm going to get this.

Also, you all complain about a $49 upgrade. By some of the weirdest conversion rates, I have to fork up 509 Swedish Krona for it, which is about $75. So a 50% increase in price. Not even Apple is that greedy with the conversion rates.

I've taken to the point where for me, I'll hold off as long as the product works. I'm on Vmware but the same situation occurs, every time OS X is upgraded we see a new version of VMware. I'm on an older version, so I've skipped that last one. I'm ready for the newer one at this stage.

$79.99 new/$49.99 upgrade for what is essentially a one-year rental, as another upgrade will be required next year. What a ripoff.

Don't you think they should be paid for their work? I'm sure you do.

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade. Parallels 9 still works

I never tried Parallels but is it worth it?

Depends on what you want from it.

Gaming has at least in the past been a bit shaky. Some games works really well, almost unnoticable that you are emulating. Others won't work at all. 3D games, like FPS games, has a known problem with the mouse, making the camera spin around if you run them in full-screen mode.

For desktop apps, like Office or web design and you quickly want to check if it looks good in IE and so, it's really great.

Upgraded to 10 today.

It seems much faster than version 9 running a Windows 8.1 Pro VM.

So I'm happy with 10 so far.

Does it work, if I buy a V9-Key via ebay to save some bucks and then upgrade it to V10?
Or is there an alternative? I am currently using V8.

I am from germany, V10-upgrade costs 49€, that is like 65$...

I was quite impressed with the speed boost.

So if speed is important to you then maybe it will be worth the $49.99.

So, while Apple has started giving me free upgrades every year, Parallels is going down the path of forcing me into what amounts to an annual subscription. On three different machines. I don't need "new features" from my virtualization software. I just need you to support what I've already paid for.

Jack wads.

Use a professional product! VMware Fusion! One key allows me to install it on all 4 of my Macs.

What are the system requirements for this thing? I want to run it on a 10.6.8 host.

I'm with you on these upgrade fees... I use VMWare Fusion and they want like $40/year for their new upgraded version. I just want a virtualized Windows for a few applications... not an Office365-like payment plan ;)

My issue is that the upgrades are too expensive for what you get. I don't care about fancy cross-OS integration, but I do want and expect performance improvements and bug fixes. I shouldn't have to pay such a high fee to get that.

I decided to switch to VirtualBox, but could not find a way to export the drive image successfully. I'm sure many people are deliberately locked into their ecosystem now, for instance if you want to move a Parallels image onto a PC etc, which is a perfectly reasonable scenario.

I don't like the way they do business. At least with VMWare, although equally expensive, the images are portable.

I think what annoys people is that they're not upfront about it. When I bought Parallels 6 I had no idea it was effectively a two year subscription. That pissed me off, I installed Virtual Box and the whole process made me realise I don't need Windows for anything.

Does it bollocks still work. It won't work if you upgrade your OS.

"Don't you think people should get paid for the software they write"

Yes, but not if it's $50 every time Apple update their OS (which is now annually)

I love Parallels, bought it a few times to upgrade, then realised what they was doing. I'm happy to pay for decent software but this is deliberate extortion, piggy-backing on a half-baked excuse with OS X compatibility. Pulling crap like this encourages piracy, and that's exactly how I'll be using Parallels in future.

Skeeter...nice review, but you kept pronouncing as OS X as "Oh Es Ex" rather than "Oh Es Ten". This reduces your credibility as a reviewer.

Apple started calling the version 10.10, so you can start calling it Oh Es Ex now.

$50 is dinner out. The Parallels people have a great product that they support with annual upgrades to take advantage of the latest OS X features. I'm happy to pay for that kind of work and commitment.

Hey Man, Thanks and come to think of it I certainly know better. Honestly I was in such a hurry to get this voiced and then recorded I completely did not think about it hear it when I was recording the video to the voice. Good point, but too late now. Best I could do would be to put a bubble in there clarifying that "Yes I'm an idiot it's call OS Ten" LOL

I think the main difference is the robustness Fusion has. You can actually use Fusion on a newer OS X version, whereas Parallels usually breaks or has significant bugs. It used to be a lot worse though so they improved on this but they still have a long way to go. VMware seems to have an implementation that doesn't rely as heavily on specific kernel things unlike Parallels (Apple changes kernel stuff with nearly each major release). Yosemite will come with a special API for virtualisation. If Parallels is going to take use of that we might see the end of problems with Parallels when upgrading to a new OS X release. It might also be possible that it is not possible for any of the virtualisation software to implement that API due to their investment in their own system (this will be true for VMware since their products share about 90% of the code). We'll have to wait and see.

The other problem is the licensing terms: Parallels is for 1 user on 1 Mac only, Fusion can be used on multiple Macs you own. The license is more like what you'd get if it were sold via the Mac App Store.

Apple sells hardware. The software is a give-away you get with the hardware.

So what? Just stay on Parallels 9 on Mavericks, where is the problem? This is what you've paid for and it's still working fine.

I understand the hardware vs software company paradigm. But the least they could do is let me get two years worth of use. Or, in the alternative not require me to buy a separate license for each of my machines.

I read down further on this forum that Parallels 9 is going to be patched to run on Yosemite. Good. I will then probably upgrade one of my licenses to 10. The one on my Mac in my office that I have to run windows on all day for my firm's apps. And then I'll just patch my home machines, since I rarely need windows for them. In fact, I could just go Bootcamp on my MBA at home, since I only use Windows on it every few months to run one program for a few hours, max.

When I used VMWare their licensing was the same as Parallels. So I had to buy it three times. And their support for Lion was miserable.

VirtualBox! Parallels is annoyanceware on too many fronts. Thank god I have no need of Windows these days. I've always found Parallels quite buggy. The ridiculous annual upgrade pricing is but one of the very compelling reasons to avoid this product. Have you ever tried to contact support for Parallels! OMG,like a bunch of carnies.

Sounds like I should give virtualbox a try. I am happy with fusion, but the annual upgrades are silly...although I haven't paid for one in years.
